My template has a handful of sub-masters. My motivation is that I have an orchestra and a metal band and I want to mix each separately and then blend them together. My chain is similar to yours, e.g. Violins (instrument) > Strings (bus) > Orchestra (sub) > Master. This is true for all instruments in my template. I also have sub-masters for vocals, instruments (these are random stuff that I use like underscores, other acoustic instruments, synths, etc), sound effects and last but not least I have a sub-master for the send effects, like reverbs.

Good stuff for Reaper users... other Daw users not so much

Why? I do this in Studio One. I'm very familiar with Reaper and standard DAWs (Cubase, Pro Tools, etc) that isn't able to do this. Maybe there's an exception but anything that supports busses can easily implement it.

Is sub master also referred to the as mix bus?
