Loretta Lynn wrote her life in her songs. Married at 15 and started having babies right off. She wrote her songs and recorded them, with her husband and kids traveling all over plugging her song to DJs and radio stations.
One thing I always found endearing about Loretta Lynn is that always called her parents Mommy and Daddy even in interviews. She always claimed her music came from her Mommy's side which is part Cherrokee. Not only did Loretta have kids (6), but she had great-great-grandchildren. She had siblings that also sang, probably most notably Crystal Gayle. She had children who sang professionally and even grandchildren. The most recent to get national attention is Emmy Rose Russell who competed on American Idol. Her audition is worth a watch.
You need to watch the movie. Its the story of how Loretta got started in her musical career and how her fame shaped her marriage and family life. Sissy Spacek played Loretta in the movie and did an amazing job. Tommy Lee Jones played her husband, Doolittle Lynn in the movie.
Loretta Lynn was a country legend & singer song writer who's music has spanned 6 decades. She was also friends with the great late Patsy Cline. Her younger sister Crystal Gayle also is a great singer. She grew up dirt poor & stayed humble & true to her roots. The autobiographical movie "Coal Miner's Daughter" is worth looking at. Sadly we lost Loretta Lynn in 2022.
"The work we did was hard" "At night, we'd sleep, 'cause we were tard (tired)" honest songwriting, rhyming on accent vs. pronunciation... she is a treasure... and proud of her raisin's...
Buried mom this past week. 90+ years old. She did school work as a child by coal oil light. She told the story of coming in from the field and finally having an electric light in the home. I miss my momma.
So sorry for your loss and thank you for sharing! 🙏🏻 It’s so wild to think how much she was able to see the world change in her time here on Earth! Sounds like you all had a great relationship and some great memories! ❤️
Loretta Lynn, Patsy Cline, Dolly Parton, Tammy Wynette, Alison Krauss, Naomi and Wynonna Judd. All of them were the queens of country! Every song they sang was amazing and beautiful. You can't go wrong picking any song from them. Country, with it's influences from Jazz and Blues is the backbone of the classic American music. We wouldn't have rock music without those three components.
Love these reactions to classic country. Loretta wrote this song about her actual childhood and family. There's a movie about it by the same name, starring Sissy Spacek as Loretta and Tommy Lee Jones as Loretta's husband. If you want to check out more of her songs (most of which she wrote herself) - "You Ain't Woman Enough (to take my man)" ; "One's on the Way" ; "Don't Come Home a Drinkin'"
Lived right around the bend from Butcher Holler. Her sister, Crystal Gayle, sings a song with a line about walking down River Road, I lived on River Road. Our parents wouldn't let us play in the front yard because of all the coal trucks slinging chunks of coal out going down the road.
So excited your doing Loretta Lynn. I knew you'd love her. Next "Fist City" "You ain't woman enough to take my man " "Don't come home drinkin' with lovin' on your mind" "The pill" "Rated X" All of these are great songs! Country Music has so many great singers & songwriters. I heard Loretta had a refrigerator full of songs that she has written & never recorded. I sure do miss Loretta Lynn & will feel the same when the Lord takes Dolly Parton home. Both Loretta & Dolly have been in my life, musically since l was born in 1960. Just like Tammy Wynette. When you finally watch the movie "Coal Miners Daughter" please let us know how you liked it. Most of the movie is true cause Loretta had approval of the script or she wouldn't let them do it. There are many clips(same for Dolly), tv shows, interviews, specials, talk shows of Loretta you can watch on yt. You will love her like we do. Loretta & Conway Twitty were recording a song called, "As soon as l hang up the phone." When it came to the(Conway was talking into the phone)ending of the song, Conway hung up the phone. Loretta came out of the booth & yelled at Conway. She felt he hung up the phone too hard. She told him to never hang up like that on her again!😂😂 They had to do it again. They were great together! If you listen to any of their duets, try to watch them sing live. THANK YOU for doing the great Loretta Lynn. She didn't take anything from anybody, even her husband. If he hit her, she hit him right back. If he cheated on her, she wrote a song about it. She truly loved him. They were married for almost 50 yrs when he passed away. She never remarried. She left us at age 90. So l'm babbling at you again. Have a BLESSED DAY.
Saw her with Conway Twitty in Greensboro SC in 74 with my mom and her friends. Not my style of music but I thoroughly enjoyed it! Some guy yelled out he loved her. She replied I love you too. lol
She sang about real life. My dad’s from where she was and my grandfather was coal miner. He worked the coal mine and tended to his garden too. Coal mining was hard work to provide for your family and then you suffer from black lung until your death. 💗
One night at the mine during dinner break I started singing, "I was born a coal miner's" and then I stopped, not sure I wanted to call myself a daughter. Then another miner sang out "daughter". Then it was on and every miner in the pit joined in to sing the rest of the song. 😀
My brother was a HUGE fan of Loretta Lynn. A few years before she died she had booked TWO concerts to be held in his town on the same day and he figured since there would be two shows he would be able to get into one of them but he wanted to make sure so he called for the tickets EARLY so they wouldn't be sold out. When he tried to get the tickets he was told that BOTH shows had sold out within a couple of hours of them going up for sale so he missed seeing her. Loretta never tried to be anything other than what she was and that's why people loved her so much. Her death was a huge loss to the world of Country Music.
Damn, well done, sir....WELL DONE! I grew up on the edge of appalachia. When I was young, I rejected that notion, but the older I got, the more I embraced it. These people, certain issues aside, ARE America and family is their mantra. I disagree just a bit about the "it takes a village" because these people don't expect, much less WANT others involved in their family. They take responsibility. "It takes a villiage" is a liberal term...it's a fine line between families helping each other and government intervention. It's a line, today, that is becoming blurred, and is to be fought.
Loretta Lynn is one of about 3-4 true authentic original country singers who are women. Authentic, true and realistic. Older country musicians “lived it”. It’s hard to take seriously a supposedly ‘country’ artist who has never even been to the country! You should listen to her song: “You Ain’t Woman Enough, To Take My Man”. It reached No. 2 on the charts and is considered another classic.
You should see the movie called Coal Miner's Daughter! It's her life story, and you can see just how genuine she was. It's a classic that our whole family loves!
Loretta, had a great voice, sang song's of life in her time you should listen to her sing a song called "LOVE IS THE FOUNDATION" a absolutely great song, she also has a sister who also sang her name is Crystal Gayle, she also made it Big in country music. Thanks
Loretta was a legend. Still is. That’s why her life story was made into a movie called The Coal Miner’s Daughter. She made it through the pressures of life to become a country legend. If you apply pressure to coal you get a diamond. But a black diamond only comes from KISS. Hey! How about more KISS music? No disrespect to Ms. LL. She’s gone but not forgotten. 🎻
KY Cuz I heard that on Patty Loveless. lol. Crystal Gayle was Loretta Lynn’s sister and a beautiful singer in her own right. None of my favorite songs by Crystal is “Why Have You Left The One You Left Me For” and, of course, the iconic “Don’t It Make My Brown Eyes Blue”
Loretta a very famous fellow Kentuckian. You mentioned it on your "Never Leave Harlan Alive" Patty Loveless reaction. She's also from Eastern Kentucky.
One of the best vocalists in Rock doesn’t get the recognition that he deserves. Jimi Jamison has an incredible and instantly recognizable voice. This song from his band at the time Cobra is awesome. The guitarist is amazing also. This song is EXACTLY the story of my life and when I met the lady that I married. Sadly she passed away on August 9, 2024. Shortly after this album came out in 1983, Jimi was hired to replace Dave Bickler in Survivor. They went on to make many huge hits with Jimi. Many consider Jimi Jamison and Steve Perry as the best. Great reaction! My guess is that you're from Kentucky. Most Kentuckians will say "App-uh-lay-sha", while most everyone from Tennessee, Georgia, and Alabama will say " Appa-latch-uh". You sound more KY or WV. Definitely distinct from a Georgia or Alabama dialect. Just my two cents. I grew up in KY, and currently live in TN, by the way.
You're in Louisville KY or there about. I think you might have mentioned it a time or two. However, I googled your studio back when I first started following you here because I liked your content and wanted to see what else you might have going on. If you ever watch the movie, the music is actually done by the actresses and they nail it.

One's on the Way describes her life as a young mother before her career started.
Her movie, Cole Miner's daughter is a great movie if you want to understand Loretta Lynn's life. Some embellishments but for the most part true.
One of my mom's favorite singers. Her and Conway Twitty.
