Picked up a 12' Porta Bote for an amazing price, even if it's an older model. Used this method to tie down the boat to the roof racks and it's perfect! Got a pair of Husky tie-downs rated for about 768lbs and it handled 80+ mph with EASE. Hooked the s-hooks into the bottom of the aluminum crossbars when starting. Thanks for this!
@@KoShuFW Thanks! Good to hear you're getting good use out of it still. I love fishing so I know this isn't just a bug that comes and goes. Always wanted one of these while living in Hawaii, would've been amazing. But can't complain about going to local and nearby lakes such as Tahoe and Mead. I'll be posting a video on here of my adventures for sure. Just also got a GoPro Hero 8 Black for a great price from Costco. Will be strapping that to the front of the boat hehe. Thanks once again for sharing this video!
+Brendan Chambeyron Thanks! When I am driving to upstate NY from Brooklyn I usually make a stop mid-way after toll plaza and check all straps (about 50 miles). Enjoy your PB and stay safe both on road and water
You wanted to give when you ratchet down, this way you can use only 2 straps and not worry about it sliding back or forward when you drive. the thing is solid at 80mph, i try to keep it around 70 just in case.
If you shorten the lenght of the straps and prepeare the straps on position before you place the boat on the roof rack it will be much easier. Use a lighter to burn the edges of the straps when you cut them and that way they will stay intact and not split. Also i've found if you twist the strapst a couple of time this will reduce the wind noise when driving on the higway. Any stretched flat are of the strap will cause annoying wind noise at hight speed.
Hello. I just bought a 14-foot portabote (Series 14) and found your video while I was searching for a safe way to mount it on my roof rack. I am worried with the length and weight of the boat that 2 ratchet straps might not be enough to prevent the boat from sliding back or front when going 80mph or when hard breaking. I am thinking if I need to also tie down the bow and stern, but how? Your post is 9 years old from today and was wondering if you ever experienced your PB sliding from or back? Have you ever had to do a hard break and how did it go? Any bad experience that you can share or lessons learned? Thanks.
Great video I like the way everything comes apart becoming compact for a small car . PB vs Kayak PB can hold more gear and passengers , speed can't compare . Down side of the new Alpha Series PB built in transom , it cannot fold to the 4'' at the stern like the older version.
Thanks. Me and my brother were dead tired in this video. We spent full day on the lake chasing fish and got some only towards the evening. It is tough when the water is brown. Hope I will have some time to put together a post about it on my site. It took us nearly 20 min to get the boat packed. Usually it is half this time :-)
Hi Konstantin. Im watching from Australia and putting in an order for one of these boats. Great video! Can I ask, is this the 12.6ft portaboat? How do you find it on the highway with that much hang forward of the front roof rack bar? Does the boat flap up and down a lot or is it pretty stiff. Thanks
Sorry Jack for such a late reply. Google has too many alerts so i did not notice your question. Yes the model is the 12ft. I have no issues at high speed with this method. I put the spreader plank inside the fold always, think it helps with rigidity. The trick is to have enough spacing between your rails, i always try to have them spaced as far as possible which may not be an option on a sloped roof. On my sedan rails were spaced as per installation manual and i had no problem. Another thing to note with this boat is that the rear is heavier than the front on the new model it is much heavier. There is some play when you hit a bump never caused an issue.
military surplus. something around $40 if i remember correctly. must have item, fits more than just seats and oars. i put all loose items there except for head unit from fishfinder.
Hi there, can you please tell me the lenght of those roof bars? And how much of them did you uses with the boat and the bag? I mean what lenght did both boat and bag occupied? Many thanks for the video and for your time.
It depends on your car. You have to get proper roof rack so it will fit your roof. As far as bag size i will need to check but i can tell you right now it is about 8 inches longer than the middle seat. I bought it at military surplus store. If i was to do this again i would look for a hard box to store accessories.
@@KoShuFW I know that the roof bars are diferent from car to car. Maybe I didn't explain myself clearly but what I want to know is how many centimeters or inches both the boat on the width and the bag on the width uses of the roof bar. The boat I think its 61cm (24") but with the bag how much os it? Hoping I am more clear now. Many thanks.
@@SNEVIC seats are as wide as the boat it self. not so sure about width, i will measure if you still need it but it is not going to be for a few months as it is still cold up here and i will not be doing fishing on freshwater till may
Hi, I can’t decide to get the 12’ or the 14’ boat. I had the 12’ before but it was too small for 4 people, I’m worried that the 14’ is too long. What do you think and how do you like your 14’?
It depends on many things considering you can lift 40 kilo boat. I did it by brute force on level ground, I am 6' tall and it was not a walk in the park. I would not enjoy doing it after 8 hours on the water. Here is how I would do it if I really had to: 1. wrap something on one end of the boat when folded to prevent damage when you drag it 2. cover side of the car with something to prevent scratching if you make a mistake 3. Lift one end of the boat and drag it to the car 4. Place one end of the boat on the rail at an angle 5. Push and swing the boat in place and follow video instructions on how to tie it down you may want to put something on top of your rails so the boat would slide, my rails have rubber which makes it difficult. if you have van load it from the rear unless you have a spoiler. lifting the boat on your own when tired is not an easy task, remember it does not have handles. The only thing your can hold on to is the black tubing. If you decide to lift the boat make sure you balance it well.
If I were doing this alone, I would place a piece of carpet under the roof rack, in case it slips onto the car, and load the boat from the side of the car, lifting and rotating it into place. Also, those tie downs look like a pain. I have used rope ratchets to tie down my 2-man pontoon boat with no problems with shifting loads.
If you do this alone i use part of the rack which extends out to rest the boat instead of the car. You can then lift and shift onto the second rack. Easier when you have 2 ppl. Ratchets are not bad i was too lazy to cut down straps to size.

The newer transom is far more robust due to Porta-Bote revising the older transoms less supportive design.
