  • Dutch iris bulbs are easy to grow in a sunny position with a well drained soil.
    They can be planted any time from autumn through to the end of winter.
    They will flower in spring and grow well both in the garden and in a container.
    In this video we look at how to plant and grow them, planting depth, when to fertilise them and watering requirements.
    They come in a number of flower colours and make great cut flowers. And yer, they are planted with the pointy end up.

    Thank you for a simple, clear video (as someone else mentioned, with no background music) that highlighted for me not to plant my impulse bought bulbs in our clay soil that is currently saturated from constant rain for two months! They've gone in a couple of containers instead.

    So what do you do with them once they have died off? Mine are in a pot and I live in Perth, so was wondering if I should leave them in the pot they are in full sun, with no water. Or should I move them to a more shaded dry area until next year?

      We just shift ours into a shady area, and then repot every two or three years.

    Can i put them in a pot where i have already put in pansies. Its a very nice big blue clay pot so i dont really want the brown folliage hanging there after theyve bllomed . Any ideas? Perhaps i can dig them up foliage and all and put them in another pot?

    • @johnnyAGardening
      @johnnyAGardening  6 місяців тому

      You can, however you do need to let the foliage die back to give them energy for the next year. Transplanting after flowering may or may not work..... As the foliage dies back you camn remove it, so the brown foliage can be removed and leave them in the pot. Hope this helps.

      Let the foliage die back, the foliage puts energy back int to bulbs.

    please clear something up for me. I have read several places that state when plant iris bulbs, plant them about 4 inches deep. but other places i have read i am to plant iris bulbs with part of pulps exposed to the elements. Could you please clarify which one is right so I can plant mine correctly, please.

      Two types of Iris, Dutch and some others bulbs and are planted deep. Others are rhizomes, planted near or on the surface.

    I have some in shade, they have not flowered, although they still have foliage. Can I transplant them to sunny spots?

    • @johnnyAGardening
      @johnnyAGardening  4 роки тому +1

      You should wait until they are dormant before transplanting. If you transplant now they will be unlikely to flower this season anyway, and you also run the risk of damaging the bulbs.

    Which is the top and which is the bottom? There's a white shoot which I thought was a root but I'm not sure. Obviously I'm a beginner gardener.

    Dutch iris need cold to bloom?

    • @johnnyAGardening
      @johnnyAGardening  3 роки тому

      Simple answer is no. However they do not like hot humid climates.
      What we call Dutch Iris are actually hybrids from a number of species from Portugal, Spain and North Africa.
      So they actually like a Mediterranean climate, They do like cool winter nights and need a good amount os sun / light to flower well.
      You can force them to bloom by giving them a cold treatment for around 8 weeks. This simply tricks them into thinking they have had a winter.

    Hey!! I planted some bulbs and covered them back with dirt and then wood mulch on the very top. I assumed if I planted them in mid October they wouldn’t grow until next spring... but I already have maybe 2-3 inches now above the ground poking out... I don’t know what happened lol help!!

    What is bone meal?

      Also called Blood and Bone.

    • @Roxy222uk
      @Roxy222uk 3 роки тому

      Bonemeal is a product you buy from a garden centre or similar supplier. It is literally ground up bones, I would presume left over from meat production, which makes it a good thing (unless you're veggie/vegan). It's a powder that you sprinkle on the surface of the soil and then water in. It's always been in a cardboard box when I've bought it and not particularly expensive. I tend to go for bone, blood, and fishmeal powder as it seems this would be more all round nourishing, but I could be wrong.
