I am from Ohio and I was proud to see my state girl won that year.I too competed in the 2001 Miss Ohio Teen USA pageant in Columbus, Ohio. I did not place in the pageant but it was fun and a great experience maybe someday I will compete again in another pageant.
what's wrong with being gorgeous and showing that off? These girls have tremendous character by the way and dazzling personalities and they are not flaunting. They are being confident in themselves.Every teenage girl should aspire to be like these girls.
@BW022 Actually Melissa Witek has brains and beauty. She was CEO of a company in the tough granite supply industry and regularly works with Porsche. Having seen her in person she has both personality and brains and the guts to deal with the stress of both business and beauty. A very impressive lady.
Anyhow, going back to the real discussion, I thought the judges made the right choices for the top 5. Kansas has a stunning face but her body was arguably one of the most unfit amongst this batch. Of course it’s a natural teenage woman’s body but pales in comparison to Ohio, West Virginia, and Illinois. Michigan was tall and had long legs, making her stand out in this top 10. Lastly California advanced because of the beautiful face and superb catwalk!! Yes, she was skinny but that can be overlooked! The judges were spot on with the top 5 this year!
I vote Oklahoma, but California knows how to walk best in high heels, to make them bounce the most! (3:45-4:20) Kansas, very hot, but need to drop about 10 lbs. Georgia & Virginia honorable mention...
These are beautiful confident girls and they are role models for teen girls everywhere. It is more than just looks. It takes talent, dedication to fitness and nutrition, confidence, poise and plain hard work to look great in a bikini and these girls should be commended for showing off their beauty.
Kansas nailed this round but perhaps she was too "thick" for the judges liking. I think she had the best figure since she has curves. I was really hoping that she would try for Miss USA.
WOMEN, instead of what they are, underage GIRLS. This is a strange and conflicting message and it's no wonder our country is hated by many others. Not sayin' physical beauty is bad, but if an adult man (like a lot of the judges and guys involved) were to look at them lustfully, well that's "bad,crazy, perverted, etc". My 11 year old daughter will be both attractive, intelligent, and capable enough to do something like this, but I STRONGLY discourage her from viewing herself this way. Not easy!
The Miss Teen USA contestants are also articulate young women with great personalities. And yes mating potential is important when it comes to teenage girls and this portion allows us to see who has most desirable physical traits for intercourse. A bikini and heels are considered "power" suits for beautiful young teenage girls and is the best way to display her amazing attributes and tremendous character. They look amazing in their suits by the way. Their parents should be proud!

Say they do double duty as nurses..that is a positive quality b/c their beauty is art and they are showcasing it to us. The confidence to strut their stuff in a bikini is something to be admired as well by both sexes.

These women don't even realize the value of their own self worth.....hope they don't ever forget to bring their receipt books. They're highly marketable but only if they realize it.
It is hard for California to win any pageant being they have won more times than any other state exceptTexas. Any other state can win except California and Texas when it comes to pageants.

@BW022 in pageants there are different rounds, one being an interview where they can state what they have worked on. Also, their volunteer work is not the only thing to be admired. The extraordinary women you have mentioned are that, extraordinary, but they led normal lives until they graduated at around 21 or so. They didn't contribute to society much until then. Teens competing in the USA pageant are no older than 19 and no younger than 14.
A good demonstration of how America promotes healthy people, i bet the unhealthy people are the first to complain. im off to the gym now to get in shape! if your offended or not offended by this like me then so should you! il be raisin my kids in America!
