So glad you enjoyed and appreciate this! Loretta is a legend. I live in western Ky, moved from CA when I was 10. Loretta was from eastern KY, Butcher Hollow. It’s was a very poor coal mining area in the Appalachian plateau. In the movie Coal Miners Daughter, Loretta and her husband started traveling across the state to radio stations to promote her first record she made. They came to Benton Ky WCBL radio station, which is the heart of the county I raised my children. The radio station in the movie did a live commercial of Hutchens BBQ restaurant, which was famous far and wide for years for their pulled pork bbq. That was pretty cool having our area acknowledged. I’m pretty sure that was the same radio station that Loretta said something her husband had taught her, that shouldn’t have been said on the air. It was pretty funny, but the station could have gotten in serious trouble over it. If it wasn’t it’s still a famous scene from the movie. Those that have watched it, know what I’m talking about lol. You should watch it sometime Ace, it’s a good movie. In fact I have it, I think I’ll go watch it and see if that scene was set in Benton.
Now you need to watch the movie. I remember when this song came out. Hard to believe it's been over 50 yrs now. Time sure does fly. RIP to Miss Loretta Lynn.
My father's family is also from Harlan...well, actually, to be technical, from Cawood. I remember visiting in the summer growing up. Many, many great times!
I saw Loretta in Concert, in Rupp Arena, in Lexington Kentucky in 1978 or 79. I worked at the venue during high school. She performed with Conway Twitty. I think the entire population of Butcher Holler, Kentucky was in the audience that night. After the concert, Loretta and Conway sat at a table on the stage for over 2 hours signing autographs and taking pictures. They did not want one single person to leave disappointed. They were such a class act.
Classic tune. It provided the title to the 1980 biopic starring Sissy Spacek and Tommy Lee Jones. When you're ready for more from Loretta Lynn, check out "The Pill" and "Don't Come Home A-Drinkin' (With Lovin' on Your Mind)".
If you ever in Tennessee go tour her Ranch If your ever in Kentucky go to Butcher Hollow and visit her child hood home!! I went to her ranch 2 summers ago and made a day of it !!

Jack White from the White Stripes, produced an album with Loretta Lynn, called Van Lear Rose. He played instruments throughout the album, and he also co-wrote a song, and sang a duet with her. Van Lear Coal Mine, was the mine she referenced in this song, where her dad worked. The album celebrates its 20th year, this year. It's amazing.
We have no clue how spoiled we all are in this age. My father grew up in the South on a farm...and they didn't have indoor plumbing or electricity until 1945. or 1947...I forget. People in the past had it a lot harder than we ever did.
My father studied by Kerosene Lantern. He went to school in a one room school house and had to get there early to build the fire in the stove. The teacher was his aunt and she didn't want anyone to think she was playing favorites.
It's always inspiring to see young people opening their minds to these classics, you're hooked now my friend! So much more to see and hear and learn from.
Just discovered your channel. Really enjoy the couple reviews I've watched so far. This one especially, not only because I share Loretta's last name (no relation however), but also because he story is very similar to my mother's. My grandfather was coal miner in the Broadtop Mountain coal mines of Pennsylvania. He and my grandmother raised 10 children and had a small farm. They didn't have running water in the house and fetched water from a spring out back, and of course, had an outhouse that I recall using many times as a child. One of my most vivid memories is my cousin and I helping bring in water for grandpap's bath when he'd come home from the mines. We carried 4 buckets to place on the wood burning stove in the kitchen, and fifth one we used to bring cold water to pour in the tub that was brought up from the cellar every day. Once we had enough water in the tub, we filled the bucket one more time and put it on the stove as well. Once grandpap came home, we were shooed to the far end of the living room and listened to the radio until grandpap was finished.
Her mother was still alive and was able to see her perform live. Her daddy died when Loretta was still fairly young and never got to see her music career take off.
She wrote her own songs and they were about her life experiences. Crystal Gayle is her younger sister. Patty Loveless is a cousin and anither talented artist. Need to check out both of them too
If you like this song and the storytelling you should listen to Dolly Parton's ( in my Tennessee mountain home) as well as ( he's alive) at 9 to 5 Romeo, & others and also Kenny Chesney (back where I come from) baseball is a lot of his other songs.
Yes, complaining about egg and gas prices then buying an 8 dollar coffee at Starbucks. Americans are soft. Now. I remember my grandma and Mom working in the potato sheds in 100 degrees heat in California in the early 60s.
Loretta was not wearing black in this; she's wearing a beautiful green dress which accents her hair and eyes. Not sure why this was converted to all black.
Whether she was reflecting on her childhood (getting married at 13 - it was an abbreviated childhood) or writing about coming home drinking with loving on your mind (DON’T)…Loretta had the uncanny ability to put it all to song for us all to enjoy. She was one of a kind!!!
Loretta Lynne was nothing but pure, and genuine.
Now you got to watch the movie coal Miner's daughter❤
YES! Men In Black's Agent K - Tommy Lee Jones - plays her husband and she is played by Sissy Spacek! CLASSIC!
@@ConspiracySmurf, Sissy Spacek and Beverly D'Angelo (Patsy Cline) both did their own singing in the film.
Came to say this. ❤ her story. So humble and real.
@@ConspiracySmurf Levon Helm, drummer and singer from The Band, plays her daddy.
Loretta Lynn wrote all of her songs
Also , Loretta and Patsy Cline were best friends, one of Loretta’s twins is named Patsy.
Her father past away before she started singing
Her life in a song ❤❤❤❤❤
Great movie about her life, called Coal Miner's Daughter, starring Sissy Spacek and Tommy Lee Jones.
The song is autobiographical - she later wrote a biography with the same title, it's a must read. Rest in peace Loretta.

They made a movie about her life, with the same title. It stars Sissy Spacek and Tommy Lee Jones (Men In Black). You would love it.
The movie of the same name is awesome! I am a coal miners granddaughter from Harlan County, Ky, which is not far from Butcher Hollow (Holler).
My father's family is also from Harlan...well, actually, to be technical, from Cawood. I remember visiting in the summer growing up. Many, many great times!
@jteague1955 my mother's family was from. Bell County but moved to Loyall and Blackstar. My father's was from Black Joe, Evarts and Brookside.
