His real name was Jiles Perry Richardson Jr. (The Big Bopper). He was only 28 when he tragically died in the plane crash in 1959 with Buddy Holly (22) & Ritchie Valens (17). "Chantilly Lace" was his biggest hit but he also wrote "White Lightning" which launched George Jones career in 1959 & also wrote "Running Bear" for Johnny Preston in the same year.

I'm giving away my age here, but my mom bought me a poodle skirt Bobby socks and I had saddle shoes when this came out. Great song.

If I remember right he was a radio dj before he started singing. Personality was pretty much a necessity back then for that job...lol.

This song was quite a hoot way back when. I get the giggles every time I hear it. And I have been around a LONG time and have heard a lot of different things. Oh baby you know what I like.

Welcome to one of the All time Classic Legends! Who tragically died way too soon; along with Buddy Holly, and Ritchie Valens, theses Legends were just taking off and had so much more to give. What a treat to see this live performance, yes the charisma, the comedic value transcended through the air waves in just his voice; but to see him live in person, really shows his warm character. One of the greatest songs about how dating is supposed to be, pick you up at 8 and don't be late and respecting a woman, as a Sister in Christ, not devaluing women as objects and things to be controlled and used at your convenience, the culture today needs to take lessons from the real gentlemen; Treat her Like, Treat her Like a Lady!

He was a radio personality while he was waiting to be discovered. Don McClean wrote a song about them, The Day The Music Died. HIS son looks and sounds like him.

The day the music died, it was called. Don McLean wrote a classic about that day called "American Pie" that you need to check out.

Yup I love artists that are involved in Entertaining their fans at all levels. Not many left today that truly love AND RESPECT their craft enough to also truly want to share that with their fans. As of now I am Big on Angelina Jorden and will always have Jethro Tull on that list along with Elvis and some other classics. You can see it when they take the stage and it's not about how big the crowd is or how much you are making, It's about the joy of making others feel and laugh and cray and want to be there to experience what you bring them. The Bards of old, I think Iean Anderson could be on that roster, perhaps even Angelina, our Barefoot princess of a hundred voices is. Id even say Lindsey Stirling enjoys preforming so her as well, I'd love to know more. Hit me with some names.

Hey bro, I love your reaction to the big bopper. Yeah this was a smash for him back in the day. it just saddens me when I think of the tragedy that fate had on those 3 gifted people. Also that young pilot as well. But I’m sure, they didn’t suffer long, if at all since it was so devastating on the body. Hopefully, We’ll get our chance to meet them in the other realm one day. 👍👍👍

Jerry Lee Lewis also had a hit with Chantilly Lace.
The plane crash he died in with Buddy Holly and Ritchie Valense was a lifetime of survivors remorse for Waylon Jennings because he was supposed to be on the plane but Ritchie was pretty sick so he gave Ritchie his seat and he took the long bus ride back. The weather was bad. He was devastated and felt so guilty about Ritchie being in his seat.
