Troy, I've been a diehard baseball fan for 10 years and I still don't know exactly what a balk is. You're not alone
So when I played baseball, I was a pitcher. A balk is when a pitcher doesn't come set before throwing a pitch to the plate or if they start there motion to the plate but then trun to the base runner to get him out
That's the best way to explain what it is
I just staring watching these Troydan baseball videos, and I gotta say, they’re really fun to watch
In the first clip with the disappearing catcher, the catcher went to back up the first baseman. It's actually a pretty standard play. When an infielder comes charging in like that, often their throw will tail pretty heavily to the arm side. The shortstop was the boneheaded one here.
I mean if he stays at the plate they have an easy out and save a run. But I understand what your saying.

@@eastonbradshaw5441 That would've needed to be one of the nicest 6-4-3 DPs possible... A SS coming in and to his right results in a very difficult double play if the batter was even close to average speed. A low percentage play with a great potential outcome is sometimes worth it (or even necessary), but going home there is a free out 999/1,000. Catcher has to be at home when there's a runner on third. If SS throws to 1st for force out & makes an errant throw, catcher needs to run back to the plate anyway because of the runner on 2nd. Scott Servais is the Mariners manager and was a professional catcher for over a decade: "When the ball is hit, the first thing you are thinking is it's a double play, but Dylan (the SS) actually made the right read. He wasn't going to be able to turn a double play on that," Servais said. "He made a very athletic throw to the plate, and Omar just vacated too early. You got to make sure he is committed to going to second before you trail the play to go back it up."

So at 4:19 what happened was the ball hit off the wall twice, and Mahtook swatted it because he wanted to catch even though it was going to be a homerun anyway since it went over the wall. Also at 2:45, he dropped the ball but was able to pick the ball back up quickly enough to tag the runner because his foot wasn’t on the bag.

A bulk is simply when the pitcher makes the gesture to throw or steps off the bag but doesn't throw the ball anywhere. So when a pitcher makes a move, he actually HAS to throw the ball to a base to pick a runner off or he has to pitch the ball. If he doesn't throw it he is penalized, and the penalty is all runners on base advance 1 base. So pitchers essentially cannot fake a pick off or pitch.

A balk is when the pitcher motion offsets the pitch causing him to step over the pitchers mound while causing a weak grounded ball

So in the MLB the catcher backs up throws from second and short and Right Field backs up 3rd as well as short. At 8:30 Catcher should’ve stayed and Right Field should’ve been sprinting to back up the throw.

The catcher was.not there on that one play because we went down the 1st base line to back up the throw first base because with a man on first and one out all they had to do was turn a double play.

A Balk is when the pitcher doesn’t complete their full motion. Once you start your pitching motion you cannot stop it. Or if when there is someone on base and you dont set your feet and throw mid motion its a balk!
