Wow man... I don’t have any questions or anything, but I just wanted to point out that I noticed how helpful you’ve been to everyone in the comments of this video. You’ve given solid advice and had the most kind responses to every comment I’ve seen so far. Thanks for that, and great video by the way!
Cheers Caleb! Really appreciate you watching and taking take to provide this feedback. I do try my best to respond to all the folks who are kind enough to watch and provide feedback or ask questions. Have a great day!
I remember giving this video to a friend since he had an iPhone. At the time, I had a Samsung Galaxy phone and could not use this video. A few months later, I got my first iPhone and needed this video as well. Haha. You did a great job of explaining everything! 😊
Nice one! Glad it has now helped you and your friend.
With this tutorial I now have hundreds of more sounds on my Yamaha Digital piano. Thanks for tutorial man you’re a pure legend🙌🏼
Very welcome my friend. Thanks for your kind words.
Hello sir, need your help. I tried very much. But can’t solve the problem. I have iPhone 11 and Casio 860in keyboarde. But Can’t connects with midi😣 is some hide settings in GarageBand?
Nothing in GarageBand. Might be a setting to enable MIDI sending on your keyboard.
I used to connect using irig2 but the qulality was not to expected level. This seems a better option. Thanks a lot 🙏
Yep - I'll occasionally go analog using my Steinberg UR12, but the benefits of getting MIDI data in there is that you then have complete flexibility over instrument choie, and can easily edit the performance.

Thank you for posting this. I was struggling with this simple stuff😂 I really appreciate it
yo pete, I have a roland FA08 and wanna connect it to my macbook and use garageband. I think I need a USB A to B cable? It's a bit confusing as FA has a USB A socket on back with "for updates" above and another USB B socket with "computer" above it. bit confusing...! great vids!

Pete, this is working very well for me. Thank you. If I want to add audio interface, will it improve the quality? Or just waste of rrsources. Thanks
Thanks mate, good stuff. Best wishes and keep it up!
Cheers my friend. 🙏
Pete loving your vids man keep it up new subscriber aswell👍
Nice one. Thanks for the kind words
I knew this worked! Office works and Planet music said this wouldn’t work with an iPad.. ended up selling me a jack lead with a head phone jack connector which made no sense to me at all of how it could of possible have worked as they both send not receive... wasting $27 of my money... 3 months later and still annoyed, but huge thanx to your video, helping me prove a point 🤙🏼
Hey Jake. Yes, I kept being told this wasn't possible which is why I just tried it for myself and wanted to share that it is possible. The reason that salespeople tell you it won't work is that the iPad can't power a lot of USB powered devices (that aren't separately powered like my piano here), but as long as the device isn't drawing a lot of power from USB, the actual connection works perfectly. I've also tried some of the cheaper $2-3 cables on eBay which work quite well (they can drop out randomly sometimes) - check out my video on these here: ua-cam.com/video/8-NAyOrrS4w/v-deo.html
Very helpful video, thanks!

Thank you so much, I am planning on making music on my keyboard (Yamaha) instead of using touch screen all the time. Subbed! God Bless. very helpful :D

Hey Pete, loved the video tutorial. What if my piano doesn’t have a midi plug available? I have one of those old electric pianos that requires a different In/Out plug. I have the cables for it (where i can plug it in from my keyboard to my windows laptop).
I haven’t been able to send data to my laptop with the recording of my laptop, not sure why. I was using Audacity to try and record it, but that wasn’t working.
So I tried GarageBand. The data doesn’t send wirelessly, so not sure what I can do in this situation. Any tips? Also i have iPhone 6S

Thanks. I got one of those connectors on ebay for about $6 from China. It works great. I have a 2nd gen iPad with the 30 pin connector.
Nice one! Yes, you can get lucky with some of the cheaper versions, like I did with a $10 guitar interface recently. I have two of the cheap lightning to USB cables and hey are still working, though not convinced they will last a really long time.
Thank you very much , I appreciate you a lot 🙏😊
Thanks for your support my friend. 👍
Hi Pete, great vid and such an excellent response from you to all the questions.
I was hoping you can answer a question for me please. I have a Yamaha P125 digital piano, that I am hooking up to my Mac to use as a midi controller, when i play the P125 it emits the local piano sound as well as the selected instrument on garage band, even when I try to turn off the local sound to the piano (holding down metronome and rhythm while selecting C5)I was hoping you know how to stop the local sound from the piano so it just plays the garageband instrument. If not it's cool!! Thanks for all the information!! ✌
Hey there. So, I actually use a low tech solution for this, which is turn to turn the volume of the keyboard. Then you’ll just hear the sound of the virtual instrument you are triggering. I might be missing something here though and you’re looking for different solution, but that’s what I use.
Good Video very thorough!!!
Thank you! Appreciate you taking the time to comment.
Thank you! Appreciate your feedback and your taking the time to comment.
Well explained, just one thing, is there any way to record the original sound from our piano to Garageband with the MIDI feature ? thanks in advance!
Hi there. No, unfortunately this needs an audio interface as you are sending an audio signal and not MIDI data. This video should help. ua-cam.com/video/KxNC6MZ_rvo/v-deo.html

Hi! I have a Yamaha P-105 and an iPhone6s, do you know if have to buy the “lightning to usb adaptor “or the “lightning to usb 3” fo it to work? I notice that the second one has an extra lightning output for power supply, but I’m not sure if both work the same
For MIDI, either will generally work, but some devices need additional power so the USB 3 version is generally preferable - ua-cam.com/video/N1gHwJlap2s/v-deo.html
Exactly the video i needed to see🎆🎆🎆😎😎😎
Awesome! Great to hear. Here’s an updated video about the new version of this cable that you might want to check out - ua-cam.com/video/y2BomJoJwXU/v-deo.html
Thx for your help. Do you know how to play the original piano sound and not the piano form the garage band app ? For example if I choose piano & strings from my keyboard it wil play only piano in the app.
This is how to do this - ua-cam.com/video/Dbz8sxuy5X0/v-deo.html
Thankyou bro, your so smart
You’re very welcome my friend. I hope you get value from the other videos here on the channel and consider subscribing. 👍
Tysm, I can’t get the timing right on my iPad because GarageBand slightly lags so when I press a key the sound comes a little later, I’m gonna try this instead, Tysm :)

This one did it!
Excellent! 👍
Excellent. Please, Can I get the sound to come out of my keyboard speakers?
You’d need to route audio back from your iPad/iPhone to a mine input on your keyboard. studiolivetoday.com/gear
Hey Pete, I purchased the chords to connect my keyboard to my iPad and it’s worked great. I was wondering if there is anyway to get the sounds from my keyboard (for example saxophone) and put them on garage band. I saw another video of urs for individual add on sounds I could use but I love the variety and sound quality of the options on my keyboard. If there isn’t a way for this to be done is there a software that you know of that I can either download as an app or just use on my computer that has more variety and better sound quality than GB? Thanks and sorry for the long comment! Appreciate ur work!
Hey there. Yup, you can but you will need an audio interface to get this done as I show in this video - ua-cam.com/video/Dbz8sxuy5X0/v-deo.html
You’re great !thanks
Thanks to you for watching and taking the time to comment. 👍
Hi, thanks for the video. Will this work in a Yamaha Arius ydp-135? it has a midi to USB connector and it needs drivers to work. Thank you in advanced.
Hi there. If it requires drivers then it is unlikely to be class compliant and therefore may not work. Does it have 5-pin DIN connectors for MIDI? If so, you might be able to use an adapter like the one I demonstrate in this video.
ua-cam.com/video/l-g5UEsn6Ws/v-deo.html
Trying to find out what you do when you don't have a mic out as in on all new later model iphones? I have a Casio PX-S1000 and cant use blue tooth headphones as there is a delay. Can you play somehow with just the one lightning cable (then plugs into keyboard USB) and hear the sound on the keyboard? Right now it just plays the normal piano, but on my phone in Garageband plays the selected sound. Hope that makes sense?
Hey there. You can use a USB audio card/hub like the one I show in this video to monitor on newer iPhones. ua-cam.com/video/wpu9EOTyur4/v-deo.html
Thank you for the video, and how would you connect it to the newest Apple laptop?
Hey there. All you need for a MacBook is to plug in via USB directly, or a USB-A to C cable if connecting to USB-C.
thank u!!❤️❤️

Hi Pete great video! I just have a question because I can’t connect my Casio ap 260 to my iPad GarageBand what should I do?
You might need to look up the manual and make sure that MIDI is enabled. If it’s an older keyboard, try this - ua-cam.com/video/l-g5UEsn6Ws/v-deo.html
Hi there Pete,

hey, I'm looking for a way to plug a midi keyboard in to my phone so i can practice with headphones whilst traveling. do you think that would work ?
Hi There. Yes, you can plug any midi keyboard in and then use Garage Band and the Piano intrument with monitoring on to hear your playing. The only thing to consider is that the iPhone/iPad doesn't have enough power to supply power to the keybaord, so you need a keyboard that can plug in to an AC power socket, or use an external battery.
Another great video, Pete, thank you so much! I've been doing that with my USB piano, but one thing I would like to do now is to record its actual sound, instead of using it as a controller to play with the (great) sounds in Garageband and other apps. Would you have any suggestions on how I could do that? Thanks once more, have a great week!
Thanks Rodrigo. Yes, I have another video where I actually connect the analog output of my piano and record it’s sound, using the onboard mic and two different interfaces. Having a decent quality audio interface helps out but is not essential.
Take a look here - 3 x Ways to Record Analog Instruments (Piano, Keyboard, Synth) in GarageBand on iOS (iPhone/iPad) ua-cam.com/video/KxNC6MZ_rvo/v-deo.html
Not an expert but I used an iRig2 for that but it dosnt work for Yousician, but it recorded sound I think from Garageband.
I’ve got 3 different midi keyboards from 25 to 61 keys. For people who haven’t the money for an expensive keyboard and original Apple adapter, there is a nice and affordable solution: the IK MultiMedia iRig Keys 25 Mini. It includes a white keyboard with controls, free software such as SampleTank 2 and iGrand for iOS and it has 3 different cables in the package, normal usb for pc, otg for Android and a usb Micro To Lightning cable for iPhone and iPad. It’s class compliant so you don’t need an external power source. It draws little current from your iPhone or iPad. The price is under $100.
Excellent advice Emiel. Thanks as always for your feedback and contribution. 👍
Pete Johns No problem, Pete. I always try to do good things for other people. We are here to help one and each other so therefore you’re welcome 😇
Mr EPiphany here great video Pete very helpful...
Hey there! Great to see you over here. Hope this helps with your iPad purchasing decision!
Hi, I'm just trying to apply the exactly same thing with my roland vdrums (td11) in order to play and record in my ipad, but it's not working, can you please help me?
Hi there. Are you using the genuine Apple Lightning to USB 3 adapter? ua-cam.com/video/qt6ZczdUdV4/v-deo.html
Hi, I have a question, I have the cables just like yours but when I play the keyboard, the sound comes from my keyboard instead instead of from the garage band and it doesn’t pick up and recordings at all. Does it only work on digital piano only? Because mine is just a simple keyboard from Yamaha (model NP-12)
Hey there my friend. I’m not familiar with that particular keyboard so not sure of it supports USB MIDI and is class compliant (meaning it doesn’t need a driver to operate).
You might need to read through the manual or search online to see if it supports MIDI and will allow you to do something like this.
Hi Pete. I have a very old Yamaha piano (the PSR - 175.) I bought a midi cable which has a midi in and midi out on one side, the a USB on the other side of the cable. If I plug this USB into the lightning to USB port you're using, will it work on GarageBand on my IPhone 7?
Hi There. It may work but hard to say for sure. Have you used the piano with a PC? If it plugged in and didn't require a seperate driver for the MIDI to USB interface, then there's a good chance it will work. If you needed to load a seperate driver, then it likely won't be supported by GarageBand.
I have an older Casio keyboard with MIDI and use an Edirol USB to MIDI interface which requires its own drivers for a PC, and therefore doesn't work natively in GarageBand on iOS.
Suggest buying a cheap version of the cable and testing it out if you can.
Thankfully it was on a cheap £6 I spent and it's delivery is late! Hopefully it will work, I'll try it with my PC. Thanks for the response and advice! Keep up the great videos :)
Jim Bob Chief Hi. I have yamaha ydp140 and it needs a driver to pc. I'm curios about yours?? Is it working with garagabend?
Thanks for the help Pete. I got all the connections and hooked my iPad up to my Yamaha digital piano. It does not work. Where can I go to troubleshoot this? I have purchased all the equipment you have suggested. Do you have a video that goes deeper on this subject?

Hi do you know if there is a splitter adapter that allows for using a keyboard or interface like a focusrite itrack while simultaneously charging it?
Hey there. I haven’t come across a way to split or use two Lightning devices at once, but the Belkin Rockstar allows you to charge via Lightning while using a lightning device if you get the two lightning port version.
Nice video

Hey Pete, amazing video and thanks so much for the idea. I just got my cord and I was wondering if I can get the sound from my phone to be a little louder by using a speaker or even my keyboard
Hey there. Yes, depending what you’re using to output your sound you can definitely send this to an external speaker.

Hello there and thanks for the video! I have the exact same piano as yours but when I try to connect my connection kit, I can only hear the garageband sound through my earphones. Without it, there is no sound. Any reason why? Do I have to buy the connection kit that only has a usb rather than the one with usb and earphone jack? Please let me know and thanks.
Hey there. That’s strange? Maybe check out some of the other videos about MIDI keys here on the channel. ua-cam.com/video/W4MFXbxtPMg/v-deo.html
So I have an older Yamaha DGX-505 Portable Grand end it has over 400 sounds and effects on it. I know you were showing jhow you could connect to the keyboard to the sounds within the garageband app, but is there any way or setting to output the instruments already equipped on my keyboard?
Yup. I show how in this video.
ua-cam.com/video/Dbz8sxuy5X0/v-deo.html
You’re the man! Thanks for the speedy reply
Does this same trick work with the later iPhones that remove the headphone jack? I just tried it on my 13 and all it’s doing is filtering the phone’s audio through my keyboard’s speakers instead of using my keyboard as a controller.
Yes, you’ll just need to ensure you plug headphones in to your audio interface directly.
thank you so much this really helped I have a question the app has a lot more sounds than my piano but can I use those sounds on my piano what I mean is can I play the sound through the speaker of my piano without hearing the original Piano sound I have a Yamaha clp 635 piano thanks already
Hey there. There are other apps that can do this but GarageBand doesn’t have the ability of o send MIDI data.
@@PeteJohnsMusic ok thank you do you maybe know a different app that can do that?
Nice! Thank you so much for this vídeo! I have a question: How can i recording this audio with vídeo by the iPhone's camera?
You’ll generally need to use a second device to do something like this I’m afraid, and then edit the audio and video together.
@@PeteJohnsMusic hum, I got it! thanks!
Hello will the same Apple usb adaptor work for a iPhone 12, it says it’s compatible just wanted to make sure it would work with the midi thanks Pete!
Yup. As long as you pick up the genuine Apple Lightning to USB 3 adapter you’ll be fine - ua-cam.com/video/qt6ZczdUdV4/v-deo.html
Hi there, can I use a printer cable to connect my keyboard to the lightning USB adapter?
Hey there. Yes, most keyboards use USB-B which is what is commonly used for printers. This video might help you with this - ua-cam.com/video/N1gHwJlap2s/v-deo.html
Hi, this is a super cool tutorial! I'm facing a small issue though. When I touch and play the keys of the garage band instrument, I get a beautiful sound. But when I play the same keys on my digital piano(Yamaha P-45) after connecting, the sound coming from GarageBand seems dull and different. Any idea why that's happening?
Usually down to the velocity of the notes being sent. Does your MIDI controller have touch sensitive keys or any way to adjust this? You can manually adjust velocity after playing too. ua-cam.com/video/OB0uprKote4/v-deo.html
@@PeteJohnsMusic Oh okay, got it. Thanks!
Great video! Unfortunately with the new phones and their lack of a headphone jack, it can be hard to monitor audio while playing. Do you have any suggestions on how connect the sound to an external device with this limitation? I’ve tried Bluetooth speakers and headphones, but there is always a delay.
Yes it can be very challenging. Here’s a device that provides an option for this - ua-cam.com/video/wpu9EOTyur4/v-deo.html
Personally I use a powered USB hub and audio interface setup that works really well - ua-cam.com/video/Sc-_LiuqiRA/v-deo.html
Thank you so much! You’re always great with quick replies!
Airpods 😇
Can you take the audio and put in with a video? Example if I wanted to record something for instagram?
Hey there Stefan. Thanks for watching and for your question. What you can do is record keyboard (and any other audio tracks) in GarageBand and then export the song to iMovie to create a video with your own video or photo files.
Hi Pete, if I have a usb hub, a Casio LK-94TV keyboard, a usb a to b cable, and an off brand lightning to female lightning and usb, the off brand item would probably be the problem right? The problem is that the keyboard won’t actually play or record inside of GarageBand.
Yes, the aftermarket adapter cables are often unreliable. I always recommend the genuine Apple Lightning to USB 3 adapter- ua-cam.com/video/qt6ZczdUdV4/v-deo.html
Hello Pete. Quick question….can you also do the reverse of what you have shown here? Can I use a MIDI controller (Like a Roland PK-5A) to access sounds within the GarageBand library? Thanks! Pete
Hey there. You can trigger the sounds in GarageBand but can’t send these back to your keyboard unless you connect an audio interface and your keyboard has audio inputs.
@@PeteJohnsMusic Ok…this should work then…as I have a Steinberg UR22 mk II audio/MIDI interface. I should be able to go from my Roland PK-5A…to the UR22…then to my Mac…? I may need to play with drivers, and channels…but that should work…right?
What type of Celviano Piano is that you have in this video,.and do you like it?
It’s the AP-250. Not available anymore but the newer model is the 270 I believe? I have it listed on my gear guide here. studiolivetoday.com/gear
where should i connect external speaker so the volume will be louder? on the piano or my iphone?
was planning on buying piano soon
Depends. If you’re using a his sort of setup you’ll need to connect to your device’s output as you’re using GarageBand instruments.
