  • Did you know you can easily produce your own breadfruit trees through root cuttings?
DIY breadfruit propagation- this hybrid technique uses adventitious root shoots and air-layering to effectively produce a relatively large number of trees in a central location without needing a highly controlled environment or laboratory. This is a great technique for small and home nurseries or generating seed banks of breadfruit in remote locations with limited resources.
Adventitious root shoot propagation can be done at a faster rate in a more controlled environment by making cuttings from young root shoots and placing them in a substrate with (sometimes without) growth hormones, rather than doing an air-layering step.
ʻUlu or breadfruit is a highly nutritious starch that grows on a tree! It is productive and is an excellent food source providing ecological services such as carbon sequestration, soil stabilization, water infiltration, soil bioremediation, and shade!
Breadfruit has been utilized in places like the South Pacific Islands by kūpuna or ancestors for over a millennia which has played a key role in the continuity of indigenous peoples on remote islands! In South Kona, on Hawaiʻi Island the Hawaiians once maintained a large, 9 square mile breadfruit forest which our small farm, Māla Kaluʻulu Cooperative is working to revitalize today. In places like Savaiʻi, Samoa, to this day, you can find ʻulu planted all over at places like schools, churches and homes.
Today in Hawaiʻi, you will see businesses like Hawaiʻi ʻUlu Cooperative, where farmers are growing ʻulu in larger orchards and diversified agroforests and making amazing value-added food products out of breadfruit! People all over the world are seeking to develop breadfruit-based businesses, because of the human health, environmental and economical benefits.
