Great series and a daily highlight to look forward to. What would add some additional magic would be if there was a custom guitar case build. A guitar this unique deserves a unique case.
Hi, Ben. I used to cut the fret slots before glue the fretboard on the neck. Doing this, you can pin some small nails just on 2 fret slots (3 and 16, for exemple), preventing the board to move when you apply pressure glueing it. After glued, all you need to do is remove the nails. When the frets are installed, they will cover the holes (the holes need to be smaller than the fret wire, of course). Best regards and thank you for the incredible content that you provides \m/
I'm loving this series. It's just the right mix of demonstrating basic skills and pushing the envelop, and is exactly why I'm a Patreon subscriber. It was your 9- and 12-hour builds that gave me the confidence to build my first "from scratch" guitar. I love seeing the techniques from previous builds reinforced with a different design, which helps me fill in my mental roadmap of how a guitar is built generally. Thank you for sharing your skills, wisdom, and design sense!
The use of masking tape to prevent the trussrod becoming fouled is espoused by the great Melvyn Hiscock in his Iconic book : "Make Your own Electric Guitar". Interestingly enough, I believe he also supported pinning the fretboard with small brads to prevent slippage while under the cauls and clamps.
Ive never even put any thiught to how the truss rod adjustment hole gets there. Thats absolut mastery of a drill right there. I cant even drill a pilot hole into a piece of cardboard straight let alone have the balls to do what you just did.
That was close when you drilled the 1st hole for the trust rod access, you can actually see the chip bulge, consider breaking, and then decide against it. fiouf!
How about using some locating pins when gluing fretboard to prevent sliding. Not drilling through fretboard, just install in neck and have them grab under side of fretboard.
Fella, what I'd do on that is what you do with banister rails, if you clamped a strip up each side of the neck to make a channel for the fretboard to sit in then it wouldn't slide because it would be jigged in place. You could then put a small g cramp at the nut and loosely clamp your fretboard down. Then use a mallet to tap it home from the body end if it slipped.
Nice job on the truss rod plug. I have to admit I was gritting my teeth a little while you were freehanding it with the drill. I guess there's no substitute for skillz and sharp bits. Can't wait to see how this one turns out.
That fretboard will look amazing on the finished instrument. I always like to try to guess what it's all going to look like once the finish is applied.
Good job on the wood insert, very nice! But man oh man I'm way more paranoid and particular than you Ben on straightness! I would build so many more guitars if i didn't fuss over the straightness of the neck and the edges of the fretboard as much.
What, if anything, do you use to treat a ziricote fingerboard? Some oils and finishes will pick up the dark resins in ziricote and totally destroy the patterns that make ziricote so beautiful. Thanks, I really enjoy your videos. Your work is inspiring.
"Bald Man Ben Crowe" ? I see the Movember hair growth is coming on nicely. I heard a rumour that you will be having your head waxed at the end of the month :-) Love the idea for the truss rod access - very attractive and no tiny screws to lose.
Hi Ben. Your builds are rather spectacular! It's become one of my favourite things to watch the Crimzon Guitar you tube vids- please don't ever stop! By the way, is your accent Zimbabwean or South African?
Ben! What happen to the complication build?!?! I'm loving the daily Bob build video's but I believe the complication will be one of the most amazing guitars ever made. Plz let me know what your plans on the Complication build are. Thanks so much for the daily vids also. I know your a very busy man but posting a video daily is an awesome idea brother. I know everyone else thats a big fan of yours and Crimson would agree.
As he answered in previous videos of this series already, the Complication is ongoing. He is currently collecting and filming material to release more episodes in a shorter timeframe (if I understood him correctly).
youve Gotten better about winging it in front of the camera, Always LOve your stuff. Someday i hope to afford one of your guitars. Are you guys still Selling cigar box Kits
Radiused caul on a flat piece of wood , you have no pressure on the center of the board I'm sure it will be fine but I don't understand the thought processes behind that one
I think you must be feeling the love again with this build after the criticisms of the Complication build (which is still going to be awesome), so, while you're in a dead good mood, can I beg you to update your website with absolutely loads of photos of crimson guitars? Let's have a gallery section, please. I'm sure it would encourage people to buy, especially when you have partnered with 'divide buy' finance.
Nah, it's the internet. There's hordes of people out there who think they know better, despite not having built guitars for 20 years like Ben has. I'm sure by now they've realised that they're going to have plenty of people downing on their work, no matter what they do, so they just go ahead and do it for their own enjoyment and share it.
@@scottiecasey9312 That's a good idea ... genius, even. Use stripes of cork - not a complete sheet - so you can see through. If you do patent that an make money, I will make no claim on it - just donate some guitars to schools!
Yes, Crimson now are of the opinion that long videos are bad, and that apparently nobody wants to sit through half an hour or longer of Ben planing wood, even though people pay for that with the 90 hour build on patreon. Guess you gotta pay for that privilege now, heh. Jokes and digs aside, it works for me because I get to watch while i'm eating my breakfast, since the videos are up when I wake up
I’m s carpenter and I often use older style hand tools aswell. Maybe I read too much into it. But I feel like it’s more personal. Also the noise and dust. Hahaha but I guess it makes me feel like more of a craftsman. Go figure
Tiberius Wallace TW- saw a nice gent playing some sweet jazz licks on one this very afternoon ! Pleasantly surprised by the creamy tone ! I’m new to this channel and really enjoying Ben’s style and his audience! Have a great one , everyone
@@korolev-musictodriveby6583 Totally. He's good because he's a great craftsman that somehow gives you the enthusiasm and confidence that you can have a crack yourself.
Ben, im so sorry but the editing of this video is absolutely bonkers, the constant speed ups and changes are extremely confusing and distracting, I kind of miss the old vids...
Great series and a daily highlight to look forward to. What would add some additional magic would be if there was a custom guitar case build. A guitar this unique deserves a unique case.
Almost more fun just watching Ben than watching the build !
Best video so far, full of action and great tips, logic continuity and good shots
Thanks for doing things by hand!

I agree with Ian Osborne that a case build would be awesome!

So cool watching Ben finessing the wood by hand.
This build is required viewing now. Nice one Ben :)
You thought we would want to watch you cut away the material of the fret board by hand? You thought right my friend!!!!! 👍👍👍🏴
I´m loving this series! You´re a great guy, Ben! Thanks for sharing your ideas and keeping that amazing mood on your videos... just love your content!
Yeah, its nice when Crimson shares with their wider audience on youtube.

I've started binge watching these. Your editor should be proud.
I'll let her know, thank you for commenting! B
Nice touch with the truss rod access.
I’m impressed by the magic wardrobe change, you need this every episode, also do that to put on PPE
Love the truss rod insert. Can't wait to see how the body eventually turns out though!
Ben, you are a madman. Love the channel. Love these series.
I love this idea. I'm hooked. I can't wait to see the finished product.
Loving this build. So much. 🤘🏻😍
Loving this build and the enthusiasm Bob

That is a seriously wonderful looking fretboard.
Bring on the Bob! Loving these daily videos.

Good advice on the clamping of joints.
That fretborad is gorgeous. It almost looks like marble!
It's always a pleasure to see what you do! great video!
Miss the complication videos but this one is cool too
Definitely loving the series!
This is so interesting build man! Loving it! I have to try something similar with my carbon fiber-wood composite guitar prototypes in the future.. ;)

I've heard a little salt on the glue joint stops it from sliding around.

You can't fool me. You're making a cricket bat, aren't you?
Well, Rob Scallon just got a working nintendo that is also an electric guitar, so why not a functional cricket bat that is also a guitar?
I thought that too
Looking good Ben, but I get the feeling that not scraping that glue is going to bite you in the backside down the line.

I would suggest using an endmill rather than a drill, but 7mm endmills are an exceedingly odd size. 6mm and 8mm yes, but 7mm is rare.
Make the same kind of caul out of thick acrylic that way you can see through it doing a glued up
except for the cork lined bit :)

Call the guitar The Bat Fan, it liiked like a cricket bat until you fan it out!
Hair is looking good Benny boy, although I can't see any on the top. I take it you have an egg in the nest :)
It's the best cricket bat I've seen.😂😂😂

Steinbergers are attractive, they're basically E-tools.
