This show had hit written all over it from day one! Everything about this show worked. The set looks great, Ben is great, the format is great, and that's why it lasted a good 6 years.

What an underrated period brainiac game show!!!! And Jimmy Kimmel cutting his comic teeth!! Unbelievable but true...my toddler son was obsessed with this show from day one, not that he understood what on earth was going on. So much so that when he eventually met Ben Stein in person, he couldn't piece together Ben in the flesh vs. Ben as an image in the television.
I used to watch this show all the time. And it was epic. Jimmy and his side jokes and Ben and the silly comments of the contests made this show so much fun. I find it interesting to see their paths nowadays. I remember Jimmy leaving the show and literally running outside across the street to his talk show. I think it was New Years or something. Jimmy went left and Ben went right political wise. I wonder if they're still friends. Especially since both have very strong political opinions.
It is nice to see this show again. I haven't seen this show or its first season in AGES. I needs to be seen in reruns again, if not revived (with a new host).

Ben Stein keeps the money in the prize budget not won by the contestants at the end of each production period. If during the production period the contestants' winnings exceed the prize budget, Producer pays the overage. So, even though it's not coming out of his pocket directly, he really is defending his money.

In this unusual quiz show, former Nixon speech writer, author, and actor _(Ferris Bueller’s Day Off)_ Ben Stein bet his own paycheck that he could outsmart contestants in a series of difficult questions. The show began with a $5,000 “pot.” If Stein could beat the contestants, he could keep it all; the more they won, the less he got. What did he think of the concept? “It was not my idea and I don’t like it,” he deadpanned. However, fortunately for him, Stein was a pretty brainy guy, and he usually managed to hang on to a portion, if not all, of the money. Adding to the levity was his rather dry, superior manner, and the contemptuous asides of his sidekick, Los Angeles radio announcer Jimmy Kimmel.
