Criteria is very inconsistent, I agree. However there isn't a point system. Part of it has to just be feeling. You might say: I value world cup performances very high in Balon D'or ranking. That doesn't mean that every world cup year a world cup winner has to win the bD'or. Context always matters. Criteria is very inconsistent, I agree. However there isn't a point system. Part of it has to just be feeling. You might say: I value world cup performances very high in Balon D'or ranking. That doesn't mean that every world cup year a world cup winner has to win the bD'or. Context always matters.
The only 2 years a bD'or winner was not a world cup winner in a wc year were 2010 and 2014. Why? 2 reasons: In those years there was not one clear stand out player at these world cup winning teams. Not like Messi in 2022 or R9 in 2002 or Zidane in 1998. That already makes it a bit more difficult. You might say: but what about 2018 and 2006. That brings me to reason number 2: in 2010/2014 the two best players ever were playing at the absolute peak of their power.
Is it really that strange that in a year when there isn't a clear cut best player on a wc winning team, that the award goes to one of the two best players ever at their peak? This doesn't mean that we now have to push a wc winner to the side every year. If Modric would have had his 2018 run in 2014 instead, he wouldn't win the b D'or.

Reason I don't buy into, "the game's gone" narratives is because;
1. We compare athletes we saw in their peak with the new pre-peak generation that's just coming into their own. We forget that the average elite team age in Europe right now is 24 years old and most elite teams only get into their bag at an average squad age of 27 years old. So comparing peak peak Suarez to Endrick is stupid, or peak Van Basten to Haaland. Pedri, Bellingham, Vini, Rodrygo, Saka, Yamal, Haaland aren't even in their peak or close to it.
