The awkwardness of this scene is brilliant. In general, the vibe between mean teenagers and well meaning adults trying to be friendly is always weird and painful, but having the teenagers be wealthy and privileged and the adult be a trophy wife kicks it up a notch further into a scene that is one of the most memorable from the entire series, in my opinion.

    • @hardcandy9880

YEAH! Because the wealthy kids act as if they were not handed everything. The irony of this scene is Rachel does not want to be a trophy wife, and tries to fight that destiny. While Olivia and Paula claim they care about social injustice, but does nothing. Well, Paula did something but we saw how that turned out.

This show is great at displaying awkwardness in conversation because it often highlights the power dynamic at play. It’s incredible how little of genuine conversation is needed to realize who triumphs over who. Like in this scene it became clear less than 30 seconds in the that two teenage girls, Olivia and Paula, dominated over Rachel and had no remorse about it.

Isn’t there a subtext that Rachel knew all along who the mother was, that she was being disingenuous with her ‘innocent’ questioning, a slightly thirst hungry grasping characterised here as being native to the working classes, while the upper class daughter sees it coming a mile away and bats her away with condescension in a way only an elite can. Her body/looks are her power. Rachel fights this for most of the season with her typically modest outfit choices that downplay her body and desire to have a fulfilling job and not just be the trophy wife. She has virtuous aspirations and is outwardly kind and friendly, but just gets repeatedly kicked around for it (by these mean girls, and later their mother who criticizes her writing/journalism). This is the one moment where she understands the power of her beauty and uses it to push back - like a silent weapon.

Also, this scene is so sad in the context of the show. The girls are basically telling her that she's a trophy wife for a rich guy, and her only response is basically to say, "Look how hot I am." And then, a couple of episodes later when Shane's mother basically tells her that the only thing that she brings to the marriage is that she's hot, I'm sure this sequence jumps back in her and you can see her thinking, "Is that really all I bring to this marriage?" And her ending is the saddest thing I've seen in a long time -- just deciding to accept it and be miserable, like it's her fate and there's nothing she can do about it...

Love how all these comments prove this scene right and many focus on Daddario's appearance. The teenage girls pick apart Daddario's character and leave her feeling humiliated for choosing the destiny of a "trophy wife", but once she disrobes and shows her body, their jaw falls to the floor because in this society, if you are a hot girl = you win. They like to take the moral high ground and pretend like they're better for being conscious of social justice, but can't help but feel envious / jealous of Daddario's looks and devolve to objectifying a woman themselves. Her character was weighing the pros and cons of continuing her job as a freelance journalist, so that she can feel like she has more to offer than her looks, and in the end she chose to go with being the trophy wife. Because why wouldn't you in this society that places more importance on materialism and superficiality?

This has become my favorite scene of the entire series. It's memorably awkward and says some pointed (yet subtle) things about the characters. Alexandra Daddario's thoughts on Rachel stripping off are interesting as well as a somewhat cynical take on the human condition. But I feel like the whole series has a cynical heart, but not overly mean-spirited or nihilistic.

This scene is very well played by all characters and Sydney Sweeney’s nailed the petty attitude of an insufferable privileged teenager.
I’m just confused about the point of showing her jealous at Dadarrio’s body since the 2 girls obviously abide by the trophy wife/provider husband mentality. Daddario’s hot body just validates her point.

@Domonero7 Basically I feel like she was left humiliated by the two teenage girls after the convo, but won back respect just by showing her body off, because at the end of the day we can't help but feel like putting women's appearance on a pedestal. So even if people think you're a loser, you can win back some dignity because of your physical assets especially as a woman. I think it was a comment on how women are objectified (and funnily enough she goes on to choose the life of a trophy wife) despite us trying to recondition ourselves or be aware of these things. Throughout the whole show, the teenage girls have hot takes on social justice and constantly have opinions about modern topics, and yet here they are with their jaws on the floor because this woman is hot lol.

They know how to keep the views coming. It's ironic considering that Daddario's character is having an internal crisis about whether she should work on having more than her looks. And when you look at all the comments, they're focused on her looks. Must be hard to be that beautiful because people just can't see past your appearance.

To the people, saying that they felt bad for Rachel, when the mean teenagers humiliated her, I say: she was trying to get to the successful mom through striking a "casual" conversation. But after the attempt failed she resorted to the weapon she later claims to despise - being a beautiful trophy with no substance. Not saying the teens acted ok, just saying that in this show almost every character is broken and despicable in their own way.
