The empresas forestales (which sell wood) just love to plant eucaliptus and pines wherever they can for their business. They usually can't plant 'em, though, because native species occupy most of the soil and they are protected by law. So these fires are very convenient: native species are burned down and the soil is rendered useless, so they are payed to plant new trees and they use monocultivos, which are eucaliptus and pines. These trees suck all the water out of the ground and kill everything around 'em (eucaliptus need 40 liters of water every day), so the ground is very dry and burns easily. You see? it's a endless cyclw of fire, getting payed to plant new trees and then burning it all down again. Any goverment in Chile is just working for the owners of Chile, because we are a corporate State, ravaged by neoliberalism. So the government is barely doing anything because they want it all to burn. It's just business. And not to mention that we will have to vote for a new president very soon, and the sentiment against Bachelet is already very strong, so this just increases the hatred towards her. So they make money and put Piñera on the throne next time. It's a great plan for them. The problem is that people die and suffer and they don't care. I think it's appalling. oh, and the kiss is the best. Greeting everyone just with a handshake and keeping your distance is so cold! Americans need more latino fire and start kissing everyone!

haha americans have plenty of latino fire, but the latinos we have are not of the kissing latino cultures. we usually only kiss with relatives for greetings and goodbyes. I agree though that just a handshake seems cold, we need more hello and goodbye kissing up here!

there are a few comments saying all this fires thing is almost planned by the government, please guys.. we all know that our government is not the most efficient of the world but saying they are practically cooperating with the spread of fires is a little crazy (like 9-11 conspiracies kind of craziness). One guy even say that only CONAF is doing something not the government, well, CONAF is a state organization... In my opinion the government is doing what they can with what they have, the problem is that it could be more if policies regarding to the administration of catastrophes had been more efficient in the last years, They shouldn't have been prepared only for normal situations but also for exceptional ones (like this fires, the biggest of our history).. and that means, for example, buying equipment that is apparently unnecessary in most cases but essential in this kind of events. Hi Jon, yes they are doing since day one. I have a very close friend in the army a Colonel matter of fact, and they have been working alongside the firefighters. We usually deal with situations like this, but the problem is that the fires are intentional. We shouldn't focus our energy on the negative things. And that is the only thing that sales. About the kiss, at my school lots of guys kissed guys, me included and I kiss everybody from my family, boy or girl, it's a personal thing and definitely not that common for some people. I'm learning that more guys kiss other guys than I ever knew here in Chile! I know that in Argentina they do that but I had never seen that here. Thanks for the update on the kissing! About the hugs... Yes, hugging is also weird but not as much as the kiss. In my family we give hugs for special events or after not seeing someone for a long time. This is typically when that happens so the amount of hugs is strange but we are someone used to it. The kiss, not so much!

I’m from Chile and I had the opposite problem when I went to the US, it’s soo awkward to try to kiss in the cheeks because you’re used to. Btw you’re videos are very good, I love the editing. Ps: I don’t know if you know it but here in Chile the firemans aren’t paid as in the US (and almost elsewhere)

El gobierno es bastante ineficiente en entregar ayuda, pero en momentos de crisis es cuando sale lo mejor de los chilenos. El 2014 hubo un incendio gigantesco en Valparaíso, se quemaron numerosos cerros. El mismo día de los incendios con un amigo subimos con un par de gente a salvar animales, no íbamos muy equipados pero entregamos lo que teníamos a la gente que lo había perdido todo y esa gente que ya no tenía nada se preocupaba por nosotros, nos dieron agua, comida y equipo a cambio de escuchar sus historias. Creo que eso es Chile su pueblo, no su gobierno. Siempre en tiempos críticos, sale lo mejor de nosotros :) Btw, amo sus videos, have a great day 😊

The formal kiss is more on the air, not on the face. Is a quick face to face touch. I HATE when guys place their actual lips on my cheek. Girls dont do that. And if they do, they freak me out. The actual kiss goes to actual friends and family.

I'm chilean and I'm against the kiss on the cheek. It's an invasion of personal space. Maybe a woman doesn't want to kiss you. Why should she feel obliged to do it just some kind of weird protocol? About the video I disagree with the treatment of those people against the president. Controlling these fires in Chile is extremely difficult. There are emergency protocols and bringing dozens of planes without the capacity to replenish them or evaluating the terrain is foolish. There was a lot of populism in the way the media covered the fires.

Ya has visto seguramente lo que ha pasado en tu país, en California, y en otros como Australia. Honestamente, la gente en Chile solemos ser muy autoflagelantes en estos hechos, y siempre pensamos que nadie hace nada, especialmente el gobierno. La realidad, es que en los eventos del verano pasado se movilizaron todos los recursos del país, tanto del gobierno, bomberos y particulares. El problema a mi juicio, fue la lentitud inicial para tomar medidas, ya que se esperó que la situación se volviese incontrolable. También hay mucha irresponsabilidad del personas, por ejemplo con las basuras, las quemas de pastizales, o construir en lugares de alto riesgo, donde el "gobierno" les prohíbe construir, pero la gente insiste (como ocurre en Valparaíso). Y por otro lado, con esto del cambio climático, que se ha comprobado está relacionado con la mayor frecuencia y magnitud de estos incendios, no existe ningún país en el mundo realmente preparado para enfrentar estas catástrofes, ni siquiera el tuyo. No se como darme a entender pero la gente que esta sin casa ni comida por algún evento fortuito como lo han sido estos incendios, siempre esta enojada y es de entender porque todo lo que construiste en tu vida desaparece en cosa de segundos, creanme cuando digo que sé la impotencia que se siente, pero detesto ver a la gente en la television o internet exigiendo que la presidenta venga " ahora ya!" hasta el lugar de los sucesos, ¿que creen que va a hacer ella en terreno? ¿quieren que esté con una manguera apagando el fuego? ¿quieren que pilotee el avión? personalmente creo que ella puede hacer mas sentada en su escritorio junto con las personas correpondientes. Sobre el avión, se dijo que era inútil que viniera, pero cuando alguien lo trae se ve que es posible PERO es poco eficaz, el unico aeropuerto capaz de contener un avion de esa embergadura está en santiago. Eso quiere decir que el avion va a salir 2 veces al día y aparte tien que estar el viento a su favor (cosa que pasa solo de vez en cuando) para que el avion pueda tener visibilidad del lugar. O sea que tampoco fue la gran idea. Mi punto es, que con desesperacion la gente inventa, miente y cree cualquier estupidez que le dicen, la gente habla y grita y levanta los brazos sin saber como funcionan los protocolos de emergencia. La gente es alarmista y eso no esta bien. No quiero profundizar en lo politico porque no tiene caso. Y gritandole a la gente del gobierno tampoco se consiguen grandes cosas, es mejor coordinarse y pedir ayuda.
No estoy para nada de acuerdo contigo, la Presidenta cuando estaban los incendios, estaba haciendo eventos de homenajes. Todos los aviones, el grande y el resto sirvieron, logran hacer que sea más fácil que entren los bomberos y voluntarios a lugares afectados. Y este país ya tiene que estar listo para tener aviones que sirvan para apagar este tipo de catástrofes, si no están los aeropuertos adecuados hay que hacerlos, no quedarse con que no hay y punto. This is literally a living hell for those people! I get so anxious everytime I watch the news! About the kiss, at my school lots of guys kissed guys, me included and I kiss everybody from my family, boy or girl, it's a personal thing and definitely not that common for some people. My question is, what about hugs? Is it awkward as well, i'm a hugger so it would be nice to know! Great vid!!!
I'm learning that more guys kiss other guys than I ever knew here in Chile! I know that in Argentina they do that but I had never seen that here. Thanks for the update on the kissing! About the hugs... Yes, hugging is also weird but not as much as the kiss. In my family we give hugs for special events or after not seeing someone for a long time. This is typically when that happens so the amount of hugs is strange but we are someone used to it. The kiss, not so much!
At least in Santiago, among friends, family it is normal for men to greet each other with a hug and a kiss on the cheek.

I’m from Chile and I had the opposite problem when I went to the US, it’s soo awkward to try to kiss in the cheeks because you’re used to.

Se que el vídeo es antiguo, pero me gustaría aportar algo quizás a los comentarios, algo que quizás ustedes también vieron allá. El gobierno es bastante ineficiente en entregar ayuda, pero en momentos de crisis es cuando sale lo mejor de los chilenos. El 2014 hubo un incendio gigantesco en Valparaíso, se quemaron numerosos cerros. El mismo día de los incendios con un amigo subimos con un par de gente a salvar animales, no íbamos muy equipados pero entregamos lo que teníamos a la gente que lo había perdido todo y esa gente que ya no tenía nada se preocupaba por nosotros, nos dieron agua, comida y equipo a cambio de escuchar sus historias. Creo que eso es Chile su pueblo, no su gobierno. Siempre en tiempos críticos, sale lo mejor de nosotros :)

The formal kiss is more on the air, not on the face. Is a quick face to face touch. I HATE when guys place their actual lips on my cheek. Girls dont do that. And if they do, they freak me out. The actual kiss goes to actual friends and family.

About the video I disagree with the treatment of those people against the president. Controlling these fires in Chile is extremely difficult. There are emergency protocols and bringing dozens of planes without the capacity to replenish them or evaluating the terrain is foolish. There was a lot of populism in the way the media covered the fires.

Honestamente, la gente en Chile solemos ser muy autoflagelantes en estos hechos, y siempre pensamos que nadie hace nada, especialmente el gobierno. La realidad, es que en los eventos del verano pasado se movilizaron todos los recursos del país, tanto del gobierno, bomberos y particulares. El problema a mi juicio, fue la lentitud inicial para tomar medidas, ya que se esperó que la situación se volviese incontrolable. También hay mucha irresponsabilidad del personas, por ejemplo con las basuras, las quemas de pastizales, o construir en lugares de alto riesgo, donde el "gobierno" les prohíbe construir, pero la gente insiste (como ocurre en Valparaíso). Y por otro lado, con esto del cambio climático, que se ha comprobado está relacionado con la mayor frecuencia y magnitud de estos incendios, no existe ningún país en el mundo realmente preparado para enfrentar estas catástrofes, ni siquiera el tuyo. Estás leyendo las noticias correctas! Es una vergüenza para el país porque todos los veranos ocurren los mismos incendios y el gobierno no hace nada o casi nada. Otro punto muy importante es el hecho de que los bomberos en Chile son completamente voluntarios, nadie les paga por poner su vida en riesgo con el fin de salvar a sus compatriotas.

about the fires... yeah most of the people protest against our president, because she is not doing anything! she never gives us solutions to our catastrophes, for example in the earthquake of 2010.

debo reconocer que quedé un poco enojada con el video que pusiste de la gente hablando con la presidenta. No se como darme a entender pero la gente que esta sin casa ni comida por algún evento fortuito como lo han sido estos incendios, siempre esta enojada y es de entender porque todo lo que construiste en tu vida desaparece en cosa de segundos, creanme cuando digo que sé la impotencia que se siente, pero detesto ver a la gente en la television o internet exigiendo que la presidenta venga " ahora ya!" hasta el lugar de los sucesos, ¿que creen que va a hacer ella en terreno? ¿quieren que esté con una manguera apagando el fuego? ¿quieren que pilotee el avión? personalmente creo que ella puede hacer mas sentada en su escritorio junto con las personas correpondientes.
Sobre el avión, se dijo que era inútil que viniera, pero cuando alguien lo trae se ve que es posible PERO es poco eficaz, el unico aeropuerto capaz de contener un avion de esa embergadura está en santiago. Eso quiere decir que el avion va a salir 2 veces al día y aparte tien que estar el viento a su favor (cosa que pasa solo de vez en cuando) para que el avion pueda tener visibilidad del lugar. O sea que tampoco fue la gran idea.
Mi punto es, que con desesperacion la gente inventa, miente y cree cualquier estupidez que le dicen, la gente habla y grita y levanta los brazos sin saber como funcionan los protocolos de emergencia. La gente es alarmista y eso no esta bien. No quiero profundizar en lo politico porque no tiene caso. Y gritandole a la gente del gobierno tampoco se consiguen grandes cosas, es mejor coordinarse y pedir ayuda.

No estoy para nada de acuerdo contigo, la Presidenta cuando estaban los incendios, estaba haciendo eventos de homenajes. Todos los aviones, el grande y el resto sirvieron, logran hacer que sea más fácil que entren los bomberos y voluntarios a lugares afectados. Y este país ya tiene que estar listo para tener aviones que sirvan para apagar este tipo de catástrofes, si no están los aeropuertos adecuados hay que hacerlos, no quedarse con que no hay y punto. Harto dinero hay para los lujos que se da el gobierno.
