To my ears, DR-1 has less cloudy low-mids (cleaner) and automatically it will be perceived as having better transparency and better separation. As a whole, it sounds great.
Listening a couple times online and to the WAVs, I agree DR-2 is more warm and saturated and muddy, DR-1 is more clear and subdued. I feel like ordinarily I'd prefer DR-1, but sometimes I'd prefer DR-2 for certain kinds of music, it's like chocolate and vanilla ice cream, why wouldn't I want both? And there you have it, you can choose DR-1 or DR-2 for your music of the hour!
I really liked this video and makes me wonder if I have to replace the 16 (I believe) capacitors for the Nichicons or the Kemets… Got a question, did you adjust the frequency response coils on both decks? Thanks for all. My deck is the DR-2.
What are "frequency response coils"? If I'm not mistaken, the only coils in a path are bias filters. FR is set with constant elements according to an equalization curve. It's possible to adjust lows of course, but with a soldering iron.
@@arturovillalpando289 I see what you mean. Yes, these coils make that equalization curve (by the way, Nak 68x makes no difference for SX/EX/ZX at that place and a thau is a constant for different tape types, but CR-1/2 does). But the curve itself must be a standard one. No tone board is expected in a cassette/r2r player actually -) May be it was set wrong by a previous owner. I'm a bit surprised to find an inductance as a part of an equalization (because of distortions it introduces), but this is Nakamichi. May be it's an essential ingredient of their recognizable sound. May be because of that people prefer to make records on Aiwas -)
I did not adjust, as the record curve was flat on my charts. However, I mentioned that it get more flat on a higher recording levels. Check my charts in upgrade videos. I installed these caps in my Sony 555 both esA and esJ, SACD Sony player and MD recorder. This significantly improved clarity and made response linear. Check my chart at the beginning of the video. I recommend to listen this video on a good speakers or high quality headphones as bass on DR-1 now incredible. And highs go beyond what cassette decks are supposed to do. Someone may like more warm sound of the Nichicons, but for me they now sounds muddy.
hi, i make my research and its said that in the Nakamichi DR-1 and -2 when they go out of the factory they have electrolytic capacitors. Why you change it for Solid Polymer or Nichicon capacitors? its better sound ?
Nichicon are electrolytes. Nakamichi has Nichicon installed from factory in DR-1/2. Just after 40 years electrolyte tends to dry out. Newly produced sounds better. And solid polymer has a superior performance parameters but way more expensive.
Ну вы еще посмотрите на график я нарисовал вначале. Мне больше нравится с полимерными конденсаторами. На слух высокие намного чище и бас сильно глубже. Прям пробирает. Послушайте эту запись на колонках или в очень хороших наушниках.
I uploaded the original wav files. Will be available for some time. drive.google.com/drive/folders/1wrBlimlEfXYup66t1I928EJZHs5MOnsj?usp=sharing
Check the bass at the end of the song, Nichicon is softer and not so deep

Interesting comparison. Which solid polymer caps are you using?
Check my upgrade video. I show everything in an every single detail.

@@sc0or Hi, I will try to point you out to the video where he recommends that adjustment. Regards.
Here, please watch his video “ How to improove sound of Nakamichi DR-2” as it was written by the author.

Hi, I am wondering if there is a way to contact you directly. I have a few questions regarding 700 ES. Maybe you can help. Thank you.

@@hifirulezzz merci beaucoup . thanks for the explanation. I have a Dr-3 , i like it alot.
