WOW, my mom's name was Irene and she was born in 1950 around the time of this song's release.
Sadly, she went on a 45 yr plus suicide after my dad decided to bail on us via suicide in 1969 and she is gone from this world
as only 66. If I don't outlive her the lifespan in our mother's maternal side will have gone down in 3 generations by a third.

My Lord thank you for such a beautiful woman, I fell in love with music again. I thought I would never feel that rush of sensation when you hear a song that touches your soul. Now at 41 years on this earth I once again heard REAL music, a serenading symphony of melancholy but at the same time joyful sounds, and to know this ballad originated from the mind and heart of Huddie William "Leadbelly" Ledbetter . Valerie June reintroduced this ballad to me again as if I heard it for the first time. Thank you Valerie I heard your voice.

I like the line "I'll go drink whiskey downtown." I had heard a cleaner version "I think I'll take a stroll downtown.".

+Fried_Death Never heard this chick, or even heard of her before chancing upon this vid; appears to be a sort of Lady Day re-enactor, with a certain vibe, and so I was hoping for the best, but alas-- the minor detail in her delivery you remark on, among other things. Ah, well, I long ago gave up on my quixotic desire to hear someone cover Lead Belly (be they black, white, or green) and do any real justice to whatever piece of his that had the misfortune of falling into their earnest but maladroit hot little hands. (To give you an idea of where I'm coming from, my previous handle on UA-cam, eBay, and a raft-load of other internetz forums, etc. was "Dekalb Blues"... this being an interlingual pun: "qalb" in Arabic is "heart," used by the Sufis in a special sense as referring to one's innermost reality). It's a function of Ledbetter's titanic charismatic effect on world culture that to this day immature/conditioned psyches are strongly but wrongly attracted by it; but they can't deal with his art except to fit it to their simplistic Procrustean beds. Similarly, for instance, there's the case of Joni Mitchell-- a prodigious musical genius, but one who also attracts mimetically-driven dependent souls who feel compelled to favor humanity with cover-versions that are to Joni's powerful originals as a leathery strip of beef jerky is to a sizzling cut of bloody-rare filet mignon fresh from the grill.

+Nuthine Atholl I dunno, I thought Kurt Cobain did a great version of In the Pines back in the day and CCR's Cotton Fields Back Home is a classic. Or The Nields on Goodnight Irene. June did an amazing cover Sam Cooke's Bring It On Home to Me a while back, but this just isn't cutting it.
