諸葛亮 Zhuge Liang, the Confucian Hero and the Cultural Significance of Three

- During the Three Kingdom Period (220-280 CE), a scholar from a farming background named Zhuge Liang 諸葛亮, along with three other generals, founded one of the kingdom, Shu 蜀國. He was made into a cultural hero by a popular novel The Romance of the Three Kingdoms. A well-known phrase, 三顧茅廬 or Paying three visit to the Zhuge cottage, was coined from their historical meeting around 206-7 CE.

That is right. 他的《出师表》是很多人喜欢的经典。很多成语来自他的事迹和文章。I have a mixed feeling about him. He was an excellent strategist and premier in his personal capacity. However, he was not very good in recognising and promoting talented young ones. This was probably the reason that he failed to consolidate the kingdom he co-founded with Liu Bei.
I also think he is quite special among the Chinese scholars because of the romanticisations by the novel of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms. He represents the ideal of what a Confucian scholar is able to achieve if he choose the right lord to support and assist; the power he wielded and the honour he got from not only the king he assisted by also the king he raised and put in the throne!!
Ah... Three Kingdoms and subsequent arrival of the Jin. Anticlimactic episode of history, it was full of interesting people at the beginning, not so much later... or maybe I just read too much into their characterization in the novel ha ha...

I believe as you stated that the text 三顧茅廬 refers to 3 visits and as you noted was quite customary. These men following the tradition and being men of honor would walk such a path.
