Just watching this took me back when several years ago I meant this beautiful African brother. I wasn't looking for anyone, but we both took a liking to each other. I was a bit guarded due to previously being hurt & wanted to take my time. As time went on I wanted to know what direction we were going in, but he would never express himself verbally like that & it felt like he really didn't feel the same way & was stringing me along. If I shared how I felt, he wouldn't say anything back. It was weird, he'd sit in silence. One day he had to go out of town, he wasn't away long, so when he got back he asked me if I missed him. I told him I did, & I asked him the same & he didn't respond. He just looked at me & smiled, so I asked again, & he said nothing. That bust my heart because it was weird. I didn't immediately say much because I was hurt. I felt empty inside & didn't want my time being wasted so I cut him off because I didn't want him playing with my feelings. It just felt like he was never really into me like that & didn't feel the same way. Later I found out he was devastated by my decision & was in love with me. He never told me anything so I didn't know how he felt about me. I didn't realize that he wasn't taught to verbally express love like that. His culture doesn't do all that like we do over here. He was the one that got away 😢

I have been married to my husband for 40 years here in America, and he don't tell me often that he loves me. He said that he was never told by his parents that they loved him, but he knew they did by the way they provided for him. If he told me every day I love you it would be routine. Culture ( one's culture is everything )
He is correct because growing up in Grenada back then in the seventies and eighties, our parents or family never said those words. We only know that our mom or dad provide food and shelter. That was their love for their kids. Moving to America in the early eighties, I was shocked to hear my stepfather (who 🎉 American) said to me, “I love you.” I was shocked. West Indians are derived from slaves from Ghana, Nigeria, etc., and that was/is West Indian culture. I tell my kids I love them every time because I had to break that cycle and coming to America as a young adult gave me the opportunity to break that cycle.
The I love you thing speeds up divorce. Africans don’t do it😀😀😀

In the culture I grown up, I never heard my mother, father, or family saying to or each other that they love each other. In my husband culture was the opposite! So when my husband keeps telling me every day that he loves me, I was not use to it! In fact I was uncomfortable! 14 years later I got more comfortable about, hearing it often, and I started saying it back to him, more often which; I was not taught how to say it. It amazes how much things you can learn from somebody, that is from a different culture, from you! 🇯🇲 🇨🇦 In my family we can tell if someone loves you, just by the words they say to you and the way they treat you! In my husband family, they need to be hearing it, in order to feel reassured, maybe because of the reasons you said to, your husband!
