  • High temps nationwide are leading to a surge of heat-related deaths and injuries. A 66-year-old man died of suspected heatstroke at Maravi, a mountainous scenic spot in Hualien. The man, surnamed Yang, was part of a four-member hiking group. Others in his group also suffered heatstroke and were airlifted away to receive medical care. We reached the victim on June 26. But due to poor weather conditions, the National Airborne Service Corps tried but was unable to complete the airlift. On June 27, we and the initial response team worked together to relocate the victim.
Due to the ongoing heat wave, average Hualien temperatures have stood above 33 degrees Celsius, with perceived temperature reaching as high as 38. In Hualien’s Sincheng Township, a postal worker collapsed from suspected heatstroke and fell into a coma.
