    This biggest thing I get out of Goggins is the fact that he learned how to operate very well in situations that people hate being around. His greatest strength is his mind, not his physical abilities. His body is just trying to keep up with his brain.

      @C_The_Guy 4 роки тому +300

      Ahmed R “a weird life before he transformed”? thats a massive, understatement. and its much less weird, than it was just, really really fucked up. i would recommend you go check out his backstory and see what led to him becoming what you see now.
      and its not about “oh i had this rough life so i became an asshole” its about your decision making. the obstacles he faced were not unique, and his decisions were not the smartest, but his decisions to keep pushing is whats rare in todays society. his story is about overcoming what most people let stop them, with sheer will power.
      like he says, your obstacle doesnt have to be run 205 miles in a day. maybe its a different challenge. whatever your hurdle is, it can be overcame. thats the takeaway.

    I think a guy like Goggins is so introverted and different from other guys is because his childhood home was a hell hole. He came from a background of extreme physical and mental abuse and speaking from experience that can make it extremely difficult to relate to people who didn’t go through such things. That kind of experience gives you such a different outlook on the world and people that it can make you feel like a total outcast and it really does put you at odds with others.

      David Bury Yes and no. Yes they seek greater independence within an individual but they want operators who are sound of character and are not emotionally unstable. In many ways, being part of a team is a form of revealing an individuals psyche. SASR and NZSAS has their courses revolving both on the individual and team. A former Delta member himself George Hand said that a particular candidate who was a stud on selection was booted off for not interacting with his fellow peers no SAS patrol or Delta member would be allow to continue if they are found to be closed off. Many Delta members and SASR members say if a member is not interacting then how much more can he be relied on during long period of time cutoff? Key ethos in the NZSAS and SASR “Humor and Humility”

    Goggins did kinda change my life. He's right. The body does adjust. I was once working like 12 hours a day on a farm carrying heavy shit all day. After about a week of that I was getting worried that I wasn't getting a break to recover. I kept that shit up for like 2.5- 3 weeks without a day off. All of a sudden all my pain just kinda disappeared, even in my joints, and I felt stronger than i ever have. I didn't think the body could do that without a break to recover

    • @goose300183
      @goose300183 Рік тому +7

      yeah it does seem to work that way! I had longstanding lower back pain for a couple of years (got physically lazy, got a sit-down job). The way most people deal with that is to maybe do physio, be careful not to strain themselves, or just take painkillers. The way I cured mine - deadlifts. I deadlift as heavy as I can twice a week. I also do the other powerlifts. It not only stopped the pain, it fixed all of my posture issues! Getting stronger is the cure for pain, not painkillers - all they do is mask the symptoms and don't fix anything. The first few weeks were torture, and caused more pain, but that suddenly went away within a month, zero back pain after that. My lower back was too curved, too soft, too weak before. Now it's rock hard, and is configured exactly how it is supposed to be.

    I wasnt in the SEALS, but was in the Marines. In the Marines Goggins would be called a "Mo-Tard." In other words, so motivated that he was retarded. This can rub guys the wrong way because someone is trying to one up you constantly. Mo-Tards are also very intense, speak their mind and sometimes can have a "holier-than-thou" self-righteous attitude.
    Leadership loves it, and I don't blame them, but socially they tend to struggle with relationships and realize how they're being perceived (or simply don't care).
    Apparently because of his medical issues he was basically made a recruiter for years and never really told his teammates. As a result, they all thought he was chicken shit and never wanted to deploy...but he has deployed though. Supposedly the rumor is that he turned down various assignments due to his medical issues, so the Navy used him as a recruiting tool. Nevertheless, I have a TON of respect for him.
    Edit: There are two types of Mo Tards: those who are good teammates, have tact and genuinely care about their teammates. These guys are still demanding and hard as fuck.
    The other kind of Mo Tard can isolate themselves and struggle building relationships. Goggins even acknowledged in his book that treating his fellow SEALS like BUD/S recruits wasn't a good idea.
    Note: Both types of Mo Tards can be very successful and they can evolve from one type to the other over time.

      DonVito591 Then I was a mo-tard in the eyes of Marines like you. There exists other Marines that just considered it being motivated and considered it the norm. In my experience, it was usually the shit bags, less than average, and average Marines that had a problem with the Marines that were smarter, tougher, faster, and stronger. I remember the high speed, low drag Marines getting hated on for striving to be better versions of themselves. Weak asses. Never hate on a man for striving to be better. It also says a lot about the ones “hating”.

    • @DonVito591
      @DonVito591 5 років тому +16

      @@derek9153 Depends. I'd have to meet you in person first before making a sound judgment.
      I hope you didn't take my post to be insulting towards Mo Tards, because they are the ones every unit needs. My point was that sometimes Mo Tards struggle with interpersonal skills because they are so intense. You can still be incredibly motivated, but still be a good team member by building camaraderie and having tact.
      Goggins had a rough childhood (to put it lightly) and that affected him later on.
      Honestly, as an Officer, I bet some Marines probably perceived me as a Mo Tard, but I just considered myself to be motivated and constantly pushing myself. I have a close friend who's a Mo Tard and pushed me to new limits, but he also clashed with a lot of Marines when he simply didn't have to.
      It's a thin line between being a Mo Tard and being motivated and also between helping the unit or degrading good order and discipline.
      In Goggins case, he isolated himself and rubbed others the wrong way. Being a good teammate is a critical skill too -- if you don't have it, then a Marine will just be a highly motivated individual. I agree with you about guys being critics though. They are usually either jealous, lazy or both.

Then he was received a perfect score on leadership from his peers in army ranger training. To say he wasn’t a leader or a team guy is flat out bs. Other seals were butt hurt and jealous because Goggins was never satisfied and it’s important to note that not all seals disliked him. Also, in the book, he didn’t have any trouble getting along with his first platoon in the SEALS, because he was with a platoon who constantly was getting after it and were some hard mfs. I remember A Jocko clip where he talks about how buds/training is the highlight of some peoples careers in the SEAL teams whereas others just want go on deployments and see combat. I’m guessing that’s where the tension came from. I’m guessing goggins was the former and pissed people off by bragging about running 100 miles a day or whatever, when in reality they didn’t give a shit and just cared about big operations on deployments etc.

      If i recall correctly the full clip was about how people who only focus on the BUDs/Training are people who only went down hill from there and never actually got to be true seals. As in they were probably regularly benched because of an issue or another. It was in response to a viewer question.

    I have similar experiences, but in a totally different world. I worked as a drayman, which is a guy who is the "second man" on a lorry delivering beer, wine, spirits etc. to licensed establishments like pubs, nightclubs, sports clubs etc. That was a hard, hard physical job. The driver always stays with the vehicle, my job was to carry in the booze on a sack barrow, sometimes even just by hand. Lots of guys complained like hell about some of the places where you had to carry/drag VERY heavy beer kegs and boxes of bottles up multiple flights of stairs, or down ancient winding stairs to old basements. Some drop routes were harder than others, so guys used to argue over who got assigned to the drivers doing the easy routes that day. I always volunteered for the hardest of the hard routes. The other dudes thought I was nuts. But at the end of it all, I was the fittest, strongest, most buff and efficient worker in the whole company. I took a real pounding, but just kept telling myself I'm getting strong and embraced it. I really embraced it and welcomed it. Savage mode all day. Sweating all day. Drivers would ask for me to be assigned to them, not the other way around as with everyone else. I always got it done with a positive, happy attitude while I was hurting and at 150+BPM for most of the day.
    The upside - any overtime opportunites, or easy one-off gigs doing one drop to far-away places - the manager would give that to me as a reward for all the brutal work I did and never once complaining. The other guys who whined about being assigned certain routes - they rubbed the bosses the wrong way. They did not earn any favour by complaining about the job all the time. I was the only one the bosses respected basically. However - that created a distance between me and the rest of the guys with my rank/job. I didn't get many invites to social stuff outside work - and that was just fine with me. I was only there to do a job, not to socialise. I did that job in beast mode and reaped the rewards that nobody else was getting. I don't regret a second of the hard graft that I did, it made me physically and mentally stronger than everyone else. I was able to save enough money to pay my way back into university, while others complained about the job and drank their wages every week.

When I got into the truck to drive to the range, one of the seals made a racist comment about me and their officer in charge going for chicken afterwards. I guess he felt some type of way that two black guys were together in his team. What I noticed throughout my military career is that many places will deal with the one black token guy, but when it's more or the one starts to speak up for himself they treat him like shit. Plus I totally feel him on being a loner. Alot of marines didn't like me because I stayed to myself and rarely hung out with them.

    His ability to control his mind is without doubt awe inspiring. His mental fortitude is like steal, but his strength is also his weakness which is why he failed twice to get into Delta Force. His confidence turned to arrogance which in turn became complacency. When this happens you're a liability. Hence why the SAS/SBS selection course is actually the toughest in the world, which is also why D.F has based their selection / training on it. SEAL training is admirable but it is shorter than our own commando training (6mths vs 9ths) and certainly not near the paras. You can be a fit as an Olympic athlete and built like a line-backer, but if your head is not completely in the game, always, you will fail. That aside, his backstory is incredible and the charity work to help families of fallen brothers is commendable.

Mostly everyone is clamoring to escape training and here DG took the worst part of training and said "I'll make this my daily routine". If you do that in life, nothing can phase you. I find myself adapting to an easy life style. I think it's natural for the human body to do so. You chase easy. But if your mind can stop your body from doing that and have it do the hard part daily, you have to succeed at anything you do. There's no failing.

      He's also slightly crazy and that was a really dumb thing to do. I like him but that's some crazy shit, doing a massive 10 mile ruck run the SAME DAY he had heart surgery scheduled!

    I ran a lot, and it suddenly started hurting a lot, but I kept going. The pain was my meniscus tearing. It’ll probably put me back 2,000$ and a whole year of fitness.
    Once I rode 80 miles on my bike without stopping, when I did stop I lost consciousness. That could have been dangerous.
    I don’t regret the second one because everything ended up fine. But the first one I regret like hell. If you suddenly feel a new pain, you should stop and try it the next day.

      As an update that meniscus tear as put me back more like 6,000, and more like 3 years of fitness.
      Hopefully just had the last surgery I’ll need.

    What I noticed about goggins is the calmness in his eyes, completely at ease. He has been through it all and came out the other side. Enlightened seems like a fitting word.

    Was not surprised to hear how he didn't fit in with the SEALS. Too hard. I was in SOCM with some. These were trident wearing SEAL pups on there way to SEAL teams other than 6 mind you still in their training pipeline. While I was an 18D SFQC trainee trying to earn my tab. We had a 100 pushup contest for time one day. It was comical some of these guys pushups they would go down about an inch or two not even close to breaking plane. It was a proud loss to them haha. To this day I still wonder if that is a legit, standard Navy pushup. For all the gunpowders out there I realize this was one mans encounter with SEALS I'm sure they are not all like that. This was not an exaggeration, though. Goggins is correct not all of SF is all that hard all the time. In that, yes they've made it through a very difficult assessment course but yes afterwards some get softer. Like he said many just want to graduate and forget the suck rather than embrace it and seek it constantly.
