- A DIY auto mechanic describes tips to replace rear brake pads on a 2014 Toyota Corolla.
Common symptoms of worn brake pads include a chirping or metallic scraping sound near wheels when the car is moving forward or backward, longer stopping distances, brake fluid low, and or a longer travel distance for the parking brake lever.

Notes:
Rotors should be turned or resurfaced during every other (2nd) brake pad replacement. If you can replace the rotors yourself, many times the job will cost less than resurfacing. Always replace rotors and brakes in pairs (front /rear).
Can you check the rotors without removing the wheel?
If you have an open-spoke wheel design, you can run your finger vertically down the brake rotor friction surface. If you can feel and see noticeable grooves, then it's time for new brake rotors. For cars with hub caps that don't expose the rotor, you will need to remove your wheel to inspect your brake rotors.
PPE
1. Gloves amzn.to/3g6diM6
2. Safety glasses amzn.to/3CvVe5O
3. Long sleeve shirt amzn.to/3CW9Igw

Thank you for the great video. I'm doing my first Toyota Corolla brake job on my sister in laws car and found your video very helpful. I'm sure you'll agree that when performing a brake job, you'll almost always have a couple of hiccups, but if you stay calm , as you have in this video, you'll be able to work through the hiccups and complete the job without a lot of frustration. Thanks again.
That's a difficult way. Remove sliding pin bolts, lift off caliper, bridge should remain bolted to the axle housing. Pads are easily accessible and fitting then back into the bridge is much easier this way. 5 minute job.
Yeah. Never seen anyone go this this much trouble unless replacing the rotor too.
@ronmoore6598 it's not even that much trouble even when replacing rotor.
Always easier to split the caliper from.the bracket.
Thanks for the video. Do you have to release the hand brake in order to rewind the piston?
The hand brake will need to be released to perform the repair. Great question.
Is the special piston spreader needed or can I use a normal spreader and use the old pad to push the piston in?
The spreader needs to fit onto the piston so that it can't force it to spin.
Do you turn both sides clockwise for the piston to retract
Yes
Thanks for your advice
I followed all the steps and the only difference is that I had these two wire springs inside the calliper assembly that fell out when removing the old brakes. Installed the new brakes without them as I had no clue how those would have been reinserted?
@@protipsplus I’m confused because you did not have these springs in yours and you have the same year and model as my car?
@PedroFilms
If the brakes are working fine then the springs likely connect to the parking brake. You can call me on what's app
I videod a car with Disc brakes. You must have drum brakes and brake shoes. SEE ua-cam.com/video/eG6ru9doLNg/v-deo.htmlfeature=shared
@@protipsplus I think they are meant to keep the pads from riding the disk when not engaged. I’ll have to investigate it next weekend however as I’m working late this entire week.
No need to go to all that bother , two sliding bolts removal is way quicker.
Agreed
Does a Toyota quest rear brake caliper piston tunes clockwise
Not 100% sure, but you can purchase a caliber piston compression kit from AutoZone. Keep the receipt and return it after you're finished. Speak with the parts clerk or manager. They allow this on a regular basis.
Why didn’t you replace the rotators?
They did not need to be replaced, and it wasn't the focus of the video.
