    A purolator filter with no excess glue ! Amazing ! All that soot is from EGR gases routed back into the engine to be reburned and slow combustion ! Soot is only like .02 microns so the filter did well catching it ! 👍

      @@user-sf7kl9uh7k As noted, all the Boss filters I've seen have looked to be well made. I can't say it's why the oil looked "clean", just that I think the Boss filter did its job.

    Interesting video. That filter trapped a lot of soot that almost every filter I have seen allowed to pass. I hope to see more of these tested in the future. Too bad we don’t know the past history of this engine. The possibility exists that the Mobil 1 is cleaning up past transgressions, and the filter is picking them up.

    I’m running several different part number numbers of the Boss filter and they’ve all looked great after use. I expect nothing less from a top shelf filter. When you are charging customers $12-up for an oil filter you better get the quality control right.

    Great Job, Pete!
    The filter and oil definitely did its job. Might need to run some carbon cleaner through the engine before the next oil change but the filter certainly looks like it caught it all. Good looking filter, makes me glad I switched to them. No sloppy glue, good components It is worth the few extra dollars.
    I do have to say I am impressed with the paint job on the can. It is nicer than some new cars being made now.

    Good video again! Like many newer GM oil filter applications this filter has a higher 22 PSI filter bypass relief valve setting. Can't help but wonder if GM is on to something for the DI engines judging by all that soot in the media.

    John should switch to Pennzoil Platinum. Not only is it cheaper but it has a better ad pack with a natural gas base oil. My Acadia has the same engine and there's a noticeable difference after switching from Mobil 1 to Pennzoil Platinum.

    Looks like the Boss is Boss with taming that 3,6 GM soot monster ,these motors run on the sooty side ,i have the same issues with mine & now run the ACDELCO gold filter & change the oil every 5000 miles or earlier, i wouldn't hesitate to use the Boss though as its catching all the soot

    I try and make an oil filter inspection video every Friday on this UA-cam channel, Thank You!

  • @softwaresignals
    @softwaresignals 2 місяці тому +2

    Fun thing I noticed here: This oil filter has the same media area as the much smaller Purflux LS350. The LS350 has 40% less volume but the same area! reference ua-cam.com/video/sKtnzuKUEEA/v-deo.html ZigZag oil filter media does this, unique to Purflux. Should catch/hold more dirt and flow better, fewer bypass events with the more media surface area.

    • @faxmen09
      @faxmen09 2 місяці тому

      One can't directly compare area of Boss synthetic 'depth' media to Purflux blended 'surface' media. They work differently to catch particulates. That said, I'm confident both would flow fine in passenger cars use.

    • @softwaresignals
      @softwaresignals 2 місяці тому

      @@faxmen09 Actually the Boss doesn't do a lot of Depth Filtering like you would guess. Thickness of Boss vs. Purflux is similar, and notice the Ascent Filtration tests done a while back on bobistheoilguy showed far less depth filtering compared to the true standard for depth, the old-style pink media Fram Ultra. IOTW, the Boss had average filter efficiency with a high flow resistance, the opposite of what depth filtering buys you.

    • @WhipCityWrencher
      @WhipCityWrencher  2 місяці тому

      One thing with full synthetic filters is that the filter media is soft compared to paper or blended media. I personally think the full synthetic filters can hold more carbon/soot inside the media, whereas the other media seem to hold more carbon/soot on the outside.JMHO

    • @faxmen09
      @faxmen09 2 місяці тому

      @@softwaresignals It's still a synthetic depth media vs a blended surface media. Media area comparison not valid. As for efficiency, a strawman, irrelevant to media area comparison.

    • @faxmen09
      @faxmen09 2 місяці тому +2

      @@WhipCityWrencher Yep, fwiw Whip agree with you on Boss full syn media. But, as i noted to you before, Boss get little or no love on site you're familiar with.😉 While I don't use the Boss, price being right I;d have now problem using it.

    John should switch to penzoil ultra platinum and could stretch it to 7-8k miles. That’s an expensive filter for only 5700 miles. Or change the oil and keep the filter on for 2 oil changes.

    • @F0XD1E
      @F0XD1E 2 місяці тому +1

      IMO if I'm doing my own oil changes and getting under the car, I'm changing the filter. It's not that much more money. This filter looked like it was pretty used up. Wouldn't want to risk reduced flow towards the end of the second interval.
