I just want to tell you how much I appreciate your videos/classes. We are very fortunate you are sharing your vast knowledge with all of us this way, specially now with the pandemic. Thank you very much
You're very welcome! It is a pleasure to do these.
You are the most informative a loveable person on youtube. Thank you for your unusually wonderful content.
Wow, thank you!
The true Heart of an Artist and Educator. This is one of those times that sneak up on you and shower you with as much delight as it does surprise. A few months ago I decided to prepare (insulate) myself during the chilly Massachusetts months ahead by returning to my self-taught drawing and watercolor practice. I have binged for hours now on the feast of information and inspiration you provide! I am a jazz musician/singer and, for me, Tone is everything. May I say that the warm inviting inclusive sound of your voice has provided a wonderful feeling of what might be possible if I only apply the same Love I have for the study of Music, to Painting. Your intuitive and patient guidance instantly reminded me of a teacher I studied with in grad school whose guidance significantly changed my artistic life. It also prepared me for a lifetime of teaching as well. All I can say is Thank you for all that you do and for possessing one of those loving creative teachers that embraces everything and everybody. For me, this is the creative equivalent of striking gold! I look forward to spending the months ahead learning and laughing my way to becoming a student of Watercolor and Drawing! Thanks again.
Wow! Thank you for all that.
Super helpful! I can’t believe I’m just now finding your channel. Subscribed!
Awesome! Thank you!
Thank you for this watercolor tip! I appreciate how your videos address foundational skills, usually appropriate for more than just oils, but I'm fascinated by watercolor and am a little ( ok...a lot) intimidated by it too. Playing with the brushes seems like a great way to help with that. Thank you!
You are so welcome!
Yay watercolor! I have been watching your channel for a year when I started my art journey in watercolor - your method of teaching is marveous, and even as a watercolorist, I am learning a lot from you. And this focus on watercolor specifically is greatly appreciated!
Wonderful! I keep hoping to get more questions about watercolor.
You do such a great job explaining and opening our minds...
Thanks. It's a pleasure to do these.
Really enjoyed this (as I have most the videos) but esp so since it’s with watercolors. I’ve only been practicing w/watercolors barely a year & really love using them; hope you continue to add more in this new-to-me medium :)
Great. Since I use all these Quick Tips for answering questions, I'm hoping to get more questions about watercolor.
I've been almost exclusivly watercolor Diane. Never used a Fan but will try with my next work. Thanks!!! Merry Christmas to you and yours!
Have fun with it, Gerald. And Merry Christmas to you, too!
Oh thank you for the watercolor tip, this is mostly what I do. I would love to see more watercolor!
I keep looking for more watercolor questions. So happy to do this one.
Thank you so much dear Dianne. Wonderful tip.
You are so welcome!
Thank you so much Dianne for such a wonderful tutorial. I love watercolor and have been waiting for this for a long time. You have such a wealth of information and your generosity knows no boundaries. Thank you.
My pleasure, Marie. As I've said to other comments, I keep hoping more folks will ask watercolor questions.
Wow WOW!!!
Brilliant!!
Thank YOU MUCH for opening my mind to Possibilities.
My pleasure! Thanks for watching.
More watercolor, please. :) Thank you!
Ask me some specific questions relating to watercolor so I can focus on particular problems you might be having.
@@IntheStudioArtInstruction Would you please discuss or demonstrate how to create an abstract under painting in watercolor? Thank you for all your videos!
Feel like trying water colors after your invaluable technique. Thanks ever so much
My pleasure 😊
Great Tip Dianne!
Thanks!
Excellent tutorial...thank you!!!!
Thanks. It's a pleasure to share these.
Great tips! Thankyou
You're so welcome!
Great vídeo and tips! Thanks for sharing!!!
Thanks for watching!
I didn't know I could do this all with a fan brush. I use mainly oils and I find the fan brush difficult, unless I thin the paint considerably. What wonders me is the neatness and fluiïdity of your watercolor paint. Mine is always rock solid, so it takes times to get a nice amount of it. What is the secret?
As always, my sincere thanks for your great tips.
The secret is to wet the color and get it activated before beginning to use it.
Thank you.
I use acrylics too and have found this very helpful.
Wonderful!
It is exciting to explore brushes using water color with you!
Would you teach us a bit about your specific water color palette? Which colors / brands for each hue are always included? I figure it is similar to your oil painting palette. I appreciated learning about the specifics of your oil palette .
Also I’m curious to know what your process of blocking in , notan etc. includes and the sequence of your process for water color painting.
I’d also love to learn more about using gauche.
Thanks Diane. It is such a gift to watch your lessons. Each lesson is a jewel.
Thanks, Laura. We have a number of watercolor Tips planned for 2021. I'm delighted to get some specific request about the process. I will put yours on our schedule.
Thank you for posting. I was wondering what the fan brush could do in watercolours.
You bet!
😊 thank you 💙
You’re welcome 😊
Sensacional obrigada.
Obrigado por assistir!
Awesome! I am new to watercolour and have just started exploring what it can do, so thank you for this tip it helps me a lot! 😃
Could you do a quick tip on tonal values with watercolour. Or one on light to dark layering with water colour please. Love ❤️ your quick tips.
My pleasure 😊 Because we film these several weeks in advance, look for this in early February.
Thank you so much! I will be watching my notifications. Merry Christmas to you and a very happy New Year , let’s hope 2021 is better than 2020
Thank you !
You bet!
Wonderful!! Ty I would also love to know what kind of watercolor palette that is I really like it. I am brand new to watercolor and of course we're all very lost in the beginning. Thanks again
Josey, the watercolor palette I use is a porcelain palette designed and marketed by Tom Lynch. The palette I used for decades prior to this one (which was a gift) was the John Pike palette.
Thank you soo much. I’m a new sub, found you by pure luck. I’m a new fan (pun intended! )
Welcome aboard!
I use only flats and round brushes in watercolour...never explored others...very interesting to explore the possibilities
Try it!
Hi, I love your videos and how do you explain painting🤗
I wanted to chuederti I never quite understood the difference between the chiaroschuro method and the notan method and how to put them into practice especially the notan method (qyando you have 3 or more values), can I ask you for help? In an upcoming video
Although both refer to the light and dark pattern, chiaroscuro and notan are totally different concepts. Chiaroscuro refers to techniques used to get an extra strong light/dark contrast in the entire painting whereas notan is the light/dark pattern used to create the painting. Even though a Chiaroscuro can be achieved by setting the notan in the beginning, the notan can also be set for all approaches to painting.
I will do a Quick Tip for this one, but we film these several weeks in advance, so it will be at least February before it appears.
@@IntheStudioArtInstruction Thank you for answering me❤️ wait for February willingly. And thank you very much also for giving me some clarifications in advance.
I wanted to ask you if you studied Bill Mosby's "alla prima" book ?
It would be interesting to see which art books helped you the most to learn the basics. (I am an avid reader for this I say😅☺️) I do not want to disturb with all these requests🤗
Thank you. As always, you're wonderful. Couple of questions. What kind of watercolor do you use? Yours looked really moist like M. Graham, but it cold be you just put it fresh out of the tube or saturated what was there with water to soften it up.
2nd I'd heard Stephen Scott Young doesn't use many watercolor brushes with his watercolor because it gives a dryer look and more control. I can't find anything on that. He's one of my favorite artists and in particular, Looking For Grouper, which I would kill to own. I struggle with getting his textures and color layers on the kids. Any suggestions? www.stephenscottyoung.com/available-prints/looking-for-grouper-thoughtful
I use Daniel Smith watercolor for most colors, but Winsor Newton for others. I keep my paint wells filled. About fifteen minutes before beginning to work, I spray water into all the wells to soften the colors. That has worked well for me for decades.
I respect Stephen Scott Young's opinion about not using many brushes, but I don't agree with it. My take is to use the best brush for what needs to be done. If at the end of a session I have used one or a dozen, it's not the brushes but what I do with them and the water and color that determines the end product.
As to his technique for textures, it appears it achieves those with dry brush and perhaps stipple. There are so many methods for achieving textures with watercolor that many of them can produce the same results.
@@IntheStudioArtInstruction Thank you, thank you, thank you. 🤗
Please make more watercolor videos. Thank you
Do you have something specific you'd like me to address?
Mrs. Mize What do you say about using white in WC? Some artists say it's a mortal sin some are using it to some extent. I use it sometimes because I hate masking tapes and liquids. What is your attitude?
Yeah, I know plenty about the watercolor purists. Here's my take: white in watercolor changes the character of the color as well as raises the value. If I want an opaque, lighter passage, I see no reason not to use white in the color. However, one of the beauties of watercolor as a medium is to control the wetness of the color so that the paper becomes the white, i.e., allowing the paper to participate in controlling the value of the color. And, there are methods we can use to paint around areas of light without using masking.
On the other hand, if I want to express fog with watercolor, adding white to the mix creates a more lovely fog than just allowing the whiteness of the paper to show through.
I think I will create a Quick Tip on this. Watch for it in February.
@@IntheStudioArtInstruction - looking fwd to more watercolor tips, thanks, Dianne! :)
Just read a few days ago how Sargent used white pretty freely in his work. There’s such equal beauty I think in his method vs leaving the white of the paper (or absorbent ground?) to be the highlight, so hoping eventually I can learn how to use both methods as needed/wanted. F
Dianne...thank you....please do more in watercolour please. Want to know why people like me ...like watercolour more than oil painting? Although I'm better in oils.
I would love to do more watercolor Quick Tips, but I need specific questions to respond to. I bet you have questions you might ask. If so, I'd love to respond.
@@IntheStudioArtInstruction I would mainly want to understand edge control, negative painting, painting reflections
You give the impression that you don't like watercolor. If that's the case stick to oil or acrylics. I got frustrated watching this. You seem to be an oil painter so i'm unsubscribing.
If that impression came across, it was totally wrong. I love watercolor and have been painting with watercolor since the early 1960's. I love painting with oils, too. Many artists are fluent in more than one medium. Sargent, for example.
I wonder how did you get that idea? Watching the whole video, and there are no negative words towards the watercolor
Okay, Karen.
