The White Lotus: Rachel Meets Olivia and Paula By the Pool (Season 1 Clip) | HBO
The awkwardness of this scene is brilliant. In general, the vibe between mean teenagers and well meaning adults trying to be friendly is always weird and painful, but having the teenagers be wealthy and privileged and the adult be a trophy wife kicks it up a notch further into a scene that is one of the most memorable from the entire series, in my opinion.
YEAH! Because the wealthy kids act as if they were not handed everything. The irony of this scene is Rachel does not want to be a trophy wife, and tries to fight that destiny. While Olivia and Paula claim they care about social injustice, but does nothing. Well, Paula did something but we saw how that turned out.
I’m a full grown adult, and I would purposely take a longer route if it meant avoiding teenagers like them. I know they would bully me 💀
This show is great at displaying awkwardness in conversation because it often highlights the power dynamic at play. It’s incredible how little of genuine conversation is needed to realize who triumphs over who. Like in this scene it became clear less than 30 seconds in the that two teenage girls, Olivia and Paula, dominated over Rachel and had no remorse about it.
Great acting. Great writing. Great series. Excited for season 3
Well in the end, she is trying to chat up to them to get an interview with the mom
@@alyssapinon9670 So bully them first.
Sydney's reaction and non-reaction are genius!!! The fake smile and the implied condescension... she is just such a good actress! She nailed the performance.
I agree. Throughout the whole series, she really shined...
(In contrast, I though O'Grady just wasn't up to it--especially since her character drove the main action.)
@@droiddevx03 👀
It’s basically being herself.
She plays the same character in every project of hers. You would hand out the Oscars to every actress you watch.
Easily my favorite character in the entire show.
Olivia and Paula's actors perfectly encapsulate two teenage girls who are clearly miserable with their lives and look down on others to boost their own ego.
And being typical obnoxious SJWs
@@raraszek typical for this generation, thinking they're so much smarter and morally just than anyone else while being completely oblivious to their own hypocrisy.
That's human in general for you, not just teenagers.

Actually, they are based on Anna and Dasha, hosts of the Red Scare podcast.
Alex’s character was the most down to earth, relatable in the series.
I loved Jennifer Coolidge
Performance she was hilarious 😆
Also Belinda.
@@mariuxxxx1 yess but she made Belinda dirty
I mean tonya was lowkey pretty nice and normal for a rich white woman she was nice to everyone I mean I would take her cash just saying
@@kkandsims4612 she was not nice, she manipulated Belinda just for her own well-being and then she threw her away
I was so glad when Rachel undressed and the smirks were wiped off Paula and Olivia’s faces. They were so mean to her when she was just trying to be friendly.
Isn’t there a subtext that Rachel knew all along who the mother was, that she was being disingenuous with her ‘innocent’ questioning, a slightly thirst hungry grasping characterised here as being native to the working classes, while the upper class daughter sees it coming a mile away and bats her away with condescension in a way only an elite can. I think generally with the white lotus there are no goodies and baddies. Everyone is layered.
They aren't real people
@@Cryptech1010 but I suppose cats are ?
@@Cryptech1010 I think everybody commenting already knows that… which is why they are talking about the fictional characters because it is a fictional tv show that people respond to with their own personal opinions and discourse.
@@Cryptech1010 why are you nasty for no reason 🤷🏽♀️
Her body/looks are her power. Rachel fights this for most of the season with her typically modest outfit choices that downplay her body and desire to have a fulfilling job and not just be the trophy wife. She has virtuous aspirations and is outwardly kind and friendly, but just gets repeatedly kicked around for it (by these mean girls, and later their mother who criticizes her writing/journalism). This is the one moment where she understands the power of her beauty and uses it to push back - like a silent weapon.
I don't know modest outfit choices. She actually shows some insane cleavage throughout.
Also, this scene is so sad in the context of the show. The girls are basically telling her that she's a trophy wife for a rich guy, and her only response is basically to say, "Look how hot I am." And then, a couple of episodes later when Shane's mother basically tells her that the only thing that she brings to the marriage is that she's hot, I'm sure this sequence jumps back in her and you can see her thinking, "Is that really all I bring to this marriage?" And her ending is the saddest thing I've seen in a long time -- just deciding to accept it and be miserable, like it's her fate and there's nothing she can do about it...
Why hasn’t anyone responded to your comment yet? Your observation of this character makes me so curious to see the show now. Plus, I’m very interested to see how everyone else responds to this outlook of your response as well.
@@ijohnathonwhite8002 its true. It made me wonder too. Watch the show it's very deep but also a funny comedy. Makes you think.
Yessss at the end I was like wait nooooo! But I honestly think she made that decision because she unfortunately never got that one on one talk that she needed to have and I think that’s what made her decision in the end
@@TheOmerCookie Thank man, I think I’ll check it out.
@@k.w2859 wait so that whole monolgue about leaving him,, figuring out her life was for nothing?
It's a masterpiece, like how they showcased human behavior and all the aspects...it's so realistic, and this scene especially is an epitome I'd say.. 😂
Love how all these comments prove this scene right and many focus on Daddario's appearance. The teenage girls pick apart Daddario's character and leave her feeling humiliated for choosing the destiny of a "trophy wife", but once she disrobes and shows her body, their jaw falls to the floor because in this society, if you are a hot girl = you win. They like to take the moral high ground and pretend like they're better for being conscious of social justice, but can't help but feel envious / jealous of Daddario's looks and devolve to objectifying a woman themselves. Her character was weighing the pros and cons of continuing her job as a freelance journalist, so that she can feel like she has more to offer than her looks, and in the end she chose to go with being the trophy wife. Because why wouldn't you in this society that places more importance on materialism and superficiality?
I love how people are saying that the scene loses weight when she flaunts her body in front of them at the end, but I think it was her best way of pushing back against these two. Sort of like a way of saying, ‘you look down on me for being this way, but neither of you could do it yourselves.’
Bla bla bla

Funny because people who hate on others are usually the ones who are insecure or jealous
Because they actually hate themselves and are projecting it onto others.
Yall really got messed by this scene i can tell
I don't think you were supposed to come out of this thinking they're jealous or insecure. They were basically making fun of her for being a trophy wife but once they saw her body they respected her for that, the most stereotypical trophy wife attribute.
It's more about showing their hypocrisy of trying to come off intellectual but still being status quo rich girls which is a theme for them in the show.
@@rvsone1629 subconsciously they’re tho, they are jealous of her physical beauty and the last scene was a manifestation of that

A simply brilliant scene on so many levels. I was hooked.
It was never sunny. Always that weird yellow cast on everything.
that’s what i noticed
are they filming this scene in mexico?
It’s the filter. Movies/shows tend to go for yellow tint when the setting is overseas, exotic, or somewhere perceived as “unsafe”.
In movies where it rains a lot, directors go for a blue filter like in Twilight, The Ring, and The Matrix.
BOTH girls are terrible. Paula does not get a pass just because she may come from a different background. She’s happy to join in.
Pretty sure she was a rich girl too?
Nobody said she wasn’t?
Yes, they are horrible, but kind of entertaining

What a masterpiece scene.
Alex and Sydney should have had more interactions.

These girls are all Gen-Xers nightmare, yet we're not afraid. Honestly, I have so much fun when mean girls like this (who think they are soooo much smarter) come up against someone who out-wits them while mocking them. Basically exactly what she is doing to this nice woman.
And their dynamic here is perfect! Stellar acting.

This is literally my middle school experience going to a privileged predominately white private school as one of the few black girls who did not come from a rich family - summed up in 4 minutes. Brilliant. And painfully too familiar.
Everybody gangsta until sydney sweeney keeps the book aside and removes her glass

I love how the girls are just reading. It's a fresh take on teenagers who are always depicted as being self-centered and always on their phones, not caring about school or anything else Like teens like to read too!
(Spoilers)
Later in the show it's revealed that they're not reading at all, rather every day they're just picking some random books for optics.

Who wrote this scene?? BRILLIANT
Mike White. Go watch season 2 of this show. This guy is a genius.
Nice power move by Rachel, she was nothing but friendly to them and got only snark. By stripping off she told them "you may be a bully but I'm still hotter than you".
Sydney Sweeney and Alex Daddario..
This is it boys, the crossover we deserve..
That was one powerful view point on corporate America and how we all seek confirmations for things that mean everything in the world and nothing at all in the same time.
This is not only a terrific show. It could be a case study of narcissistic personality and sociopathy.
Absolutely!
Probably the only character that had heart that was surrounded by venomous snakes of characters I feel bad about her ending up with him still.
Best tv show ever
I think Daddario will always be my biggest crush.
Her top is the wrong fit. Daddario has tremendous, uh, assets and yet they chose a swimsuit that doesn't flatter her at all.

Alexandra daddrio is just soo beautiful her journey from percy jakson to this uhh i love her 😍
Yes, i am here for the thumbnail.
This has become my favorite scene of the entire series. It's memorably awkward and says some pointed (yet subtle) things about the characters. Alexandra Daddario's thoughts on Rachel stripping off are interesting as well as a somewhat cynical take on the human condition. But I feel like the whole series has a cynical heart, but not overly mean-spirited or nihilistic.
Daddario is one of the hottest women in the world.
I like ur mom
This scene is very well played by all characters and Sydney Sweeney’s nailed the petty attitude of an insufferable privileged teenager.
I’m just confused about the point of showing her jealous at Dadarrio’s body since the 2 girls obviously abide by the trophy wife/provider husband mentality. Daddario’s hot body just validates her point.
The two teenage girls need a slap for their attitude
Apart from that awkwardness, I don’t get what this scene supposes to transpire.
the shallow girls judge her because of her economic & educational background, situation with her rich boyfriend and social standing but become very jealous when they see her body. that's it.
It also shows how fast power can be whiplashed into defeat
@Domonero7 Basically I feel like she was left humiliated by the two teenage girls after the convo, but won back respect just by showing her body off, because at the end of the day we can't help but feel like putting women's appearance on a pedestal. So even if people think you're a loser, you can win back some dignity because of your physical assets especially as a woman. I think it was a comment on how women are objectified (and funnily enough she goes on to choose the life of a trophy wife) despite us trying to recondition ourselves or be aware of these things. Throughout the whole show, the teenage girls have hot takes on social justice and constantly have opinions about modern topics, and yet here they are with their jaws on the floor because this woman is hot lol.
@@MissRiuu Spot on. Beautifully said, Doris!
The best pairs in hollywood face off!
I'm yet to see a show/movie where Alex isn't overly sexualised
Percy Jackson and the lightning thief might be the closest
They know how to keep the views coming. It's ironic considering that Daddario's character is having an internal crisis about whether she should work on having more than her looks. And when you look at all the comments, they're focused on her looks. Must be hard to be that beautiful because people just can't see past your appearance.
You should watch it tho , she wasn't overly sexualised except this scene , i mean There's a few other bikini scenes but they're in a resort so that's unavoidable
The see-saw of the female dominance hierarchy.
To the people, saying that they felt bad for Rachel, when the mean teenagers humiliated her, I say: she was trying to get to the successful mom through striking a "casual" conversation. But after the attempt failed she resorted to the weapon she later claims to despise - being a beautiful trophy with no substance. Not saying the teens acted ok, just saying that in this show almost every character is broken and despicable in their own way.
Olivia and Paula were the typical entitled young Americans who annoy to no end and offer nothing in the way of humanity.
Rich people everywhere are entitled, it’s not just Americans.
