    I find that working out and meditating before reading difficult texts makes the process easier. My focus is better, my mental endurance benefits from my physical endurance, and I'm appreciative during my physical workouts that I am able to "forget" mental exercises, and vice versa. I will have to check out these essays, especially "The Language of the Body".

    Coming back to this video after almost three months of working out. I've been going with my friend who has been weightlifting for about a year. I love how you explain it as a lifestyle change and encourage beginners to not just do it for aesthetics. Really great video man.

    I used to go to the local gym, and now my neighbourhood has shut down the one at the local community centre. I have to get back...and I did read that Rollins piece when it came out back in the day.

    I dig your channel. My back went out 3 months ago, and I just really recovered.. I joined a gym a month and a half ago. I'm not sure why it went out, but I'm working on my posture, lifting weights 3 times a week, doing pilates and yoga once or twice a week, eating more vegetables, and I have cut down greatly on my sugar intake.
    Being down and unable to walk without intense pain was a wake up call. For a couple of days, I had to piss in a bottle. On the plus side, I had the chance to read a few of the books that you recommended as well as some other titles I've been wanting to get to. Thanks.

    Also, thank you for this video. Aesthetics never motivated me enough to exercise (even though I knew it would make me feel better in many ways) but I like this philosophical framework. It helps to have some sort of mental primer that gives you the motivation to keep moving through what it is difficult.

    Ah! finally this video came out… I had the idea of leaving certain comments on this topic for quite a while as well. Well, do it now. I was basically living in an "Cartesian mode” for the most part of my life so far - where body and mind, if not radically separated, at least body remained as a dark territory that had not been illuminated/seriously pondered yet. It was about one year ago, during an intensive period of time writing my thesis, when I finally came to an awareness of the body itself. I got a pair of adjustable dumb-bells and used them as a kind of “confidence booster” whenever I got lost or desperate in writing. However, lifting dumb-bells for me at that time was still something inferior that only works to serve certain other purpose, in my case, writing, the intellectual stuff. It was probably a couple of months ago, I remember one day when I came across your videos on Ernest Junger’s On Pain and Kobe Abe, then started to consider to include a regular, serious work-out routine in my life. Now I basically work out 4 days/ week, enjoying the gradual growth of strength (especially chest and legs). Just as Kathy’s lines about the similarities between the intellectual/spiritual side (meditation) and bodybuilding, from personal experience, quite true... ha! Besides, really enjoy the two authors newly recommended! I'm exploring more about them these days!

    In august I started training again after two years of abscence. I've stuck to it and my body reacted accordingly. Sadly my psyche isn't along for the ride. I feel depression every weekend and can't seem to get hold of it without help. Training isn't the end all be all is what I'm trying to say. But it certainly helps a shit ton. Even if it is just to stay occupied.

    • @octamedicin
      @octamedicin 7 років тому

      I find cardio to be better for depression/anxiety than "just" lifting weights. Lifting weights give you more of a nice sensation in your body but really sweating it out running hills or doing burpees or whatever is what does it for me really.

    Great video. Sounds a lot like my path. At my age I basically maintain my fitness with kettlebell work. If I can give you a recommendation based on my experience, I highly recommend augmenting your workouts with a vinyasa yoga practice, three or four times a week. A great workout in itself, it makes you look like Bruce Lee in a month while increasing and maintaining your flexibility and challenging/confronting your mental toughness and endurance. I have a regular practice, in my 50's. Hot yoga currently gets a lot of hype but I recommend a non-heated power yoga practice.

    Been doing weight training 3 days a week for around a half a year now. The first five months were pretty underwhelming, but this last month I've started seeing the start of something interesting. I started tracking calories and found out I was -really- undereating. Being a vegetarian, tracking my macronutrients really showed me what people mean when they say it's hard to eat right as a vegetarian.
    Thankfully, I've seemed to figure it out, even if I'd like a bit more protein in my diet. Currently trying to eat 2500 calories a day, still struggling, but at least I'm starting to get some grounds for motivation.
    I don't know why I felt like I had to blurt that out. Weight training seems to be as much of a frustration as it is a release for me, but it's not something I often talk with others about, something about your channel and the people here makes me feel like we're on the same wavelength, though. Love your reviews.

    I have been bingewatching your videos for more than a year now. What are your thoughts on this? Either to be a skinny or fat intellectual, or a pumped up meathead. Why is this so? The human body does not function without the mind, as well as the mind does not function optimally without the body. As you said we should not strive for perfection, but maybe rather equality in spirit. When both mind and body are strong, resilence against challenges is born.

    what supplements do you take? fwiw, low fat diets are probably pretty damn healthy. The traditional Okinawan diet is 5% fat, and they are the longest living population on the planet. resistant starch, fementable fibers, and polyphenol intake are all a good bit more important than macronutrient ratio in my opinion.

      they've been pretty heavily studied because the largest number of centenarians in the world come from there, along with a few other "blue zones," the other blue zones include places like Sardinia and Ikaria which eat higher amounts of fat and liberally use fresh olive oil, so i'm definitely not saying fat needs to be avoided.

      He's saying that you become obsessed with weight lifting, the pain, the humiliation, the endurance, the physical changes, every aspect of it. You become sycophantic, you become addicted, submissive to everything iron.

    • @outkast978
      @outkast978 7 років тому +1

      BOHEMIA - Ehh stretching it a bit. Sycophantic implies a deep lack of integrity in submission to someone/something you don't believe in, in order to obtain something you actually care about. The love/hate relationship of the pain of weightlifting is not that far off from creative endeavors like writing a novel.

    • @outkast978
      @outkast978 7 років тому +1

      BOHEMIA - I'm not talking about weightlifting when I said you were "stretching it,' I'm referring to your explanation of the use of the word sycophant in relation to weightlifting. In the essence of a sycophant, there is not necessarily pain, masochism, or obsession involved. By your logic, the word loses all meaning because it applies to essentially anything that doesn't give instantaneous pleasure.
      I highly doubt you would have used this word to describe weightlifting before this video. (Yes, I'm calling you a sycophant)

    True literati know (from having read the Greeks) that we ought to train for strength AND speed. Slow-twitch muscles, especially slow-twitch hypertrophic muscles, are a sign of an illiterate and mentally unbalanced person, who does not truly "gnôthi seautón" (ancient Greek for 'know thyself').
    Incorporate more snatches and clean&jerks into your workout. Bench press only gives you tits and bad shoulders and worse posture. Deadlifts make you lazy and fat. On rest days I recommend a low to moderate intensity workout consisting of the discus throw or some judo.

      From your profile picture, then it seems like you did a great number of deadlifts.

    I start to listen until the profanity starts. Like my father said: if you aren’t smart enough to speak without swearing, keep your mouth shut.

    So much bro science :) I don't think you have enough real scientific knowledge regarding optimal nutrition. Sadly, it seems you get your info from clowns such as Joe Rogan and The Hodgetwins. Plant based diet is the best thing you can do for your health, and there are LOTS of examples of people building incredible physiques on a vegan diet. not hating, just trying to maybe motivate you to explore more.
