- Ex-CIE "A" class loco No. A39 heads for Inch Abbey to collect the buffet set on a sunny summer Saturday. I make no apology for the loud sound, I think it's a fantastic racket!
As you say Mike, a wonderful sound from the old girl, and a delight to hear it...Bob
It would be great to operate a rail tour with A39 I would be delighted to work it again it been the last A class I worked in service. Done that trip to inch light engine in 2010 with A 39 it all comes back you never forget. Great Video.
Hi Ciarán, the DCDR is quite remote - it is part of the Belfast & County Down system that closed in 1950, and it would be next to impossible to link it via Crossgar, Ballynahinch, Comber etc., it must be a good 20-30 miles of winding country railway that is privately-owned and built-over (especially at the Belfast end). Any stock that comes in and out has to do so by road.
I enjoyed the sound and vision, thanks for posting..! The cab is very clean and the brake handles are colourfull, not like how I remember them, when they were always worn down to a silvery colour..! Great memories of the Southern Goods which ran from Sligo to Limerick and finished in Autumn 1975. P.S. the rails are still intact from Collooney to Athenry.
Glad you enjoyed that. Might be a good ringtone for an ITG member's phone! :)
I take it you saw the cab ride video I posted then, Tom? Great memories indeed. She makes a great noise, I just wish it was faster than 25mph and over longer distances.
You should look at the video I have posted "Cork to Cobh 1991 " a cab ride on 012 with a large train for the tall ships to see an A class in action. A class were used that week because of the large numbers going to Cobh.
Another great vid moike how do u do it
Excellent Video Mike.
Is the DCDR attached to any mainline? I think it would be a great and handy idea, perhaps that way you could get a charter train from Dublin or Belfast up to Downpatrick and visit the museum all in one shot...and that would probably bring more people too!
It's a trade secret, I can't possibly tell you how I do it. :)
Fairly sharp curves and bullhead rail in concrete not ideal for speed, I could feel the wheels fighting the rigid curves as we went along. Timber sleepers are better for bullhead rail.
Sorry mike
