The drone coming through the flaming curtains was a practical effect?! No wonder the movie looked so good. When you put time and effort in like this is pays off.
Tom has a production company and is a hands on type of person.. he knows what he wants and surrounds himself with top people he has a saying that goes learn something new every day.........
This was such a good movie! The drone design was amazing in this movie! Such an underrated movie! This and Edge of tomorrow, 2 very good sifi Tom Cruise movies!
that drone that saves Jack's life from the scavs in the old library was really menacing... after its attack it moves in on javk and scans him then flies away... the sounds it makes are fantastic... the sound and set design for this film was unreal... tower 49 is one of my favorite sets ive seen.
The drones were probably programmed to not trust the Jack's completely. It would make sense that some Jack models would fail, become badly injured or perhaps have a mental breakdown. In that case, the drone would surely execute Jack and send a one-day delivery note to Tet for a replacement.
The sound track sets the tone of the movie..What would a drone sound like all depends on the propulsion system . rotors or jets have a unique sound, so future engines will have a unique sound of their own.....
The drones and helicopter designs were very cool....in fact, the drones added an enormous amount of atmosphere, not to mention a sense of genuine tension and menace. Oblivion is a wonderful film that, even though it may not have been appreciated as much as it deserved upon its release, is still destined to become a cult classic in the years ahead. Trust me on that.
In my opinion these drones were one of the best things from the film. I love everything about them from the sounds they make to when the weapons fire. Everything about them is awesome!!
4:38 "It would have another exhaust manifold" I love that discussions of this nature took place, it shows they were really trying to take mechanical principles into consideration. Their approach made it plausible to the audience that these drones were of human design, considering they appeared to be technological rather than the result of 'alien space magic', and matched in design with the other technology we see in use. Jack is seen actively repairing them too, so it tells the viewer that this machine is a physical piece of hardware, maintained and presumably built by humans. They also nailed the industrial design aspect, with the smooth surfaces and the clean white color, the drones are able to feel like a friendly unit until their guns are out and pointed at the camera. It's been years since I first watched this movie and I still have nothing but admiration for what the audio and visual teams were able to achieve.
Joseph Koniski is a really good director...his sense of design is just spot on. He really has a great understanding of design and how to get the best out of his production design team. No many directors can do that. Ridley Scott and James Cameron are two of the best at it. JJ Abrahams can really learn a thing or two from these guys.
Once we found out the drones were the bad guys and Jack was the bad guy clone with no memories, it all made sense . damn good movie that I can watch several times and never get tired of it
Thanks for uploading this. Awesome movie - really captured a lonely, creepy future. The drones were among the best robots I have ever seen. Loved everything about this movie. Pity so underrated.

That drone or machine or computer system looks so unbelievably real! And it hovers! I put it up there with the rolly Emperial drones from Star Wars clone wars. They resemble in that they are both sphererical in shape.
Drone design and sound really saved this film. They could have saved the budget on Tom Cruise and Morgan Freeman and it would have been a indie hit like Ex Machina.
Its weird how everytime I see a really cool, absolutely unique and inspiring scifi antagonist design its always a Tom Cruise movie. whether its the aliens from EOT or the Oblivion drones
I've seen drone designs from comics, movies, tv, and in real life but this one takes the cake. Make some modifications, paint them black, then build millions of them to help maintain order during the upcoming global dictatorship.
It's a great film but I always wondered why the drone (and the copter) were so Earth like in design. The "Tet" is an alien vessel, wouldn't it have alien looking drones?
I pondered the same question until I rationalised that the drones and the helicopter were (probably) intentionally designed to mimic human technology. After all, the Tet created a 'living lie' for clones Jack and Vika, therefore it would make sense that, in order to maintain this grand deceit, the appearance of these objects would have to be reasonably 'familiar' to them. Conversely, had the objects been quite clearly of alien design, then Jack or Vika would have had their suspicions aroused. Of course, as Jack had no reason to believe that he was anything other than a 'normal' human male, he would presumably need to have a reasonable grasp of advanced 'human' technology in order to carry out his repair duties. After all, if he didn't possess such knowledge, then he wouldn't be able to service the drones in the first place.
You do realise the Tet was pretending to be a human space station? So the clones have to be convinced of that to function psychologically. So human type stuff made by an Alien artificial intelligence.
This movie gets better with every behind the scenes fact i see. Its funny Tom Cruise is so unpopular amongst my movie friends we all avoided this movie 😅
sci-fi collector & enthusiasts alike would love to have a real life size BubbleDrone™ . . . made out of carbon fibre composites & lithium alloys, graphite etc . . . it'll feature full functionality just like that of the BubbleDrone™ as shown in the movie . . . a real life size iteration of the BubbleShip™ would be even great . . .
This movie was somewhat lame, I mean after the reveal of Morgan Freeman's group it wasn't very interesting or logical. Also the end of the film felt a bit strange. I just thought: so Olga Kurylenko will have to sleep with all Jacks and that's it? What the hell? 😮😅😅 The visual and sound design was very good, the plot and story development not that much.

3d artists put also a lot of time and efforts doing their job
Mission accomplished. These drones generated more emotions than many villians and can even give a good fight to “The Joker”
This was such a good movie! The drone design was amazing in this movie! Such an underrated movie! This and Edge of tomorrow, 2 very good sifi Tom Cruise movies!
Best movie drone design ever or in general, the sound design for them in the movie are a masterpiece.
The drones were such a great design and the sound effects for them were also superb.

Best Drones Ever! Sounds and all. Quirky good!
Thanx
A.G.Fisher Ah so you're the actual designer on this channel? You're welcome!
I wish they also talked about the sound the drone makes.. Besides the looks, drone's sound left quite an impact on the audience :D it was terrifying!
The sound track sets the tone of the movie..What would a drone sound like all depends on the propulsion system . rotors or jets have a unique sound, so future engines will have a unique sound of their own.....
4 years later but I always assumed the drones mainly made sounds to communicate with the jack clones

You designer and sound department nailed it... What a machine you show, your imagination ❤️
Wonderful effects, wonderful movie!

Thanx for the comment..we have almost everything except for a power source that is going to take some real out of the box thinking...
Just watched the movie a few minutes ago seeing how the Drones are made is amazing
Glad you liked it ....
Those drones were a fantastic design! Job well done, guys!
Joseph Koniski is a really good director...his sense of design is just spot on. He really has a great understanding of design and how to get the best out of his production design team.

I've watched this movie probably 20 + times but never noticed the little thrusters on the side.
The drones were terrifying as well
Once we found out the drones were the bad guys and Jack was the bad guy clone with no memories, it all made sense . damn good movie that I can watch several times and never get tired of it

Beautiful
These drones looks beautiful and scary at the same time
Perfeito , até o barulho que ele faz é dimais , lindo trabalho
outstanding movie,i don´t understand why there isn´t a pre- or sequel yet... :(
Great stuff. What a great job eh! Top soundtrack too
Thanx for the comment...
1:40 Glowing red robot eyes is so cliched
The drones were a great part of the movie. With their movements, rings and little whirly beeps, they had a sort of personality to them.
I am always amazed at the amount of detail put in to these movies
science fiction driving science ..
very well done sir!
everybody gangsta till the drone starts humming loudly
Drone: BAAAAAH!!
Anyone who played the old C64 game "Paradroid" will recognise the influence immediately.

Wonder who got to keep that thing must be badass as hell sitting in a living room
If I ever get rich as fk, I'd either buy one of these props or hire these folks to build me one.
Scariest piece of tech I've seen in a long time.
These guys should design a real space ship
The exterior of the drones was done by who? Wild Fashion?
L.A. Special FX.
I love this movie
Hay...... Ulrich glad you enjoyed ..
Drone design and sound really saved this film. They could have saved the budget on Tom Cruise and Morgan Freeman and it would have been a indie hit like Ex Machina.
Imagine waking up to this in your bedroom staring at you and making sounds
It already HAPPENED.....
That's probably the cutting edge of drone technology. TeT drones might become a reality.
A new power source and Engine is the only thing holding this back...
Its weird how everytime I see a really cool, absolutely unique and inspiring scifi antagonist design its always a Tom Cruise movie. whether its the aliens from EOT or the Oblivion drones
Tom is a pretty tech savy person he gives a lot of input on technology ..and design in his movies so you could say Tom has a lot of influence ...

Sally, aka The Tet, was destroyed - - end of story

What about the critic of CinemaSins that claims these drones are discount TIE Fighters?
I myself disagree entirely on that lazy and cynical comparison
Quick reminder. Cinemasins videos are mostly sarcastic and cynical criticism without any value for the sake of entertainment.

Mike a good point . The production designers and producers may have talked about the same thing.

We have the materials But what we don't have is a propulsion system..
So when the TET comes to Earth, we will already have its own drones to fight back with. lol
If that ever happens....I hope you are living off grid.. ;-)
