  • Blue elderberries are an emerging crop in California. More and more farmers and land stewards are including it in hedgerow plantings as a way of increasing biodiversity on agricultural landscapes. Given the strong interest in using elderberry in value-added products like syrups, jellies, tinctures and teas, it is important that harvesters and processors understand how to minimize food-borne risks in the harvesting and processing of this crop.
This video series will show viewers the what, when, and how of safely harvesting elderberries and food safety considerations from before you harvest to immediately after harvest. This video is the first in a series of four, and focuses on post-harvest best practices for food safety.
Presented by the UC Agriculture and Natural Resources Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Program (SAREP) and UC Davis Food Science and Technology.
