This is BY FAR the most undervalued freshwater fish. They put up an insane fight, they jump, they DESTROY spinnerbaits, frogs and jigs and they’ve been in the lakes for millions of years before all of the other species in your favorite lake (minus gar). Glad to see another channel getting serious about them.
110% accurate. I got laughed at yesterday while fishing when another group asked what I was targeting but I guess they’re just not into a fish that put a legitimate and exciting fight!
Nice dude. Such an underrated fish to target. It’s been years since I caught a bowfin. Fun multi species day. And a giant snapper to top it off 😂 Man those peepers are loud! Cheers!
The snapper was crazy. He was so close to getting a hold of me. I sure do love my bowfin that’s for sure man. Such an amazing fish with crazy power. The peepers were crazy loud that night. Full mating mode.
On the fly would be unbelievable and really not to tough seeing as they are very hard to spook. You can get right on top of them and dangle the fly in their face.
Man, that awful red/white plastic bobber is killing my and the steel leader is worse. 20 lb fluro leader and you’re so much better off. I do really appreciate that you named your body of water and documented when you were fishing. I’m always trying to learn and this was helpful to see that they were active really early very far north (I live in Arkansas).
Hey sweet video, I'm just wondering what glasses those are? And which brands you recomend? Right now I've got 2 pairs of Oakley prizms(amber, and blue lens) Im going to buy the Maui Jim's green double polarized next. I do you have any recommendations?
Hey man glad you asked these are melkin Waterland Co glasses. Honestly the best I have ever used. The link is in the description of the video. You won’t be disappointed in them I promise you that.
I have a video on the channel from last spring where I targeted them in Quebec where we are not aloud live or dead bait in the open water season. I like flukes, and flipping jigs for when I’ve seen fish and want something to put right in their face. When I’m searching for them a top water frog or spinnerbait are my go tos
Chatterbaits, Berkley PowerWorms, and Spinnerbaits are good options. I’ve gotten all caught up in fly fishing for them though. 7/8/9 weight with weighed streamers. Sight casting is so fun, but you can get without sight fishing them
Have caught a few bowfin in really shallow, weedy back sloughs while fishing for largemouth here in Wisconsin. Have also hooked into my fair share of snapping turtles too. I don't fuck with them though, as soon as I see it is a snapping turtle I just cut the line a couple feet away from the hook lol. Not worth getting bit by one of those.
The turtle was so close to getting me too. I thought initially I had him hooked in the head and I wanted to get it out. But after closer examination it was just hooked on the shell.
It obviously is hahaha. Link me your video I’d love to see how u catch them. I have another video where we smash bowfin sight fishing with flipping jigs. Maybe more up your alley

Yeah your right about the spinners. Had one wreck my favorite one today

Here in Vermont they are all over and fun as hell to fish for.

J'ai tellement hâte de retourner pêcher ce petit dur!! Merci pour ce vidéo!!!!
Pas de trouble. Une poison vraiment fort pi aggressive
One of my favourite species. You crushed them man! time to get the cutbait out.
It is definitely the time. They are out and about.
“it’s gonna be a bowfin video!” that’s why i’m hereee
Heck ya such an underrated fish. One of my favourites to pursue in the spring of the year
Looks like allot of fun. Never caught bowfins before. I didn't know we had some so close by.
Most waterways have them. Just to find shallow water with a lot of weed that will grow in the summer months. Bowfin will be close by
@@CastandConquer I think you are around south Glengarry. But is there bowfins on the Ottawa river?
I saw the owner of Bert’s Jigs from WayCross Ga. Fishing with spinner baits. He was having great fun
Spinnerbaits, topwater frogs and flukes are a great artificial bait choice
Good stuff dude, such an under appreciated fish!
One of my favourite fish to catch in the spring before the weeds gets to thick to see em in spots
Can’t steal the josh pig patrol song!!!! Lol but great video
I didn’t even realize it was a song he uses hahaha. We all get out music from the same places
Bowfin are by far my favorite species to catch
Such hard fighters

Glad u enjoyed the bobber and steel was what I had available to make it work. It ain’t pretty but they really don’t care.

Any tips for catching those without live bait? Great vid as always

@@CastandConquer we are launching in Cardinal. Will for sure say hi if we see you!!! Tight lines!

Damn that's huge
And to think I lost one a few days later that was a few pounds bigger
Braid tends to be waxy. Test your knots good
I agree it was not the knot that slipped but more just a line break from to vicious of a hookset
Ticks
So many ticks in this area
Is 15 pound test good?
I’d go at least 30lbs or more
Broooo your hook set was the reason you lost that fish lmao
We all know that was the main reason. Should of had that fish.
You call that a "little" creek? That's almost big enough to be considered a river
For us here it’s the size of a creek. It’s actually a canal system only about 2’ deep in this section
@@CastandConquer oh, looks deeper. Pretty wide though
No shit your line broke they have needle sharp teeth dude. Use a leader next time
I had a leader on 🤔🤫
This is how NOT to catch a bowfin.
