  • Steve Davis, history professor, is one of the founding faculty members at Lone Star College-Kingwood, having started in the fall of 1984. He earned undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Houston. He also worked on his doctoral degree in American history from the same institution. Aside from the standard survey courses in U.S. and Texas history, Davis teaches specialized courses in the Beatles and the British Invasion and the History of Rock and Roll. He has won teaching excellence awards both at the University of Houston and at LSC-Kingwood.
Davis is the main author of the instructor's manual to accompany the 8th edition of America: A Narrative History by Tindall and Shi, which is one of the most adopted college history textbooks in the country. His current project is the co-authorship of a documents reader in U.S. history to be published in 2013 by W.W. Norton.
In his limited spare time, Davis is an avid distance runner who has completed eight marathons and who makes appearances a couple of times per year as rhythm guitarist in a local garage band.
In this episode of TalkandRockRadio, Rick Kern and Steve Davis discuss the evolution of the Beatles, the impact and influences they had on the ’60’s music scene and the artists that influenced them.

Being able to learn the history of the Beatles from a great professor is a great opportunity to broaden your education. Everyone can like or love the Beatles but knowing the history brings a new meaning to their music. I enjoyed not only learning about the Beatles but also about Rock history.

This was a great interview with lots of knowledge about Rock n Roll and the Beatles! I enjoyed listening and at the end of the interview I can say that I definitely learned something new, which is always an accomplishment. I really enjoyed the tie in of the Charles Manson story with the Beatles, it definitely peaked my interest to see how a character such as Manson would relate to their music, considering their focus on spreading love and similar topics that strayed far from Manson's beliefs and reputation.

Hello, I really enjoyed the talk about Ringo the Beatles Drummer. He was quite extraordinary and a joy to watch. After your podcast, I went and saw some of his other work and I have to say his technique is really great. Thank you for discussing this because if I hadn't listened, I would not have been exposed to a new genre of music that I enjoy now. I guess its never too late to listen to old Rock!. Act Naturally by the Beatles is now on my permanent playlist!

I found that one of the most interesting parts of this presentation was how the Beatles implemented their psychedelic influences into their music. The cover of their album, “Rubber Soul” reflected their psychedelic era. The look of the album cover appeared somewhat, “druggy,” as Coach Davis reflected. The music of, “Strawberry Fields Forever,” had some psychedelic flare to it. At last, Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds (LSD), was also a strong coincidence to the Beatles’ psychedelic era.
