    A Doll's House audiobook
    by Henrik Ibsen
    A Doll's House, written two years after The Pillars of Society, was the first of Ibsen's plays to create a sensation and is now perhaps his most famous play, and required reading in many secondary schools and universities. The play was highly controversial when first published, as it is sharply critical of 19th Century marriage norms. It follows the formula of well-made play up until the final act, when it breaks convention by ending with a discussion, not an unravelling. It is often called the first true feminist play, although Ibsen denied this. From Wikipedia

    A distinct thread of deceit runs through the character of Nora. At first glance it seems sincere in saving the health of her husband but she lies without abandonment while her husband calls her a song bird or squirrel. There must be a wide age difference to them and it keeps her so childlike. Wonderful bit of storytelling and it’s great to have it well read and in keeping with the customs and dialogue of that era.

      Yeah fr idk why they're so obsessed with old ass books with mediocre story lines. @@will-jh7yi Yeah I get that, I just think that we should read current books when we are using them to talk about current issues. Like I think that something like shakespeare is well worth reading because his work is so incredibly influential (and it's just fun). I even think it's worth it to read the odyssey for this reason, even though I personally found it unengaging. But my teacher used this play to talk about women's role in society *today*, or they'll use To Kill a Mockingbird as the book we use to talk about racism (obviously that one's not by a man but it's got the same issue just with race). I feel like there's so much good modern literature but we just keep reading these crusty books that are less engaging AND less relevant then what we could be reading.
      Sorry for the rant lol just wanted to make sure I was explaining myself properly

    Nora is such a coward to leave her kids and husband. But this is true that torvald should have thought about nora's well being before his own when he found out she forged her father's signature. But no, torvald was only worried about his reputation and how he would be ridiculed. But nora has no right to give him a speech when all she told were lies. Thought they were for good cause, she should have trusted her husband to understand and accept what she did. Her lack in doing this also makes her a coward

    I just finished this book for my AP book report and essay. I can say, I thought it was really boring at first, but near the end or most of Act 3 really made it worthwhile. Both Nora and Torvald were in the wrong in my opinion. She went such lengths to commit fraud and then kept lying. Then Torvald treats her weirdly and cared about his reputation. Although, I’m kinda on Torvald’s side more because Nora actions really annoyed me. I really don’t like her character but I can understand some bits like her not wanting to be treated as a doll or being unhappy with her relationship. Either way, she kinda put herself in that situation. It was a sad ending, I felt somewhat bad for Torvald because he seemed like he would really change for her. Oh, and Dr. Rank was a cool character, I thought he liked Christine at first but nope it was Nora lmao. I also don’t know how to feel about Christine

    What a wonderful play! Most women understand this just like that but a certain intelligence for many men and some women to digest this. Women treated and thought as helpless beautiful creatures not good enough to know the world and self is still very much a norm.

    I am unable to give this play my full approval. I really like the beginning because it’s so realistic to this day! I can completely relate to the petit-bourgeoise vibe of the Helmer household. I can also empathize with issues like struggling to pay the bills.
    However, the plot is so unrealistic it’s hard to take it seriously. Yes, Thorvald’s a pompous jerk, but you know what? Nora’s a dingbat! Committing fraud is no way to solve a problem. Forging signatures on loan docs is bad news, especially if your hubby manages a bank. Never mind colluding with a snake like Krogstad.
    I understand Ibsen’s point, I just don’t think this plot does it justice.

      The fact that a woman is not allowed to merely take out a loan all on her own and has to resort to fraud just to protect her husbands fragile ego does even more Justice to the message

    • @MD-md4th
      @MD-md4th 11 місяців тому

      @@starstriker8268 You have to have steady income to get a loan. There’s no justice in committing fraud and then crying “victim”.
