I am in the process of buying another ‪@harleydavidson‬ because it's an addiction and don't judge me. Anyhow, I just got to almost the end of the bargaining and suddenly the price increased more than 25%!!! What the hell is going on with these dealers?

Recently stopped at a dealer to get a shirt while on vacation many miles from home. Walking in the salesman started talking to me and I told him I was there for a shirt. He still tried getting me to buy a bike and telling me he could ship a new bike home for me. Even after I said I just bought a bike a couple months ago he tried saying I could use another and never asked what I bought or anything. These people make you not even want to stop into the dealers. It’s getting ridiculous

Heading up to sturgis in 21 I got a bad wobble above 90. Stopped at Flamming gorge harley in wyoming and asked them to check it out. It was about 530 right before close. They pulled my bike in. Went through it. Pulled my rear tire dismounted it and took the beads out, mounted it and rebalanced it. Got me out in about and hour and half, charged me $140 bucks. By far the best dealership around me

As long as people continue paying the ridiculous markups the BS will continue. If everyone refused to pay it, then we might see MSRP or below again. Mark ups, $1000 surcharges, prep fees, doc fees, it’s all BS.

I've said that from the first. It's just like Sturgis. If people refuse to pay 3/$55 for a tee shirt it will go back to the 3/$35 I pay prior to tge rally and after the rally it gets to 6/$50 or less.

I was shopping for a Low Rider S last year & the only place here that had one that particular day quoted me $35,000. For a stock LR-S. I literally laughed. I waited two weeks later and ended up getting one AND the 131ci kit (including labor) for $25K.

About 2018-2019 I was looking to get my dream bike, a Road Glide. I went to both of my local dealerships (actually owned by the same company) and they were thousands over MSRP. I tried to talk to the salesman and he called over the sales manager who told me to my face, he didn't need my business. So I went and got an Indian. I eventually talked to a dealer a town over and got a great trade on my Indian and a descent deal on my RG. But I still ended up paying over MSRP because of all the dumb little fees they charge. $350 for paperwork? It takes them less than an hour to do paperwork so you're telling me a pencil pusher is worth more per hour than a certified service tech?

Yea bro a new 2023 RG standard cost fkn $30k out the door. Yes it has the nice screen and RSRS etc …
And they tossed in saddle bag guards and let me take some of my shit off my road king like the mirrors I really love…. But still
$22k msrp .. couple grand for the upgrades ..
So $25k we shall say ..
5k in fees and taxes etc ?!
I found out a month later that setup is reimbursed by the MoCo to the dealers. Sooooo they hitting us with set up when MoCo pays the dealer for it ?
Good thing I love my RG more than any non living thing on earth .. well…. Some living things too.
Dream bike. 8900 mikes put on in 3 months …

Last year I had a local HD dealership quote me a 33% over MSRP price on a StreetGlide ST. When I commented about it they literally said "Well, it's a super popular model"
I then pointed out that I was asking about it because they had TWO of them on the floor that had been there for at least 2 months that I was aware of. "They may be popular but not at your prices" and walked out.
Two days later I was paying MSRP for a SG Special at a different place down the road.

I just bought a 1017 Road Glide Ultra from one of the few non corporate Harley dealers in Michigan. The bike was listed on the website for $18,000 low mileage bike so it wasn't horrible. I went and looked at it, rode it, and had my wife on the back and she LOVED it. Got back to the dealer and started going over the numbers and the salesman, who was new there, comes out with $21,500. I responded as you did. " It's on your website for $18,000. Complete silence. I pulled up their site and showed him, he talked to the sales manager. The next thing I know, the owner and manager are over with me apologizing for the mix-up. I ended up with an extra $800.00 on my trade-in and took the bike home for $16,800.

Bought a BMW bike this year, 12% under MSRP "out the door", still have to wait for it to be manufactured and shipped. Overall very pleasant buying experience. Asked the sales guy straight up to make me an offer I can't refuse, which was already absurdly competitive compared to the other dealers I have been at, agreed on a price a tad lower than what he called and that was it.

    • @charlesgru8978

THat's the trick I've learned....when talking numbers, I specifically say "Out the door", and get that in writing before I talk to the finance person. Only once have they tried to add stuff in the finance office. I just pointed at the words "out the door", he just sighed & said "OK"

I am honestly sick of dealing with their shit. Playing the 4 squares game and trying to ram their garbage financing down my throat, charging WAY over MSRP, attitude from most of the staff. Bring back the Mom and Pop dealers, and get rid of the Harley mega malls. I am honestly thinking Indian or just jumping over to an ADV/Sport tourer.

Speaking from experience, don't waste your time with indian. Polaris really needs to stay in their lane with atv stuff. Had a pursuit for 2 days before I got a full refund. Bike died on ke 3 times in 2 hours while cornering on the first ride I took it out on. Also, they have very few dealerships so the support network is lacking. I would look for a better dealer if at all possible. Hope this helps.

I’m in KY. I won’t put the dealer on blast…they changed hands a couple years ago so I should, but anywho, I walked in found the bike I wanted. Stood by it waiting. Salesman came up to me, looked me in the eyes and said if you don’t have 10% down I can’t help you, turned and walked away!!! Pissed…yeah that’s not even close to how mad I got. Left that dealership and went straight to Sevierville TN to Smoky mountain Harley Davidson and picked up my bike. Screw a bunch of nonsense!! Know your product 1st. Wanted no frills road glide and all of the sudden I had pre approval for 24k and was going to pay my own TTL we made the deal on the bike I get back in the finance room to do paperwork and all of the sudden at the end they say the bike is 31k. I was in the market for a boat a few years back. Some dealer brought a bunch down for a “show” in town and they had one that was pretty much what I was looking for. I brought a friend over to check the boat out with me. I started talking to the guy about the boat and finally got around to “how much”. He said 18,500. I wasn’t willing to go over 12,000 so I told him to have a nice day and went home. Came time to haul the boats back up north and I get a phone call. The guy says if you make it 12,500 you can have the boat. Done deal! So yeah, the next one to speak loses!

Bout a month ago I backed out of a used sportster deal cause of something similar. 2016 around 6k miles dealership had it listed for 6995$ online. So I go in and by the time they do their numbers a seven thousand dollar used sportster was now 12,000$. They had a 955$ assembly fee, a 700$ tire fee, a 2,500$ warranty fee, a 600$ theft fee, and a couple more fees im forgetting what they were. I have a picture of the sales paper on my phone. But it was just bat shit insane to me. That was up at Texas HD on hwy 183. I told the sales manager "your literally trying to sell me a bike that books average retail 6500 for 12,000 dollars." They seemed ok with it and wouldnt budge so I went elsewhere. Ive bought new Kawasaki in the past and while they had BS fees too, it didnt Double the price of the bike. The whole thing just blew my mind honestly.

Harley could triple their sales if their dealers would stop doing this kind of crap.
High Octane Harley in MA is LEGENDARY at this kind of crap.
Most places Ive been to wont even tell you the price of the bike. When I went to buy my RG Standard it took HO Harley an hour to give me a price. When they did, they wanted 28K OTD. This was 2 years ago when they couldnt give away bikes. I walked out.
If they dont have a tag on their bikes, Im walking out.

I paid cash for my 1978 KZ1000. Everyone should pay cash for a new vehicle once in their life. I had a cashier's check for the listed price made out to the dealer in my pocket. After all the haggling with the floor guy, I asked to see the owner. Showed them the cashier's check. I then asked them if I should go back to the bank and change the name on the payee line. This is exactly why I love Harley bikes but really can’t stand Harley as a company. I bought a $200 vest with my new bike and the stitching was coming apart less than a year later. I live in WA, you don’t use a vest much. Plus they quoted me $630 for an oil change! Needless to say I did it myself (for $123 in supplies) and will continue to do my own. Doing fork oil or tranny stuff kinda freaks me out though. I did adjust my own clutch at the primary though.

Totally agree with you I have bought more than 15 bikes from a local dealer over the years and it seems like everything i go to get a bike I'm treated as if its my first Harley. The worst thing is the used car salesmen they hire to be sales managers. Its so bad I have bought several bikes from other dealerships but this particular dealership in North Texas is just so close to my house I guess its just a convenience thing but you are so right. Depends on the dealer. There are so many H-D dealers that it's easy to try several. Different business models.

totally agree about the lame o bs dealer fees nonsense. Especially on used bikes and they aren't in pristine condition at the rate of 500.00+ prep fee junk. I know when I bought my bike I told them I'll take it for about 500 bucks under their asking price due to just that whole "prep/title/doc" fees. They went for it because they wanted the bike gone out of the door because it was sitting for a bit i found out. Now when i go to look i actually look at all the extra fees and nonsense and then if they seem a bit rediciulous then i'm simply not interested period just like I do when shopping for a car/truck anymore. I worked for a car dealership for about a year and after that I seen all the nonsense and how dealerships make a killing over their "fees" a lot of times.

you want story's and i will name them Seacoast Harley, part of the New England Group (full disclosure i am an MVP member of one of their other stores and a HOG member , and i have purchased 3 bikes from this Group) Wife and i were looking for a touring bike, and Seacoast had a beautiful FLHTCUI in Pearl White, Again i worked dealers for almost 40 years i know the game, i also have an over 800 credit score, and a pre-approval from my bank at a very good rate, all i needed was a number to call the bank and have a bank check drawn. we were there over an hour and a half and still no number, just a lot of run around, then a sales manager pulled our salesman and gave him to another customer, and again another 45 min went by and things between myself and the sales manager started to get heated, they did not want to sell this cherry low mileage bike for a cash price, and they didn't cause i left, when down the road and bought a different bike, and i have not purchased a thing at seacoast hd since

Tried to buy a 2008 anniversary dyna that needed to be detailed and prettied up in the same way with some rust spots and that fun stuff. 20k plus miles but was relatively clean. Needed tires and brakes. I went around the bike, made a list of dings and dents and scratches, basically every imperfection and the time and money needed to rectify them. They had this bike at 10,500 sticker. I talked with the guy and told him due to everything I'm at $8500. He looked at me and I swear in my life said "well looks like you ain't buying a bike today" u said looks like you'll never get a sale.

Dude.....2200 - 2500 in dealer add-on fee's at every dealer within 200 miles of me....its INSANE!!! I cant even bring myself to LOOK at a bike at an HD dealer because of the fee's. I went in to buy a used 4 year old triumph at my Harley dealer that was 12k, which was a bit high but I decided I would bite the bullet since it was local....and by the time I was getting it out the door it was 15k which was about what I could get a BRAND NEW one at a triumph dealer for but would need to travel a ways to get it. I mentioned this on our local rider group, and the sales guy was actually in the group and called me out....saying I was lying, but he didnt realize that I had taken a picture of the paperwork and posted it to the page since he wanted to lie.......they are HORRENDOUS. Paying 600-800 dealer prep on a used bike is BS, paying 600-800 dollars for an "admin fee" is simply insane, you are a bike dealer, thats the cost of doing business.... It turned me so sour that the last time I bought a new bike I drove 400 miles to buy the same bike that my local dealer had on the floor and I saved 7 GRAND due to a dealer markup and dealer fee's....it was a 2021 RG snake venom and my local dealer wanted a 5 grand dealer markup for the color, plus the 2200 or so in fee's....I LITERALLY walked outside, into the parking lot, searched the web for the same exact bike and found one 400 miles away, called the dealer and worked the deal over the phone and bought it from my dealers parking lot and my wife and I drove out the next day and picked the thing up. Now anyone who asks where the best place to buy a bike is I tell them that story....and a LOT of people end up asking me that exact question......BTW looked at teh Dyna LRS at your dealer...looks SWEET!!! Wish I was closer....

Looking forward to this build. I have a '10 Superglide Custom (Black with forward controls) that I rarely ride since getting my '17 Road Glide Special. When I do ride it, I miss the fairing and the stereo. Seen the Shorts that Advanblack has put out on here with this new ST fairing and have been curious if it would fit my Dyna. Hard bags to replace the leather ones I currently have, as well as 14" bars instead of the 10" with 2" risers I currently have on it and floorboards could be the ticket for me. BTW, the Superglide Special also has the tank mounted Speedo versus one on the handle bars.

I responded so what about Cape, and several other cities/towns? No response. I said ya bye. Never went there again. He was trying to a used impala with 90k on it that got about the same mileage as the little truck I already had but only 50k on it. I forget the years of both. I know not everyone does it but before I got to buy something I research the hell out of it lol. Good vid

The desire to try to rip people off and the comfort with doing so is just disappointing and ridiculous. We have one Harley dealer in my area that plays it straight, everyone else plays these games unfortunately. So, I have committed myself to working with them moving forward.
I learned to do so when buying my latest bike. I ended up having to play two of them against one another to get a decent price when buying my Sporster S because both of them were trying to charge me $2-4k over MSRP. I found the same bike (2022) on one of their websites with less than 300 miles for significantly UNDER MSRP. After negotiating about the price for hours, I finally told the shop I was at that I was leaving to go look at getting that one. I wasn’t really nice about it either lol. They called me within an hour and said they could match that price on a 2023 with 50 miles on it and that bike is now sitting in my garage. I hate that the process has to be like that. Every other bike brand I have looked at or owned, the price you see online is the price of the bike. Fees etc are typically a lot more reasonable too. It’s such a waste of time.

Living in the UK I am often surprised by the practices of some US dealerships. With us the price on the bike is the price you pay tax pdi included you just need to get insurance and road tax $100 per year . The negotiation is about your trade in or the price of the bike if you are paying cash. I have seen a lot of UA-cam posts about people who have had bad experiences with dealerships adding surcharges and bikes being $6k over msrp etc . How is screwing the customer good for business?

After the Butt Railing I took in dealer fees when I bought my 21 RG I make sure to show up at Alligator Alley and eat every Goddam free hot dog and every free beer I can get to make up the expense, even thoughI bought the bike at the sister store in Palm Beach LOL. What pissed me off with the prep fees on a new bike is that on Harley's official website, it states they reimburse the dealership for the prep, so basically the dealers double dip. Pre-Deliver Inspection is required because if you leave that lot and there is a failure like brakes or something and you get injured or worse, HD is on the hook for liability.

I got to the dealer, my guy tells the manager that I am here to close my deal. The manager tells my guy that they have $14K in the bike, so they can't sell it for $10k.
After that, I got the typical dealer run-around. How much can you afford to put down today? Blah, Blah, Blah.

In my experience dealerships (car, bike, whatever) only care about making as much as they can on the deal. After that good luck with then or getting good results from their service/parts departments. It's not till you've become a repeat customer, buying again from them 2 or more times that they start giving good service, discounts, etc, but thats because they know you're a good source of income and want to keep the money coming in.

This is so true! So this year I ordered two bikes. The 120th Anniversary Electra Glide and the CVO Streetglde in Whiskey Neat. The reason for 2, is the dealer said order them both and when they come in make your decision on which one and they have buyers for both bikes. That was in early August. No communication from the dealer since then unless initiated by me. When I have called or visited the dealer in the past months, everything I ask about a ship date or where we are at in the process, I must remind them which 2 bikes I have ordered under my name. 3 weeks ago, I received a text from said dealer to come down and look at my CVO as it was in...I drove the hour drive down to the dealership only to find out what they had for me was a CVO Roadglide and SILVER! So I calmly taked to the sales manager and asked him...I have ordered just under 100,000 dollars worth of bikes from you and drove an hour for you to show me my new CVO and you don't even know what bikes I have ordered! Absolutely ridiculous!

Best to place to buy a Harley is not at an HD dealership. Go to a metric bike shop and look for a nice used one that was traded in. Most power sports stores are not into playing HD games and just want to move stock.
