  • A visit to the rue Cler in Paris, a pedestrian market street in the Seventh district of Paris that is famous mainly because of Rick Steves, an American travel writer who sings its praises in his travel guides.
There are many market streets in Paris, including streets far more interesting than this one, but this one gets the most press, so I've made a short video about it.
For a look at a market street in Paris that makes the rue Cler look comatose, see this video

Been here four times and it serves as such a nice base location for being in Paris. Quiet, has everything, and if you want to spend a half day in to rest (as one should when travelling) you'll not be disturbed.

i found many ethnicities in the 20th district (in the east side of paris). it is a wonderful mix of chinese, north african, french, american, german, middle eastern, and everyone seemed to get along. much better than the USA. no one was out-right hateful like we see in the US. everyone just wanted to make a living. i felt this all thru paris, but b/c i focused on the areas away from the tourist, i noticed it most in the 20th (and the 19th and in the west in the 15th). wonderful.

Je connais très bien cette rue, où j'allais faire mes courses quand j'habitais ce quartier. Bien vu.
    Ca n'a quasiment pas changé.
    Cette vidéo m'a fait plaisir.

Lovely video of regular, everyday scenes from Paris. I feel like I'm actually there. This video does a great job of capturing the ambience. But I especially fell in love with the romantic opening instrumental.

I just got back from my birthday trip to Paris on October 4 and I noticed a comment about someone mentioning that they thought the prices would be more expensive
The prices are not really as expensive as people will tell you
You can spend a lot of money but you don’t have to
It’s very common to still get a plate lunch for eight and nine euros which is not that different then you would get back here in the states

    Love It!
This is where we stayed for our last trip in Paris! Its just teeming with Parisian life, from the morning with the shops opening and deliveries coming in, to the lively nightlife!
Try getting footage of Rue Cler Sunday morning.. with the local folks having late brunch with the backdrop of French street musicians.. absolutely awesome!
    Thank you for this video!

You make excellent videos. I've been watching them at least twice - once without the closed captioning to just experience the sights and sounds, and then a second time with the closed captioning to learn a bit more about the locations. Thanks for posting these.

Thanks. I don't like to force narration on people or interfere with the natural sound, so I give them a choice. I don't even put music on videos any more, for the same reason.

The rue Cler owes its fame entirely to travel author Rick Steves, who praises it endlessly in his books and videos. Apparently Rick has never seen the rest of Paris and doesn't realize that this street is only one of hundreds of similar market streets in the city-and it's not even the most interesting one. Nowadays, the street has "adapted" to the constant presence of American tourists, and not always in a good way.

I love how you leave all the real sounds. Even though Paris can be very noisy, that noise is part of the real Paris. It's true that some people put on some music but unfortunately some of the actual Paris can be lost with music. Anyway I much prefer your kind of videos. Keep posting, please.

The rue Cler owes 100% of its fame to American travel author Rick Steves, who praises the street in his books as if it were the most marvelous place in Paris. Obviously, Rick Steves doesn't know Paris very well. As you say, there's nothing remarkable about the street, and there are many other Parisian streets that are more interesting.Today you mostly see American tourists on the rue Cler, with Rick Steves' books in their hands.

Paris is one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the world. You can find people of every conceivable nationality here. It attracts many immigrants and it's also a city with many corporate headquarters, embassies, and international organizations, so there are people from everywhere in the city.

Thanks! Due to popular demand (and the cost of licensing), I'm not even putting any music at all videos these days, but this was an earlier video. You can tell from the street noise why a lot of video producers cover things up with music completely … Paris is a very noisy place! (And the rue Cler is quiet by Paris standards!) In real life, just about every other shot in a Paris video has a police siren or roaring motorocycle sounds drowning everything else out.

After living and working in Paris from time to time, I found Rue Cler very refreshing away from the tourists. The locals all retreat for 20 mins when a tourist bus arrives. advice to any one visiting Paris don't go with a tourist group, walk everywhere have a coffee with the locals and listen. If you want transport use the Seine.

Perhaps in France it is not much but in the US it is terribly important. No chemicals to poison you.

This is one of the few videos in which I've put any music at all. It's costly to license and most viewers seem to prefer just the ambient noise of Paris, so I haven't used any music in a long time.
