      The problem, Steven, is these are just the very rounds that will be in very shortest supply, the quickest! Especially 5,56mm! The Military will ship out every possible box to wherever the firefight is, and not release a damned round to the public. What's on shop shelves will disappear within days! That's it! Look what happened to the supply of .22LR ammo recently - almost unobtainable, and it took months to restore some supply. [Anyone know how many .22LR guns are out there? I'd guess at least 10+ millions, probably more! ] It is very difficult to predict what will happen when SHTF strikes, and at what intensity. The current situation in Ukraine is a serious wake-up call that people should be watching. True, it's unlikely to happen on US soil, but think back to what the domestic situation was in WWII, and that might give some idea of what might occur.

      Yup. and his list overlaps with what I use and that's what everyone else uses. Only odd ball I didn't agree with was that creedmore. Its prefect if that's the gun he owns. Or I'd buy it if it was some sort of local fav otherwise that part of the hunting market is too diverse to even try as far as I know. My round for that is my 30.06. It ought to fill the gap plus its what I own plus it may have a slight edge on being popular if I had to guess.

      Excellent comment and highlights what's missing from most of these kinds of videos. Stockpile ammo for the gun you currently own and know how to use. DON'T buy a new gun just for its cartridge (unless there is a significant capability gap in the cartridges you currently have guns for). If you have a 45 or 40 you shouldn't be running out to get a 9, and if you have 7.62x39 you shouldn't be going after 5.56.

    I find it odd you chose the 6.5 over the 308. You’d have a hard time trying to find 6.5 creedmoor for less than $1.50 a round. You can find .308 for .60 a round. Most shooters won’t really get the benefits of 6.5 over 308 because they simply don’t shoot enough. Also way easier to barter with .308/7.62x51

      On board here 100%, I have my bolt gun, my grandfathers bolt, then a few semi's in 308. I'm holding tight to my 308 till I see a real advantage to switch over. But for now 308 does all my 100-800 yard duties just fine. and from Hogs to deer to some larger game it is a good middle ground for me. Everything else. Yep on board with that. :)

      How many folks own a 6.5 v .308? Barter and investment quality are supposed to be critical to the value index. While the 6.5 might have a slight edge over the 08 in certain aspects, there simply are probably a hundred to one or more 08 capable firearms between civil and military than 6.5.

      @@stephenwalton7079 let me clear up my thoughts of what I said. I'm an "old" shooter. I have plenty and have been shooting for a long time. 308 762 is an easy choice because I have zero equipment costs. I have been running 308 and 30-06 for hunting my whole life.
      For a new shooter looking to get into hunting and sport shooting I would consider 6.5 but it would still be a consideration and not 100% for sure. I would have to look into much more.

      That was my thought. Swap 308 for 6.5 creed. There are so many hunting rifles out there in 308, not to mention the M1A and the Hk91 and clones. I have a G3K, so I keep a good supply of 308.
      The other benefit of 308 is that there are cool bullets....the M2 and M61 AP, several varieties of good tracers and the M14API. I am lucky enough to have a couple hundred of those.

    I'm with you on 4 of the 5 choices. Can't say I'd ever think about "stockpiling" a 6.5 Creed. One of the primary reasons to "stockpile" is as an alternative form of currency. I submit that hardly anyone in a SHTF or WWROL scenario will be running around seeking to barter with or for 6.5. I'm thinking that the prevalence of the .308Win or 7.62x51 is likely a better choice.

    To answer the question: "How many rounds do I need?" one must project themselves into the future and answer a different question: "When I fire my last round, how many more will I wish I had gotten when they were cheap and plentiful?" We may think they are in short supply and expensive now, but when the stores are closed and shelves are bare, we will think back to the days of plenty.
    The .22 LR round may well become the new coin of the realm.

Besides firearms, there would be everything else a hunter or shooter might have: holsters, reloading equipment, and especially ammunition. There would be collections of ammo, maybe 15-30 partially or half full boxes of wide varieties of calibers in an single auction bidding lot. If at least half the ammo was in calibers I could use for firearms I owned, I would bid on it and buy it. You could get ammo cheaper than at the store, especially compared to now. I'd keep the ammo I could use for myself, and give the rest to friends or family who had guns in those calibers. I was able to get rid of most everything I couldn't use. The very, very few I couldn't I kept for trading and bartering in hard times.

    Here in France guns and ammo are very expensive and some calibers highly regulated (like 5,56mm or 9mm) so it's really hard to stockpile ammo like these.
    I however have a bunch of 12 gauge and .22LR because... that's the essential :)

      @WC3fanatic997 2 роки тому +6

      You can do 99% of things with just 12ga and .22
      All other calibers are fine and fulfill certain roles better, but those two, if there had to be only two, are probably the best overall. If you had a third then I'd wiggle 5.56 in there.

    • @BaieDesBaies
      @BaieDesBaies 2 роки тому +7

      @@WC3fanatic997 There will be a third but probably not 5.56 cause it's highly regulated.
      You have to be registered in a shooting club for at least 6 months, have the positive recommendation from the club president with controlled session of shooting at least every two months, then you can buy a gun in 5.56 at 2 times the prices of those in USA.
      But that's not all !
      You can only buy 2000 ammo a year in this caliber, and only if you own a gun in this caliber, and you cannot own more than 1000 ammo at once.
      And that's not all ! You have to renew your request of owning this gun every 5 years, and if you don't renew the registration in a shooting club every year you have to sell or destroy your weapon.
      Imagine how i could want to buy an AR15 in France lmao.

      Just an interesting bit of info on this subject. The gun store I work at has piles of .308. It’s easy to get, and lots of variety to choose from, and people rarely ask for it. It’s not nearly as popular as it once was. 6.5 creedmoor, on the other hand, is ALWAYS being asked for, and is much harder to get a hold of and keep in stock. So for an investment/trade/barter item, I would stock up on the 6.5 over the .308. As for which one I would want for an apocalyptic/SHTF scenario, yeah, the .308 for sure. Two different trains of thought there, for two different scenarios.

    "Long live the 300 Blackout!"
    However, I'm with Jonathan Wick, below, 6.5CM is a fantastic round, but it isn't a good hedge against the dollar or emergencies for the simple reason that it isn't as widely used or in as wide circulation as standard military ammo. Better bet is .308/7.62x51. After all the basics are taken care of, however, can't recommend 6.5 enough. It's a real zinger. Other than that, however, start looking at standard/common hunting rounds, like 30-06, 30-30, .270 Rem, 300WM, 7mm RM (massive uptick in popularity over the last couple decades), and 45-70 (will do work and there's a LOT of lever-actions out there for it)...but only get them if you've got firearms for them, UNLESS you've just got play money and have zero interest in gold/silver (can't recommend silver coins enough) or crypto. ;-)

      6.5CM has already fallen out of favor by most precision shooters because of the lower barrel life. The barrel life is why it is better to pick a 300 Win Mag over a 6.5 if you need flatter trajectory, especially since 308 actually outperforms 6.5 terminally at close range, so even if you have to resort to a bolt action, at longer ranges the loss of speed is compensated by the flatter trajectory leading to faster hits on target.

    The big thing I’ve thought with 22r is longevity over all, what I mean is if things really go from bad to worse and you have to sustain an ability to resist aggression. At the end of the day 22lr is not as effective, however there is a point where if someone has 10x the amount of ammo you do they can outlast others in sustained aggression. Think about it like this, if group A has 3,000 rounds of 556 they cannot sustain a fight as long as group B who has 30,000 rounds of 22lr. Even if those 30,000 are anemic, they can stop aggression and quantity can make you last longer than quality in some cases.

    7.62 NATO could be included. I like the .45 ACP as well. And yes, 12 gauge all the way. A .22 and a 12 gauge will probably do everything you will ever need in life. I prefer the .22 mag, but heh.
    If a man bought a .22, a 7.62 NATO/.308, and a 12 gauge shotgun, they would handle virtually 100% of everything he needed in life in the lower 48 states. IMO.
    Pistols, well- 9mm or .45 ACP are hard to beat. 6.5 Creedmore? I would pick the 7.62 NATO or .45 ACP over that as a barter item, though your location may dictate selection!

    • @JohnnyReb2000
      @JohnnyReb2000 2 роки тому +3

      I concur with pistol caliber. 9mm and .45 ACP both have their pros and cons, but are both good options, so for the most part, which one you choose comes down to personal preference. 9mm definitely has an edge in supply since it's become the standard cartridge for most military/police forces, but the .45 ACP is still common enough to be relevant in a barter situation. 7.62 Nato is definitely a good rifle option and very common, but I would argue .30-06, despite the lack of advantage in ballistics, is a more versatile caliber in terms of the types of game you can take. The bullet weight ranges from around 110 grains for small game to 220 grains for the largest game in North America. As you said though, your location plays a huge role in your decision. As long as you have at least ammo for a .22, a pistol, an intermediate rifle, a large rifle, and a shotgun, you should be in good shape.

Also, it's very likely you own a gun in several of those calibers, if not all five. You can argue that different cartriges have better ballistics, or are better suited to a certain purpose, sure. But the ammunition and gun you have is better than the one you don't, and these are easy and cheap to stockpile large quantities of, and in very common use. I'm on point with the choices here, except for the 6.5 creedmoor. I do understand why someone would go with that cartridge over .308, but my personal choice is .308.
