Easily avoidedable if car is warmed up and oil is brought to temperature before you start thrashing it. Vast majority of the people who buy these cars have no mechanical sympathy whatsoever. I persoanlly know someone who's got an E93 M3 (similar design engine) from new and has achieved 420.000km. If you buy a used car, for peace of mind just replace the rod bearings for a cost of 1000-1500 euros.

I have a love hate relationship with this engine. I absolutely adore the sound and how responsive it is, but I tremendously hate how unreliable it is.
Yes sound and responsivness. But it's worst M engine in history of Bmw. And paired with that garbage smg transmission. As Scotty Kilmer would say : Money pit.
The common mistake when people drive the e60 m5 is that they don’t allow it to warm up. Gotta atleast let it warm up for 5 mins when started and then keep the rpms below 2 for atleast another 10 mins
