  • Well sometimes we end up being our own worst enemy when it comes to gardening. Thus my problem with starting my pepper seeds. I will restart again and see if I can still pull off some pepper starts in time for gardening this year.

Last year I dropped a whole tray of very tiny Lisianthus seedlings that take weeks to even germinate. I knew I could not restart, so I picked through the pile of soil all over my floor and transplanted as many as I could save. It took me a long time but it was worth it. The ones I saved gave me beautiful blooms. I was the most proud of those flowers because I didn't give up on them. I'm glad you decided to reseed your peppers and not give up. Showing us that it isn't always sunshine and rainbows is so important. Thank you for that!!

I got so busy with other garden things this year that I let my flower seedlings in the garage dry out. Went in and everything was keeled over and floppy.
I filled their tray full of water and let them sit for a few days to see what made it and potted the survivers up, thankfully only lost a quarter. I've been growing these same flowers in the same way for four years now very successfully, but mistakes still happen!
The great thing about growing from seed is that there is less of a financial loss should something happen, compared to bought seedlings.

Last year, I got some bad starting soil and lost 90% of my seedlings to fungus gnats. Once you have them in the house, they’re really hard to get rid of, especially if you have houseplants.
This year, I’ve been diligently changing out yellow sticky traps, using Mosquito Bits, and Neem Bliss to keep them at bay, but nothing has eliminated them 😢.
I’ve managed to maintain about 75% of my seedlings.
I’m so proud of every survivor!

I've been there, done that. Many times. This year I lost a bunch of herb seedlings because I didn't up pot them soon enough. Getting the right amount of water is one of the hardest things to learn with gardening. One trick I learned to watering seedlings in tiny cells is to wait until the top of the soil turns a light brown color. If it's still dark brown and damp on top, then it doesn't need any more water. Once they all turn light and dry on top then I add a little water to the bottom of the tray and watch for the soil color on top to darken. If it doesn't darken after an hour or two then I add more water to the bottom until it does.

But i scooped up what I could, and just planted all varieties together, and still had a decent harvest. Being much more careful this season! I’ve never soaked my pepper seeds, so may have to give that a try next year.

I had A LOT of damping off last year. This year I’m planting in a larger container, planting shallow in just 1/3 the soil. If they get a little too skinny, I add soil. Let them germinate inside by a window. Then put them outside in the sunlight. I put them in the zippered bookshelf greenhouse outside at night. I also started fertilizing ½ strength with AgroThrive 3-3-5. Growfully with Jenna did a great video on starter fertilizers: “What is the best fertilizer for Seedlings” .

I am so glad you are trying again. I went through this 2 years ago with my tomato's. Everyone of them just had something hit them. It was one day before my planting them out. I was so down. I didn't give up and I planted seed in ground instead. I am up north and have a pretty short growing season. Short enough I shouldn't have gotten fruit. You know what though.... They grew they thrived and I actually got several harvests. They were an early producer indeterminate. Would it have worked with other varieties not sure but I wouldn't have gotten anything or I would have paid an arm and a leg for starts. This way was a chance but I learned and now I tell others. It is worth trying because you never know what will happen.

Garden 2023 my pepper seeds all germinated in 4-5 days and grew so fast. This year's garden season all my peppers took 9-11 days to germinate and are still growing so slow and are so small and I did everything the exact same. Sometimes it just be like that. I didn't kill a single plant last year and this year I've killed at least 20 when I left 2 trays outside on a night that got to cold. Something's I'm just really struggling to get to germinate this year as well but hoping with this nicer weather I can things planted outside sooner than last year since everything is lagging behind so much this year! Give the floaters a poke after soaking to see if they might sink. Works well for peppers. Heat mat helps greatly while germinating. I started my peppers and eggplants 2 weeks ago (on Friday), which was a month later than I wanted to. I started over 70 peppers, and at least 50 came up. I killed the peppers I was most excited about - Jimmy Nardello. Yes I'm starting them again tomorrow after work. I have like 10 varieties to restart. I'm trusting God that He will allow this 2nd batch to be a success. I know I'll still get a harvest, it'll just be smaller. Your new starts will be a success too.

Peppers are a pain - they take FOREVER to root and you have to put them in the blazing light (very close) what seems like FOREVER. Then when they get two leaves, you can put them in regular soil, liquid seedling feed and on that bright windowsill.

Two set backs here this year. First left my peppers in standing water for two days. Leaves were falling off but I think I managed to save them by transplanting into drier soil. Just this week I accidentally changed the mode on my light timer and had lights on 24/7 for at least a week and basically fried some seedlings. So….you are not the only one❤and yes I’m a very experienced gardener. Shit happens!

This year I soaked my pepper seeds overnight in diluted chamomile tea, then I planted them in tiny containers filled with vermiculite until the sprouted.
Some of the containers only had a few seeds germinate initially, so I planted everything that had germinated and threw the labels away, I stacked the tiny containers to the side to dry out as I continued to transplant everything.
Well, then they ALL germinated and I ended up with dozens of unidentified pepper plants 😂
In the end I have over three hundred pepper plants because I had no faith anything would germinate 😅
So now, I’m probably going to donate 250 pepper plants to the food bank.

I’ve learned the hard way that when I start my pepper seeds I have to keep them in a separate seed tray than anything else. They really don’t need or like as much water as the other stuff so starting them on the same tray as the basil maybe have been the issue there

well, not to discourage you, but I have never soaked pepper seeds, and I always have every seed germinate resulting in a bumper crop of extras. Not sure what I am doing right, but nothing special. Heat mat helps. I think you use one too. Hope they turn out this time for you!

I saw where you can spray the soil top w peroxide to kill the fungus that causes dampening off. Did this for the beet sprouts this year and did great, or my seed or technique improved.

Just got back from the local little hardware store - we planted 103 tomatoes and boom it rose 20 degrees in temps and I lost about 35!!! Never happened before but I started my plants in March after 30 years of starting in February and my tomatoes were just barely with true leaves and my peppers are only about 2 inches tall - What a strange year!!!!! The heat came out of nowhere and it is much hotter than it has ever been. So, hence the trip to the hardware store to buy peppers just in case and replacement tomatoes - even though they never have the kinds I love to plant . . . they did have Rutgers so that will be an easy canning tomato and they had a couple of San Marzanos - but no Amish paste. I'm thankful that it is a little mom and pop store and they had luscious plants. I'm kicking myself - Hopefully my Anaheim, Ancho etc will grow big enough to plant soon - Never again. I know better than letting some expert tell me . . . Just about gave up but I need the food.

I pulled a good one too. I tried winter sowing in jugs. I tried to get a headstart because they won't come up til the time is right, right? Wrong. I had so many pepper and tomato sprouts. We had a cold snap. I didn't cover the j7gs. I thought the jugs were enough protection. I lost all but a few jalapeño and a few cherry tomatoes. I up Potted those and put them in a cold frame to reuse the jugs. Now we have another cold snap coming. I have to plant out some of the plants, so I'll have to cover them with Buckets for 3 nights. AND we keep getting warmer days, so all my cool weather crops keep going to seed, even though they only get morning sun. Good luck. Maybe we'll both get it right soon lol

Year before last I set a whole tray of plants outside to harden off and a big gust of wind came up and....well, you know the rest of the story. They were trashed. Had to buy starts that year. This year I've started my calendula and marigolds twice. I don't know why they withered and died, like they got crispy. Not enough water, I'm assuming. Stuff happens, it's a learning experience.
