    I've been watching these comments for a long time and thought I would chime in. I started with Roland and love it. But it is a beast and the way the knobs stick out, etc., I felt it would not be an acceptable gigging piano, so I bought a CP4 with the thought of using that when I left the studio. Honestly, I love both of them and plan on keeping both of them. The Roland is unquestionably more customizable than the Yamaha, even to the extent that you can voice each note separately. I thought that sounded stupid, but there were a few notes that seemed to "ring" in different situations, and it was nice to be able to tweak the sound to make it work. The Roland seems to provide a wider dynamic range than the Yamaha as well... more dynamic response to the touch. IMO the Roland pads are far superior to the Yamaha's... fatter, richer, just nicer. All that said, I feel like the Yamaha really is more "piano-like" and more similar to the Kawaii acoustic grand I have in my great room. The Yamaha is also easier to quickly change eq or make other adjustments while on stage. The action of the two is different. I probably slightly prefer the Roland, but both are top of class... and I would be thrilled with either compared to the majority of grands I play in restaurants, clubs, etc. At 38 lbs and being a smaller keyboard dimensionally, the CP4 is FAR lighter and easier to handle. I don't feel like anything will snap off in transporting, which I know would happen with the Roland at some point... for me anyway, as I'm not always as careful as I should be. I feel like the Roland has more "bite", possibly because of the wider range of dynamics... when you dig into it hard, it responds more satisfyingly than the Yamaha. But again, compared to the grand I've got, the Yamaha is actually closer to it than the Roland in that way. As I said, I love both of these keyboards and feel like it just depends on how you plan on using it. I've chosen to use the Roland in the studio, but the Yamaha when I'm packing up to play somewhere. Sure can't go wrong with either of these great pianos.

      I agree. The Yamaha did sound closer to a real piano, but i have to admit the RD800 piano sounded like a piano with butter. The RD800s piano sounded like it had an identity. It had a presence with a richer low and mid tone.

    I always feel that the Yamaha keyboards in general tend to suit better for jazz, gospel Rnb, and a Roland's punchier sound fits perfectly on a rock/metal song.

    The thing that sperates two for me is the feel of Rd. It feels angelic. Also you can change the tone color with a nob which can change an upright sound all the way to a full grand or go through all the Rhodes pianos from a mrk1 all the way to a dyno just by turning a knob. you can customize it basically with that tone color knob

      Hi. Have you played both the CP4 and RD-800? If so, can either perform 16th notes at 90BPM? I'm looking for a fast action 88-key hammer action keyboard to use with my software instruments (Omnisphere, Keyscape, Superior Drummer, etc.) I've done extensive research online regarding various keyboards, and have narrowed my search down to the following:
      - Studiologic SL88 Grand
      - Kawai MP7
      - Kawai VPC1
      - Roland RD-800
      - Yamaha Motif (any model... all use Graded Hammer Effect, I believe)
      - Yamaha CP4
      I haven't been able to play anything above except for a Motif XS8, which I recall enjoying. I didn't like the action on the Roland Juno DS88, Yamaha MX88, nor Yamaha MOXF8. My guess is that I'd like the MP7, VPC1, Motif and CP4 the most.
      Thanks for any help!

    • @geoffk777
      @geoffk777 5 років тому

      Probably too late to help, but you want a triple-sensor action. The Kawai, Roland and CP4 all have one, so it comes down to which you prefer the feel of. The Motif is double-sensor, so not suitable. Not sure about the Studiologic.

    I am a classical pianist, and have always loved yamaha products. But i must say, the roland rd 800 is a beast. i can play chopin, liszt, and scriabin etudes and i feel like im playing in a grand piano. i spent the first week with it giving it the sound and feel i wanted, its amazing. by the way, out of the box the piano sounds ok, but you have to make it your own with the piano editor. and trust me this thing is amazing.

    • @DihelsonMendonca
      @DihelsonMendonca 7 років тому

      Interesting ! I found RD800 too light for the real piano. Have you ever played Ronald A90 ? To me it´s the closest thing on this price range ( but it´s old now, so I must find a new one with a similar mechanics in order to play classical music.

    • @rinoceronte1
      @rinoceronte1 7 років тому +1

      Dihelson Mendonca well the thing about how soft or hard it feels it's a matter of editing the piano, you can make it feel extremely light but you can make it really hard to press.

    • @DihelsonMendonca
      @DihelsonMendonca 7 років тому

      impromptu Does this piano adjust the mechanics ? I´ve seen lots of electronic pianos that adjust the tone level, how soft or hard you need to play in order to get the metalic tones with less power, but it´s not the same thing of adjusting the mechanics itself Action is a thing that you know how an acoustic piano can play even with the electronics are turned off, for instance I can calculate my ammount of force to plau Chopin´s Polonaise Op 53 in a Yamaha piano, or Steinway, it´s the correct weight that the keybed has. A 61 note light keyboard, for instance would never give the feel of a real piano. I´ve seen some videos and some guys say that Roland V-pianos are some of the best on the action.

    • @rinoceronte1
      @rinoceronte1 7 років тому

      Dihelson Mendonca Listen, there will never be anything like the real thing. I love grand pianos, its all i ever want and i have owned a few. I am extremely picky when it comes to them. When i sit on a grand piano to test it, there are a few pieces that i play on it to see if it thrills me and keep up. i play chopin etude op10 no1, op 25 no.6. Schumann Carnaval, Rachmaninoff prelude in G minor, Beethoven appassionata last movement. I can within a few seconds of sitting on a piano know if it can take anything i do on it. Now back to the RD800. the RD800 can take almost everything i can throw at a good grand piano, the rate of repletion in the keys is sick!!! trust me its a solid instrument, however... you do have to mess around with the action editor and then save it so that as soon as you turn on the piano, its exactly how you want it. But my God, the sound that i have been able to get out of it. When i sit down on it i forget that im on an electric. But thats me. I love this piano and will always have it with me even if i have a steinway grand at home. By the way im not an average piano player, i play really difficult things, an i am extremely picky. yamaha has the avantgrands, but they are extremely expensive and there is no way in hell im paying 8 , 10 , or 19 grand for something that is electric and depends on a little electric wire to turn on, when i can have a good used grand piano.

    I'm looking for an 88 keyboard to use as a controller to midi into my computer live but also serves as a backup keyboard if my computer goes down. I use real sample piano, Rhodes, String, Synth libs, that blows away anything a keyboard can do.
    For me it's about versatility. That is where the RD 800 shines. RD-800 allows for storing of Live Sets to USB flash drives as well as its internal memory. This is a great feature for those who tour using rental gear, as I can show up at the gig with just a flash drive and have my whole show loaded into an RD instrument in seconds. You can save and load Live Sets individually, or all in one go.
    The other cool thing about the RD-800 is the Audio Record feature. Here, one can record full performances as a 16-bit, 44.1kHz WAV file straight to a USB flash drive, and then have playback of the audio start and stop by striking a key. One can also use external audio for this purpose.

  • @markfowlermusic
    @markfowlermusic 10 років тому +28

    The Roland recorded wav audio is far better than yamaha, the sound is more direct, fuller and with deeper bass, this gives an overall higher quality recorded sample.
    However you can't tell from a recorded sample uploaded to youtube how they truly sound. The cp4 recorded audio is poor and does not reflect how it actually sounds live.

      kaputasri not played CP1, but that is an old model now obviously as you probably know. It has been out many years now, like the Roland V-Piano, both flagships still though I am guessing. I wouldnt go anywhere near either though, over-priced and they are not new technology anymore, CP4 is amazing, I could never get bored of this instrument, cant say the same thing for Roland pianos, I have owned many different rolands and yamahas over the years, none of them come close to my CP4.

    I actually prefer yamaha pianos, they sound warm and bold(even to the other instruments i.e strings/e.piano). but it might depends on the genre of the music anyway. but as for me, I am a church musician, so CP4 wins here. Roland on the other hand is not bad, but as what I've heard, it sounds really thick and hard but it might good for jazz and rock type of songs anyway.

    Yamaha has more than 100 years of piano building experience so the sound of its digital pianos will always be more authentic than any other comparable brand of hardware digital pianos. The RD 800 overtones have a very short length (despite its supposed sympathetic string resonance) and don't flourish like the CP4 does and the RD 800 sounds synthetic and clunky. I hate playing classical on a digital piano but with the CP4 I was pleasently surprised, not ideal but not bad either. You can forget classical music on a RD 800 all together. You can try to find a Roland keyboard anywhere on a Michael Jackson concert, you won't find it, except for a D50 and an analog Jupiter 8, which were killer synths for their time. Jackson's musicians only used Yamaha and Korg keyboards, knowing that Jackson was (more than most of us) dangerously critical of the whole process of studio recording, performing live and choosing the right instruments and equipment.

    As always, the Yamaha has better piano sound out of the box (brighter/clearer) than Roland. However, you can modify the audio much more on the Roland, and make it sound exactly as bright as you want it to be. The overall user-friendlyness and fast-to-access controls makes the Roland a much better stage-piano than the Yamaha. Not to mention the awesome layout of the live-sets and the option for 4-sound layers (I'm unsure if the Yamaha featured that).
    But yeah, the Yamaha piano-sound is just wonderful.

    • @Wistbacka
      @Wistbacka 8 років тому

      +Mercurial Stranger If userfriendliness and/or sound quality is compromised in favor of weight and form factor it is a bad compromise. For any instrument this is true.
      Of course, there will be a practical limit coming against you at some point,, but both these pianos are nimbler and lighter than the RD700 and CP300 before them. And those were considered to be portable enough.
      So yes, 50 pounds difference in weight is significant, but not a deal breaker as the two other factors are much, much more important.

    I Played both and found that the Cp4 surpasses the RD800 on many facets. Action, AP sounds, so many great sounds[ strings, organs, you name it, with multiple versions of each. Ease of use especially on stage , and I do have a high energy classic rock band. After enjoying a Korg SG ProX for many years on stage, and demoing both of these pianos I bought the CP4 and it has added a new dimension to our sound. So glad I purchased it over the Roland

      I agree with most people, I much prefer the Roland RD-800 over the cp4. It's a much better and more involving instrument than the cp4. Most importantly the RD-800 has sympathetic string resonance, 128 times more velocity sensitivity and all 88 notes were sampled individually, one of the best action and is well built. The cp4 sounds too bright, uses samples stretching instead (not all 88 keys are internally sampled), loops the sound and looks much more cheaply built.

    • @melsalvatore1759
      @melsalvatore1759 10 років тому +4

      I too much perfer the Roland RD800. The APs on RD800 sound so rich and authentic where the CP4 seems almost like a recording of a real good piano. Plus no sympathetic string resonance makes it sound so bland and lifeless. But still CP4 in general is ok and maybe some better EPs. I had a chance to play both extensively and the RD800 is by far the superior. However, I have only played them with headphones and monitors. Playing live on PAs might be a whole other story. But I still think the CP4 is WAY overpriced. It really is a sub $2000 piano. Feels very cheaply made, but Im sure it's solid enough to be road worthy. The Kawai MP7 is far better than CP4 and closer to the RD800. I enjoyed playing it very much but not as much as RD800.

    • @RogerioPefi
      @RogerioPefi 10 років тому

      I never liked this nasal sound of Roland's acoustic pianos. The Yamaha CP4 is more full in medium ranges. The RD have good higher and bottom notes but the medium range is boring, without body, and still has that exaggerated attack that bothers me a lot and that makes it difficult to play more fluent melodic phrases. The EPs are great in both, but my choice, today, would be the CP4. I think yamaha has the best acoustics pianos for jazz and classic stuff and Roland is good for pop and rock music.

  • @ChapHammersmith
    @ChapHammersmith 10 років тому +1

    So here are the facts: The CP4 has the most realistic acoustic grand piano sounds and its action is slightly heavier than the roland and more akin to many grand pianos. The Roland has many other sounds that are more authentic than the CP4, especially its electric pianos and strings. The overall interface and ease of use I found to be better on the Roland, much like its predecessor, very nice. It is a hefty beast though in comparison to the CP4 but it is a beautiful metal beast instead of the plastic of the CP4, (just talking about the surround not the keys). Both sets of keys have a very nice ivory feel, but the surround of the rd800 and rd700nx before it made playing feel nicer. If you have a rd700nx, keep it, there isn't much in it between it and the 800 - some people still prefer the 700nx. On this i can't comment as I haven't played both for an extensive amount of time.
    As lovely as the Rolands are to play, and all the perks they offer over the CP4, I just can't get to like the acoustic sounds, even the V piano didn't cut it compared to the CP4 on that front. The action is personal preference, i prefer the heavier action and the wood reaction of the Roland, some prefer the lighter, more forgiving action of the roland.

    Roland definitely has a richer tone. You can hear more of a deeper bass from the play of the RD800. However, I think the Yamaha bested the RD800 when the player was performing his runs on the keys. During the runs, the sounds on the Yamaha keyboard was more fluid. Conversely, the runs on the Roland RD800 were good but sounded more disconnected; each key strike sounded independent when moving from one key to the next.

    Roland definitely has the best hammer action keyboards on the market for playing piano in this price range (Kawai probably has them beat with their double escapement keyboards which cost a whole lot more). Their piano samples are also frankly incredible. But if you need anything beyond astounding pianos and a handful of other passable sounds, Look elsewhere. IMO it has that Yamaha beat in every way though, except price. I think it's just a couple hundred more. But if I was looking a for non-workstation stage piano thats not a Nord, I'd buy the RD800. Played one the other day and didn't want to get up.

    • @Wistbacka
      @Wistbacka 8 років тому +2

      +jimi18032 That is an utterly UNuseful comparison, as the RD300 is based on the the RD700 with older technology both for sound (GM2) and for how the keys feel and behave (PHA-3), compared to the RD800 which (I believe) have a new sound engine and newer keyboard (PHA-4) and is the main competitor to the CP4.
      I tested both the CP4 and RD800 a while a go, and while the piano sound is undoubtly better out of the box from the yamaha, it felt really bad to play compared to the RD800. But then again; I've only owned a Roland piano. That said; I absolutely love how Yamaha's Clavinova-series feel to play on.

    I bought the RD. You can see it in my pic here. I was brought in by it’s great set up and variety of sounds and it’s a gorgeous keyboard. That being said after watching this video and others I wish I could go back and get the CP4. The Roland sounds are brighter and more vibrant but the Yamaha just sounds real as F$CK! It really does. It sounds so freaking real and at the time Guitar Center was selling the CP for about $500 bucks cheaper if I remember right. I’ll chalk it up to getting caught up in a pretty keyboard with lots of cool lights rather than using my brain and most importantly my ears. Big mistake for sure and a costly one. Don’t get me wrong, the RD is still a fine board but it weighs a freakin ton and definitely has its limitations. The problem now is how do I sell this brick?

    The Roland sounds so much better then the CP-4 in this video. I totally understand why producers would rather have the Yamaha CP-4, it sounds neutered, which I can imagine would be better when laid down in a track and behind other instruments.
    As a pianist originally, the RD-800 is hands down the better pick if judging by this video alone. Though the Yamaha CP-4 is much lighter, and supposedly the action is wonderful even compared to the RD-800 (both of these are excellent pro's). I hate to say it, but real pianos sound more like the RD-800, then the Yamaha CP-4 (I've tried both before). They are dynamic, they have a fullness, and each piano sounds unique (which I think Roland tries to capture). It's fair to say though that since both of these instruments have EQ's, you could always just EQ it to suit your taste.
    I have always loved yamaha, and if I had a recording studio, I would most definitely buy one of their grand pianos. Ironically though, as it stands, I'll be purchasing either a Kurzweil or a Roland stage piano on my next purchase, regardless of how nice the action is on the CP-4.

  • @dbw168
    @dbw168 7 років тому +3

    Played on an RD800 a few times. The action and the layout are both excellent. I just do not like the piano sound. Somehow, it seems "synthesised" to me. Nord samples, particularly the Fazioli, sound more natural and realistic to me. Even some of the samples in the Kronos (which is really a work-station) sound more convincing. A salesman told me that you really had to tweak the piano sound to make the best come out of the RD. I must confess that my opinion is based on playing stock sounds straight from the forementioned boards.

      Your retailer needs to get their facts straight. There was a recall because it was possible to plug the power cord into the XLR ports on the board, which created risk of damaging the board, and also a shock hazard. That has also since been remedied, and frankly wasn't really a problem to begin with.

      tartan11463 Casio's are probably the best value for what you pay, but their sample quality is no where near boards in the RD800's price tier. The Nord's Fazioli, the CP4's CPX, and the Kronos piano samples seem to be what most consider best, out of those I think the Nord has the best quality of sound, but the Nord's action is lacking, and the company overall rips you off like crazy. basically you get a $2000 keyboard for $4000 because of the brand name, which is why I'll never buy anything from them and I know I'm not alone. I'm in the process of saving up for a Kawaii ES8 or MP11.

    • @wesbern
      @wesbern 8 років тому

      *****. Sure, everything is subjective. That's why I recorded samples for 10 musicians (and one sound engineer) and all except 3 preferred the sound of the CP4. The RD-800 sounds very synthesized, especially with the lower keys. It sounds like a reverb playing from a speaker rather than from a natural acoustic source.
      By the way, I'm only talking about piano/grand piano sounds. It's hard to compare electric piano/synthetic sounds as that's all dependent on each manufacturer's preferences and interpretation.

    • @alexanderleeart
