I promise you, the reason I didn’t play it right is because I was too lazy to record enough takes. I wanted to make a video as quickly as possible and shot our best performing short so far. Frusciante is great, of course.
@@sanyavanya yeah but it still shows that you can't just play it right on the spot without trying a few times. the muting is just not that easy with this riff.
I mean it's really not that great of a technique to credit to frusciante. It's a sloppy technique for real. But a technique none the less. And definitely not his best work. The riff itself even without the muted strings is more a testament to his skill then just playing the riff with all his muted strings.
Same. Couldn't stand the weather really forced me to get muting down. A lot harder to accurately mute the strings in it than in pride and joy which was a lot more forgiving.
It's not as easy as it looks, it takes a few hours to master it, I spent a while on it but I must admit that this exercise gave me a lot of skills for my solos, including freatboard control, I recommend it ❤
IMO its way easier to just mute all the strings with your 1st finger and play the notes with the other 3 fingers. If you're struggling with this give it a try, i play it that way and it sounds perfect, think of it like playing a barre chord with a delicate index finger
I do the stupudest thing that i like the most cause it gives me more control. I do the fruscante thumb instead of the full barre and during the second part where he plays open D i play the D on the low E string 10nth fret I am also sorry for the spelling i am FAR from being a native english speaker

For this song, Red Hot Chili Peppers vocalist Anthony Kiedis, wrote the lyrics, to match the music. The words are a rather random collection of thoughts, with some creative rhymes thrown in to match the rhythm of the song. Honestly can’t stop is one of these songs where it’s not about just playing after a tutorial, you have to learn the basic notes and the find a way by yourself to make it sound great. Or you are a genius and play after ear.
I tried that.., kept switching my 5way.., John Fruciante plays standing & positions his strum hand close to the bridge so that’s not a thing for him or me anymore..,
@@c0unterac342 then why aren’t you smart enough to figure out that Frusciante plays this song on a Tele??? Like almost all of the by the way songs? This song only works on a Tele. If you would have an ear for sound you would have recognized it in a heartbeat….
@@sanyavanya I consider myself a Strat player for 15 years now. But a Tele song is a Tele song… And RHCP is 40% Tele. I don’t know why this is an issue for someone people.
That's not very well explained, but we appreciate the intent 😅 see, it's like teaching someone how to play little wing and tell them : just play it like it should! Find a way! 😂😂😂 It's all a joke, lots of love, you are good player. However this songs deserves a little bit more explanation, we need to be explained like to a 3 year old 😂
There really isnt a specific technique. As long as you mute every string except the one you want to hit youre good. Some people will use different fingerings and different styles to mute, but whatevers comfortable for you

You need to pin your comment so it stays on top and more people see it
Bro got drunk in the last 2 seconds
underrated comment
Just goes to show how good Frusciante is, that the person trying to teach people how to play the song still can’t play it right
I promise you, the reason I didn’t play it right is because I was too lazy to record enough takes. I wanted to make a video as quickly as possible and shot our best performing short so far.

it gives u much control on rhythm guitar and ghost notes
This is perfect example why at the beginning good teacher is gold!

Imma tell my guitar teacher to teach me how to play riffs like this.
red hit chili peppers and nirvana great for beggier to interdermidiate level

You can do that, but it's not the way Fruciante play it

When the guitar teacher fucks up, then posts the video
Yup lol
Thank you! This is awesome!
A good version well done
This is helpful
It drives me absolutely insane seeing people just neatly picking the notes. It's a lifeless soulless version of such an amazing song
Lo haces ver tan fácil estimado. Good job!
I really would like to play this song for my family
Amazing riff
The art of sloppliness that me, Page and Frusciante have totally mastered.
This guy is the Ben Finegold of guitar. Brutally honest , sarcastic, but knowledgeable.
Very important part. Thank you
I love your guitar what is the colour you have?
Something like metallic turquoise, I guess.
It’s tidepool blue i have the same one
Both sounded good
i though your channel is full of tutorials but it's not which I was looking for but still thanks for this tutorial.
We're gonna make more tutorials, you can make suggestions and ask questions here if you want to influence the content on this channel.
If you listen to the recorded version frusiante actually messes up the riff a few times but keeps it in
Dann, 1st time in my life I actually understood his teachin music. Gotta start somewhere.
Some old-school cats would definitely call this "a feel thing".
Great!
Great tip Thanks man 👍
Need to use bridge pickup too
This dudes right. So many guys just pick the notes. John F would be pleased.
I have a problem where no matter what I do my muted strings make a weird sound
i never realised how much people could be playing this and this is my favourite song
I am currently practicing this song, but it has been difficult for me to achieve the technique
Damm that's good
hardest riff
it plays can't stop on the neck pickup
Damn, Is great dude🤘🤘
Thanks 😌
Me looking for the whole video at the LEDs of the microphone.
Damn, this is brilliant
bridge pickup broooo
It's called a mute and in tablature you mark all of the "dead" strings with and x
Does literally every guitar UA-camr have a version of this exact video?
damn, looks pretty hard
How you mute the D string? The only note I struggle
That thumb!!!
Strumming mute strings is the hardest part
one reason why sheet music is superior
that’s actually really hard
pickup the brigde 👀
why this guy look like the light heavy weight champion of the world
I tried that.., kept switching my 5way.., John Fruciante plays standing & positions his strum hand close to the bridge so that’s not a thing for him or me anymore..,
Foook
Make sure 5 out of six strings are muted
Proceeds to butcher it
It's so easy to mute strings when playing a bar chord. But it's so hard when you actually want to lol
So basically focus on hitting the strings as hard as possible first... and the melody second. Gotcha!
😫🙏🙏💓 bless my tomorrow s chemistry
Btw, what is this technique called? I see it a lot but I never hear a name
I think that hitting muted strings is called “Chicken Scratching”.
But this song should be played on bridge single
Never tried to but no want to.
And thus, funk guitar technique was born
Almost but never stop strumming. Also why on earth are you using the neck pickup?
Don’t tell anyone, but I don’t know shit about RHCP.
i think you missed a couple pickups
Seems easy but this riff is incredibly difficult to master
Typical Fruciante stuff.
my finger is too short 😂
And then proceed to slap it
This comment was made by the bass gang
Bass gang revolution
Yes
BEHS FOREVER BABY
Oh no guys I don’t think I can play that 😭
Fe
even he was messin up
Can't mute
Pues te sale regular
Or grab a bass and slaaaaaaap away 😉
I thought that was a given after listening to this song once
You think you really better than me mister?
And if you still have the feeling that something is missing after following all his tips …. Use a Tele
I strictly play tele 99% of the time but even I'm smart enough to recognize that RHCP sounds best on a strat

Omg get off that neck pickup 😅
I know right! It’s clearly bridge 😂 that should be the first thing you sort out to get this sounding right
yea but how do you do it, what's the technique, that's the problem with these teachers , they don't want to give up the secrets 🤔

He can't even play it right and he's the teacher
Funny thing the dude is trying to teach it without even doing it properly, with all due respect and reckoning frusciante is a sacred monster
That was dismal
Well explained but badly executed.
He’s right but his imitation of the technique and the chord at the end is TERRIBLE 🤣
Your guitar has to be out of tune to play this riff correctly.
You can't even play it
🤮🤮🤮
Gotta switch to that bridge pickup!! Nice video tho
Thanks! The thing is I don’t feel very comfortable playing RHCP through the humbucker :)
@@sanyavanya Didn't notice that at first haha. Good stuff!!
close enough
I can play the rift and sing the song perfectly.
Maybe you should learn to play before teaching people how to play, no?
