I think it's wrong to blame this on the general public when even if you do sort and try to recycle, many companies will just throw it in a landfill with normal trash anyway.
It is not a lack of motivation for most people, it is a lack of options.

true. imagine the scenario in south east asia. Most likely countries to successfully adapt this are Singapore and Brunei. Singapore due to strict laws and Brunei due to monarchy rule. But other countries will struggle to adapt this, even for my own country Malaysia.

The over pricing i think is cause some or many thrift places are trying be like ebay so any used stuff they try sel for more to profit from it anytime. same happen in the states that some thrift have gone ebay ways to make extra to pay workers or fill pockets anytime. so gotta debate if what u see is really worth the price at time. the value of anything is what we give and willing to pay for it anytime.

I like the stores that have used stuff, it is a hassle to have search for individual items on craiglist and then drive all over for each one. Where I live people have money, so a lot of them wouldn't consider shopping at a place like this, so the stores that have tried to make have unfortunately closed down. I was able to buy everything for my place at a huge discount, all in new condition, all good quality and saved myself thousands of dollars (kitchen table/chairs, leather recliner/ottoman, full bedroom set, cherry wood office desk/high end office chair, lamps, TV Set/DVD player, computer/monitor, book cases, work area table/chair/tools/garden equipment, etc.. The other reason is most of the furniture stores that sell new items, make you wait weeks/sometimes months to deliver. I just paid the store owner selling used items cash and they delivered everything the next day. The only item I purchased new was my bed/mattress.

But until the "creation economy" is counter-balanced by the "breakdown economy" (turning already created stuff into raw materials) we are living on borrowed times.

    A revolutionary concept :
Creating legislation that both rewards (with grants or tax breaks) or punishes (with regulations in place and increased penalties and fees) corporations that manufacture products that contribute to waste(fed by data analytics) more than other products- rewarding them for creating detailed plans for recycling their products and helping them and others to implement those plans- or punishing those corps that do nothing to help keep waste down or even make the problem worse. America has so much talent , its a shame more effort isnt put towards finding solutions that all sides - the corporations and the environmentalists included- can live with. Same with the homeless problem.

I would love to have a mall of used goods. There would be so much more variety and every time you went there would be different stuff. And there would be much less consumer guilt about purchases.
Generally when I'm replacing something that is in fair or better condition I'll give it away on Craigslist. But this is such a hassle since you have to reply to many messages, arrange a time for pickup, deal with flaky people not showing up or showing up late. For smaller items (clothing, books, etc) I often put them aside and a couple of times a year I'll donate whatever is there to a local thift store. For larger items I'm stuck with Craigslist since I don't own a truck. I'm guessing this thrift mall doesn't do pickups either though.

I WISH this would take off in FULL force in the United States! Our recycling is kinda a joke really compared to the scale at which Sweden even organizes their trash to go to in 7 different colored bags and we can’t even get people to stop and recycle basic items or to “care” enough to stop being LAZY! Sigh 😔

I am surprised they don't get paid for it. They really should. The private sector won't start paying for these services until they start to run out of raw materials. But by then it will be too late. The governments need to provide a financial incentive to bolster this sort of thing so that it runs alongside the production economy, before we get to an event horizon of finite raw materials.

I work for a high end recycling company in the U.S. I have seen brand new stuff sent to be destroyed. This includes computers. LED lamps, and anything with a lithium ion batteries. Now the way I see it, the greed has taken over. They won't give it away, they will have it destroyed to keep the prices up.

Why can't Australia do this??? I often doubt that much of my recycling will ever actually get recycled at all. Not much ingenuity. There's one lady, doing an initiative in how to repurpose items from landfill into new furnishings/cladding for homes. It's unfortunate that we can't work with other countries like Sweden to replicate what's working and adapt it.
