  • Today's video is a follow up to what so far has been my most popular video - that on using an external Smartphone Microphone - the one I chose being the Shure MV88 - designed for iPhones. My initial video showed you pretty much just how to plug and play version, however, by downloading the Shure Motiv App you can go beyond this simple set up.
    Note, if you're not on iOS, then there are other Shure microphones compatible with other operating systems that also use this same app for set up.
    The benefits of recording yourself are immense ... both from a personal and an altruistic standpoint. Your Smartphone will give you great video quality, however, without a little help, the audio isn't really up to much. An external Smartphone microphone is just 'what the doctor ordered'.

    Thank you for all this helpful advice. Can you please tell me what equalisation settings you use on your Shure MV88 within the Motiv Audio app? (My piano has quite a loud bass which is not always great for the classical music that I play, such as Chopin.)

    • @TommysPianoCorner
      @TommysPianoCorner  Рік тому

      I don’t use the equalization within the MOTIV app. I have found it much more reliable to apply it in GarageBand after having made the recording. Cutting frequencies at the point of recording means you can’t really add them back whereas by adding EQ afterwards we can play around with the result much more easily.
      Have you tried positioning the microphone a little further away from the bass? This might be enough to attenuate it.

    Thanks for this video. Just ordered the shure88. Would you mind sharing your settings for recording an acoustic piano? Cheers

      Download the MOTIV app first. I generally pick the Acoustic setting (it has a guitar symbol). The main thing to think about is the Gain. For my piano I set it quite low. Simplest thing is to position the mic first and ask someone to watch whilst you play. Those monitor levels (the green bars) should never go red when you play at your loudest. Once set the mic remembers for next time. However, if you put it somewhere different then you need to do this exercise again. I’m sure you’ll get a lot of value from this mic!

    Thanks for the great video, Tommy! I used the preset Acoustic setting but the recording came out with a low volume and reduced dynamic. The compress is set at low at that setting. Do I need to adjust it to no compress? What are the settings in your recording of the waltz? Thanks!

    • @TommysPianoCorner
      @TommysPianoCorner  9 місяців тому +1

      I suspect a low volume is more due to insufficient gain and perhaps microphone placed a little too far away.
      Compression will reduce the dynamic range but it does so by lowering the volume of the loudest parts whilst increasing the volume of the quieter parts. So its effect makes the overall recording seem louder rather than quieter if that makes sense.
      I personally leave compression off.
      Are you capturing audio and video in the same device? I use one phone to capture the audio and a separate one for the video. This means I can place the microphone much closer to the sound board and strings.

      Thank you, Tommy. That makes sense. I don’t know how to combine audio and video recordings. Could you please make a video for that? Thanks!

    Hello, where is the best position for this phone. I am getting quite a metallic sound.

    • @TommysPianoCorner
      @TommysPianoCorner  3 роки тому

      This depends on many factors. First have you tested out the different piano sounds available with the Clavinova - some may render in a recording better than others. The next thing is your room. Depending on where the piano is and the size of the room, the best placement could change enormously. Try to find somewhere that doesn’t get too much of the thud of the keys (very common with digital instruments) yet is able to pick everything properly. If the piano sounds nice in the room, I’d be inclined to test it with the microphone a good way back from the piano with the volume as high as you think sounds ok. I hope that helps

    • @TommysPianoCorner
      @TommysPianoCorner  3 роки тому

      That is an excellent suggestion thanks. I’ll do that. In terms of how it works with the MOTIV app by the way it is exactly the same - I have tested it. However, on the iPad Pro with USB-C the app does not recognize it properly - Shure told me it is because Apple changed the power settings of that port unexpectedly. It works perfectly well with the iPhone though.

    Hi,
    Great video. I thought you could help me with this. I got Shure mv88+, and connect it to my iPad in order to make videos of my piano playing. I go into the Motiv app settings first and then open my Camera app to record the video. However, when I play the videos back, there is a clicking/pricking sound occurring every now and then and quite randomly. It is not very loud but piercing. When I only record audio on Motiv app this does not happen. I tried different settings in Motiv to no avail. I would appreciate any ideas.

      Hi. Glad the video is helpful. Have you switched on Airplane mode? This can sometimes cause odd clicking and other noises. Otherwise, you might try downloading the MOTIV video app and recording using that given when recording audio only you have no problems?

    Thanks for this information.
    Do you use the limiter function?
    Also, I have an upright piano. Where should I place the mic for optimal sound with the MV88? Should I have the mic directly above the piano with the top lid opened, or should I shoot the video with the mic 1.5-2m away horizontally?

    • @TommysPianoCorner
      @TommysPianoCorner  3 роки тому

      Hi. I don’t use the limiter myself. I try to ensure the gain is ok. I generally set up the mic and have someone watch the indicators for me whilst I play the loudest part to check they don’t go red but do go into the yellow. As for the mic placement, I opt to capture the audio in one phone and the video in another then combine the two afterwards. This allows me to place the microphone just inside the piano. Try it out with your piano (lid open and mic positioned just inside). If you capture audio and video together, then of course placement will also be guided by getting a good view. I highly recommend you try out a few options. If you action is a little noisy for example you might not want to place the mic too close to it. You might also find you need a way of placing the mic so your phone does not touch the piano (in case of vibrations). Always adjust the gain every time you move it as otherwise you won’t get a good example.

      @@TommysPianoCorner Thank you Tommy. I wanted to ask, if I want to record piano music, so it will be done with stereo recording. If I want to record vocal + piano with 2 mics, there piano mic will be stereo, but the vocal mic would be mono? This means that I will need to use a audio interface to record them. Is there a setting when recording for both stereo for the piano and mono for singing? Or can you only choose stereo? If you can only choose stereo, does that mean the vocal music will only come out on 1 side of the speakers (left or right)?

    • @TommysPianoCorner
      @TommysPianoCorner  3 роки тому

      This depends a lot on what equipment and technique you intend to use. You could see if you can get both vocal and piano simultaneously in one take with a single MV88. Alternatively, you could first record the piano part and then separately record the vocals (playing the piano track back through headphones). You again still then just need the one microphone. If however you want to get more advanced and mic both the piano and singer separately and record simultaneously, then you’ll start to need multiple microphones and an audio interface or field recorder. Most microphones are mono and you use two or more to create the stereo effect. In reality, there are two microphone capsules inside the MV88 which is why you can create a stereo track with it. I hope that helps.

    • @JMTTM
      @JMTTM 3 роки тому

      @@TommysPianoCorner Thanks Tommy. So if I have 2 MV88, I could potentially use 1 to record the piano in stereo, and then the other 1 to record vocal in mono simultaneously? I would just need to use a audio interface.

    • @TommysPianoCorner
      @TommysPianoCorner  3 роки тому +1

      I know that it is possible to plug an MV88+ into a MacBook and record in GarageBand with it. The same should be true of the MV88 as long as you can find an adaptor (so far I have not seen). I have never seen the MV88 used with an audio interface (it has its own built in). The simple solution would be to use two phones (one for each mic) and then combine the two tracks later.

      Shure now has the MV88+ Video kit that supports many Android phones and USB C. Basically a slighty upgraded mic, stand, phone holder in a kit. The software is the same so everything else in this video is still relevant. Very good product!
