    I drove from brand new in 1978, a CL 9000 with a Detroit 8v92 factory rated at 430 horsepower. The upper cab was mounted at 4 corners on an air ride suspension. I literally floated going down the road watching the 13 speed gear lever making circles in the floor. The boss had it rated up to rev over 2500 RPM. He wanted the biggest fastest most powerful trucks to haul pizza supplies from New Jersey to the midwest. I would pull pizza flour loads out of Buffalo grossing over 100,000 pounds back to Jersey. NY and PA and NJ pretty much had no DOT in those days. It was a 100 mile an hour truck and I had a hard time keeping my foot out of it. The cab was so high it used to be referred to as a "two story Ford." Nothing could beat the sound of a Detroit V8 in those days. Had several trailers crack in half from all the overloading. We ran 42 foot reefers then.
    Thanks for the memories.

      John Meadows 🇺🇸 I’m with you on that! They make cabovers over in England/UK. I’ve seen a few of their cabovers, and as cool as I think they are, I still prefer our American made cabovers! I’m not a Volvo fan, but they don’t offer cabovers here in the USA, so I’m not sure what they’re like to drive. If they made them again I bet they could make them even better and more economical than ever! The old Mack cabovers were totally awesome! 🥰 Now I love the big conventionals, but still, there’s something about a cabover that really gets my juices pumpin! My dad started trucking back in the 1930s and all the boys have gotten into it! I own my dad’s 51 REO and a 95 IH 9670. Check out our cabover video. Glad you enjoyed the Ford.

      See here's the thing...I drove a few cab overs and at 6'2" 400lbs there wasn't much room for me lol...but the visibility and sheer power in most of these old workhorses simply magical them old school supercharged diesels just had a magic to em that turbos dont have...I'm with you I would love to have the options back in American trucks these Peterbilt rip off [long nose] trucks all look too similar and none are really too different from one another...[mind you I'm no trucker so bear that in mind (I do have my cdl tho)].

    Great capture, thanks for the overview, good bit of nostalgia preserved well for the age of it. The first cabover I ever got to ride in (in 1981) was my brother in-law's brother, 79 CL9000 w/8v92 430hp (not aftercooled) 13 speed. Trimac Transport.

    I used to be a Heavy Truck mechanic in a GMC dealership, and sometimes I would get a Ford to work on. The Fords were so much easier to work on, they were designed to be easy to maintain. Later Ford sold their heavy truck division to Daimler-Benz who changed the name to Sterling. Sadly after a few years Sterling was discontinued.

    Don't see many cabovers in use here in the USA anymore like I use to back in the day when the length limit was shorter.

    • @the.porter.productions
      @the.porter.productions  3 роки тому

      🇺🇸 Yeah, when they changed the length laws it affected lots of other things. Some drivers didn’t like the cabovers as much, and that’s ok. But you can take a cabover in places where you can’t get a conventional in...with a trailer that is. You see them more at truck shows now. I know some people who still use the cabovers for working, but they are rare. I’ve been known to do a U turn and chase one down to get some pictures and talk to the driver. Cabovers are my favorite! 🥰

    • @kevinrichards3288
      @kevinrichards3288 3 роки тому

      @@the.porter.productions I'm a big fan of cabovers too & I remember back in the 1980s & down they were common here in the USA which of course that was back when the length limit was shorter. Some people who use to drive them back in the day told me those things ride like you have a jackhammer up your ass & is very noisy inside the cab. Also I bet quite a bit of cabover drivers forget to make sure they don't leave anything lose in the cab when they take their semi in the shop to get worked on because the mechanic would need to tilt up the cab for access to the motor & when he does that, the trucker's stuff inside would get tossed around & lands on the windshield & breaks it.

My uncles barn door would stroll east to west at 125mph loaded and he'd still have pedal left!! He was an O/O and ran produce from N.Y. out west and citrus on the return trip. 🇺🇸Matthew , Thanks for the info. My brother is very good about taking care of of his stuff. He’s taught me a lot about trucking. 675 HP would be awesome for that truck! A truck does need to have the horses to pull the big hills...maybe not at 125 mph, but enough to show them what you got under that cab, if and when needed! I’m hoping to get this truck to the Howard Truck Show in Fairborn, Ohio in May. Who knows how it will turn out for us. Be safe and stay healthy, friend!

    • @the.porter.productions
      @the.porter.productions  3 роки тому

      🇺🇸Neil, As far as we know, the engine and trans are the original components to that truck. The only mods to the truck are the air bags for the cab and the wet kit for pulling dump trailers. The FORD dealer replaced the bags. The engine has the turbo and supercharger both, but I’m not sure what HP that gives the truck. I’m keeping track of anything else that we find out about the truck and will post them in a later episode. Here’s one for ya: the way they plumbed the airlines is what caused the truck to come off the road at one point. I just wait to get it ready so that we can take it on a little test run. Stay safe, healthy and have a Happy New Year!

      @@the.porter.productions Thks, the Silver 92 was not released until 1982, but DDA had a deal going. The original 92 had many problems and after the Silver was released they would give you a smoking deal on a Silver if you had a warranty claim on a pre 1982 92 engine. The Super 10 Transmission was a late 80's introduction to improve on the regular 10 speed, over all it was not popular because of the way you had to shift it. I liked the truck, drove a 1977 (first year) many miles and it was a huge improvement over the WT 9000.

      @@nfarnell1 🇺🇸 Guess what...my brother ran into the previous owner, one of the sons who drove it, and we found out this info. This truck was a repo unit and that the original engine was blown. In order for the sale to be final, the engine had to be rebuilt/replaced. Detroit reps came in and installed a new Silver 92 engine and one rep stayed with the truck until it was ready. This info was a blessing to receive directly from the owner-operator. It was rated I think at 445 HP I believe. Some odd number! The truck is still coming along. Just thought you would like to know.

      Because they scavenge for air as a 2 stroke the supercharger a.k.a blower is required to make the engine run by forcing air through the base of the cylinders. Watch the video on how the 2 stroke diesel engine works
