    Why is auto pass not included ?

    Cost to value doesn't make sense, at least for me.

    Why is it a cost? It is a new feature… Yes standard CNCs have this ability and have since the beginning, but as a Shaper owner I am happy to pay for new advancements on the platform that are available to both the new generation and the original generation. I can tell you from personal experience my biggest complaint in using my Origin is having to stop mid work to adjust something and never getting into the flow and enjoyment of the work. Auto pass frees cognitively load making work easier and more enjoyable… Not to mention it is INSANELY productive. When I first downloaded Jenner I forgot Autopass was a paid option and was frustrated as hell with a series of cuts and the machine not automatically dropping depths.
    I went online to find out why it wasn’t working and then was prompted to purchase. I didn’t think twice. Purchased…. New software, new feature and insanely new productivity unlocked. Honestly that should offer a trial to existing users and no one would think twice about stepping back to not having it. Of course everyone would then complain about the trial being taken away because they would see how amazing the feature is. Would it be great if it was free… Yes… but R&D, engineering and platforms require revenue to stay solvent. My Origin has unlocked so much for me and my small side business… If I’m angry with Shaper and Origin for anything is getting me a real taste of computerize woodworking… That taste pushed me to add a full CNC to my shop to have both one-off, prototype capabilities with the Origin AND now production capabilities with a full CNC. 😮

    Charging a premium early adopter price for the machine and then charging for these software updates is a sure way to make people jump ship when competition arrives.

      They probably already has a patent on this tech that is why no one is making an alternative.

      I was about to order a shaper origin but then I heard they charge 275CAD for this basic feature. any cam software have these features by default and I can only imagine what basic feature they could think of charging hundreds of dollars for in the future. So moral of the story i will look elsewhere.

    Now I see why it is an upgrade one time charge. A considerable investment in engineering to develop and deliver this feature. The time saving trade off is not huge based on the ratio calculated based on 2 expert users in this demo I suspect that the time saving is much greater for non experts and hobbyist. BUT, BUT: The time saving is not as important as the reduction of errors that could occur when doing multiple and repetitive work. I think this is VERY important because one error in the wrong spot could destroy and entire component and necessitate redoing the entire piece and maybe having to buy more lumber etc.
    FULL DISCLOSURE: I have both the G1 & G2 and purchased the extension. But I am also serious hobbyist and enjoy woodworking and all of its benefits but since it is not a paid endeavor I do want to maximize the time I work at it and minimize mistakes. I do have an engineering/CAD background before retiring and so tools like studio provide the basis for a project planning to implementation process amplifies my abilities and minimizes my weaknesses.

    This really should just be a feature of the origin and not a paid upgrade. When I bought the origin a few years back, I assumed it had a feature like autopass and was disappointed to see how basic the software was. I figured this would be a future upgrade, so it’s sad to see them trying to force monetization. This feels like festools pushing for revenue targets.

    There’s a *lot* of value added if we can write our own scripts for specialized cuts. I want to plunge an engraving bit to get a perfectly located indent for a hole I’m drilling later. I’d love to follow a path and pocket out some specific area every [6 inches] to use as reference depth guides for carving. Even with a CT26 on dust collection, I frequently move the tool and give many materials a second clean up by hand just to minimize the chance of friction. This alone limits the value of Autopass specifically for me, as that last step of pressing “+ 1/8 Enter” is trivial at that point.
    I 100% appreciate the fact that this doesn’t do much for me because of how well the interface is designed. That’s an easy thing to take for granted, especially if you’ve never operated a traditional CNC. We’ve been treated to lots of things like this for free and I’m enthusiastic to continue supporting this development. $200 isn’t a bad day for a software licence or a prefab jig in our world but if the roadmap is smaller, limited, front end focused units, the prospect of owning 4-5 is troubling enough that I’d rather wait a year to see how this shakes out. Maybe around Black Friday.

    Feature is nice (and obviously should have been included from the start), but this feels like such a money grab. How long was this planned? Was it held back from the original release so it could generate more profit?

    This is a great feature for sure but I am sorry to say this is not a production machine. Cutting smaller hobby projects and not having autopass is not a deal breaker. Also if you are cutting large profiles from full-size plywood, time to adjust pass depth has an even lower overall effect.

    Hmm, that test shows If i make 100 tenons I save 1 hour with autopass . So If i make 800 tenons i came to the Profitability.
    Yes it's a nice Feature but the price is to high .
    Can it be used also for pockets? I think not, or?

    Trying to highlight a feature which every cheap CAM software has since years. About 240 Euro for such a basic feature .... unbelievable for home consumer. Wanted to buy gen2 Origin but I am totally shocked about this price tag for a basic feature. What's next to come?

    Oh my word. All the bellyaching is ridiculous. Half of you are saying there is no need for this because this isn’t a production machine. Others are upset it’s too pricy. If it’s not important and it’s too pricy don’t buy it, keep quiet, and move about your life. If after buying a $2500+ tool you clutch your pearls at $200, someone needs to point out the silliness in that.

    • @benmooreman
      @benmooreman Рік тому +3

      It's now a $2899, nearly the price of both a workstation + Origin + bundle items like bits, etc. a year ago. Now add $200 on top of a barely refreshed $400 increase, people rightfully should ask if this is really worth it and how much of future updates will be paid for updates on any already hefty ecosystem. If you were to buy a gantry CNC, they don't usually nickel and dime you.
      Frankly, if AutoPass doesn't sell well (low uptake volume of existing user base), they should consider whether it's worth trying to charge for these updates. Obviously, they are a business and want to maximize profit but right now there is still a lot of growth potential that they may be able to grab by not increasing too much too fast. Goliath isn't the best but if it improves, it could give Origin some trouble since it's self-guided. That's the biggest friction point of this ecosystem: you can't just set it and walk away, so the more they reduce that friction, the better it stacks up against competitors.
      You can disagree with their "bellyaching" but consumers are allowed to feel the way they do and voice it. But the number 1 indicator on whether Origin will continue down this new path of also charging for software features is whether people buy in. I would hope the community resists enough that it signals to the product team to be very careful about charging for what should be frankly basic feature upgrades.

      You can ask If it’s worth it, but that’s an internal decision not one that anyone but you cares about. Therefore, there is no need to rant in the comments about your personal decision. This company is owned by Festool; if you are new to that world the company doesn’t care if you think something is too expensive, they don’t adjust their price down they just keep increasing them . . . and it doesn’t seem to negatively impact their business model. If in fact this model of charging a lot for an add-on results in poor sales, that moves the needle as a business. However, a bunch of complainers in a UA-cam comment section doesn’t. You can scream at the sky all you want and no one listens. If you want to be heard scream with your wallet and don’t buy it. That’s how businesses listen. For me I can afford it and I will likely buy it.

    • @benmooreman
      @benmooreman Рік тому +6

      @@fingersmicke8856 you literally didn’t read my comment. Rant all you’d like but at least acknowledge the community has been pretty consistently frustrated with this move. I acknowledged that the business impact is where the rubber meets the road and my hope is the business gets the sales figures and realizes this wasn’t a revenue positive move. They aren’t going to enhance the feature if the uptake is low. And may not decide to do more releases like this. We all know this is Festool. But price increases still have real world limits.
      But yes, you can buy it. A fool and his money are easily parted.

      By your logic Apple should be charging for every functionality update to their existing phones. You're a companies dream customer congratulations.

    • @thomasstapel6824
      @thomasstapel6824 Рік тому +1

      I agree with you it is really amazing to me how many people have complained about this and the logic used to continue to defend their position. I don't think its reasonable to compare apple products to shaper origin. For one Apple sells exponentially more iPhone for instance so even big changes can be amortized across a huge sales volume. Stop complaining-its business and you would do the same thing if it was your business. Everyone wants to be compensated for their efforts and intellectually efforts. And if a CNC is so great for you than buy one - its your choice in the market place.
