It's the vibration of the machine that brings the worms up out of the dirt.

Worms will come up to the surface in response to vibration. If you stand a knotty stick into the soil and rub another stick up and down, the worms will surface. Look at seagulls on a lawn and you'll often see them dancing on the grass - actually stamping their webbed feet to attract them up. Perhaps the worms think it is heavy rain...

The reason they come to the surface is because the vibrations warn them of an impending thunderstorm and they come up to avoid drowning . A trick I often used as a child to get fishing bait!

Are you aware of the fact that some sweet cherries are self-pollinating but most are not? In that case you would need a plant of the sour cherry ( _Prunus cerasus_ ) in the vicinity of the sweet cherry to get fruit. The 'kriek' (well known in Belgium; in the Netherlands we call them 'morel') is a sour cherry that you can use for that. Sour cherries (the fruit) are very good for making jam, so it's not wrong to have one.

Happy Holidays to you both, your son and daughter. Of course the cats, the cows. You have completed a lot of work since you first bought the vacant farm. Though the work has been endless, I can see Dehoeve coming back to life. Remembering the overgrown land, now the beginnings of a bountiful harvest, peaceful gardens, orchard, many, many afternoons surrounded by family and friends. Oh yes, there will be time to taste beer also. Greetings from Oregon, USA, a Sante!

I hope that your approach works for the trees. Everything that I have read, and what I have done successfully many times, is to make the hole as deep as the root ball and twice as wide. Do NOT put organic matter underneath the root ball as it can leave voids as it decomposes, causing the roots to dry out and die. The roots always want good contact with soil. You asked"why not?". That's why. Other than that, every week you continue to impress me with all your accomplishments and growing skills.

Nice work! A couple of planting tips. As the garden waste to your hole decomposes it will take nitrogen from the soil, so in the future you may want to use a slow release fertilizer like Osmocote in the bottom of the hole to offset that. Also when planting in a heavy clay soil plant the trees a bit higher so the plants do not drown as water tends to run into the uncompacted holes - especially with the garden waste creating an air pocket. If you see your trees struggling you might want to raise them a bit. Finally mulch around the trees to keep the weeds down. Looking forward to seeing the fruit!

The reason why the worms are called rain worms is because the rain makes vibrational sounds and they come up because otherwise they would drown in their earth homes. Blackbirds often use this effect by trip or scutteling (sorry if these words are incorrect) on the ground so the rain worms move in the ground and they can find or sense them. Maybe your vehicle caused this kind of vibration :))

So handy to have the digger. Perhaps the worms feel the vibrations of it. If you are hoping for birds to come, you may have to put a collar on your cat/s with tiny bells on them. Gives the birds a margin of safety. Cats are so clever and sneaky when it comes to the chase. That or high bird feeders on top of poles. It's good to get those odds jobs done too. Especially the trees and bulbs. They will be growing while you work.

I think it's very well thought out that you first created the basic conditions for the house itself and then that you can live well there on the building site and only then take care of the interior work. 😊The path, the fruit trees and the flower and vegetable beds are a lovely idea. And it's good that you're still taking care of the one roof, as it's supposed to get very stormy in the next few days (at least for me on the north-west German North Sea coast, but I think you'll get a good bit of wind too).
I wish you and your family (hopefully everyone is safe and well) a Merry Christmas and lots of health, happiness and lots of energy in the New Year!

You are smart to establish your garden while you are renovating. Once you move into the big house, it will be mature.
    I love the layout.
Are you planning to plant a hedge around the garden, to provide a wind barrier for the vegetables?
Your path through the garden looks a bit narrow. It’s hard to tell online. Make sure you test run your wheelbarrow along it to see if it fits and can turn around corners. You’ll need it in the future to bring compost to the vegetable beds.

Worms think that it's raining outside because of vibration and leave their tunnels. We used to dig out worms for fishing this way: put a shovel into the ground and knock on it and five minutes later gather them. Probably not the fastest way but if the soil is too compacted it could be easier then digging. Also this feature is used by seagulls: they stamp the ground to get some worms

They too need privacy--a kind you parents are willing to sacrifice a little in order to share your lives with us. But I am pleased whenever I see (at a distance) that your daughter is helping. This is a family activity. But I rarely see your son helping. I am not being critical. I just know that my father and mother remodeled our home when I was 12 years old, and then our father converted a railway passenger coach into a small duplex; and it was a great delight for me and my younger brother to help with those projects. Working alongside our dad is one of the greatest memories I have of our family, and I hope that your children will have that same joy. God bless your family this Christmas season.

Feliz Navidad y Año Nuevo a tan trabajadora y agradable Familia Ucraniana.

Saludos.

15:30 : for the path I can highly recommend using either woodchips or barkchips.
Best is to dig a very shallow trench - few centimeters - and then fill it with chips.
Very nice to walk on, and great advantage is the path will never get slippery regardless the weather.
It's natural so will decompose very slowly.
Don't buy from the garden shop but contact a firm that does tree management.

Make sure to get the moss of your carport roof a d it will last longer.
There is a spray that you can apply, that prevents the moss from growing back.

What an exciting growing season you can look forward to in the coming spring. Those bulbs you planted along the garden path will be magnificent, and each year they will increase in number until you have an absolute carpet of lovely flowers.Spring on many of the the farms in NewZealand has a literal field of daffodils spreading out from the handful of bulbs the farmer’s wife had planted many many years ago.your fruit trees too will be a delight. You have so very much to do ,it is easy to see while many children in a family could be seen as good thing when they would become very helpful as they grew. Now there are tractors and clever machinery to help, but still it is a busy life.Thank you for your inspiring video.

Hello. Love the work and progress on your property and homes. Growing tip, stake a copper rods/pipes into soil in area for growth enhancement. Just learned of this tip recently, will be using in spring. Best wishes

You have become our favorite UA-cam family to follow. You garden path will be beautiful when the flowers bloom. It's well planned. Is your cat going blind, either from fights or age? She seems disoriented. Hope it's nothing at all. Happy Holidays. Still love the big light on your corner tree. 👍👍👍

I live in Maine, the pine tree state, so the idea of planting pinecones is a little startling to me, lol. They grow like weeds around my summer place, and I’m always pulling them up by the roots! Still, your pines look like a different species, so good luck growing them to your satisfaction.😊 👍👍

I have enjoyed watching both of you this year. You have done a great job in repairing your old farm. I know that you are Ukrainian but I do not know if you are Orthodox or some other Christian faith so I will tell you both ways. You and your family have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and Have a Happy New Year and a Merry Christmas.
