    Is it a good choice ? Of course it is, its the MSI Mortar MAX of course. Still a great B450 board especially if you are using a 3200 or 3400G APU. Sling this in a decent case, add some RGB and a cheap PSU and you have a decent gaming rig. Having the BIOS flashback button is a big plus too....every mobo should have one. Thanks for the review, Mike and Kath :-)

    Thank you, Mike & Kath!
    My opinion: Of course a B450 MOBO is still worth it in 2021 (even in 2022). The expensive of 5th gen Ryzen CPU (and the collosal prices of APU's) makes more atractive to buy a 3rd gen Ryzen (and not even to talk about GPU's with PCIe 4.0).

    it is a great motherboard and in fact It's the micro atx version of tomahawk. I have B450 Tomahawk Max and I'm very satisfied with it's stability. Mortar Max is equally great. The B550 versions of mortar and tomahawk are also great boards. If you don't need pci-e 4.0 then go for the B450 versions, which now have low prices.

    Another interesting review Mike. Smart looking board and good spec it seems. I went with Asus Rog Strix B450F Gaming II following your review and still feel versatility of accessing 1st 2nd 3rd and 5th an important assett. With high pricing of cpus why wud u buy 500series mb limit your choices and increase cost! Thanks again Mike👍

    Using this board for 1,5 year now and have no qualms with it. 3700x + 4x8GB Crucial Ballistix Elite 3600 MHz sticks for that 1:1 ratio between FCLK and MCLK and had no instability issues thus far. Runs great with a 3080Ti too :) From all the matx B450 boards available on the market at the time of purchase it had the best vrm(also recommended by Buildzoid), well worth the money, though in current year I'd probably opt for the B550M Mortar Max which is basically the same board but with the B550 chipsets pcie 4.0 capabilities.

      @locolama 2 роки тому

      @@battlecampplayer847 I'm currently using the latest bios available on MSI's support page, but the first time I put together the system it worked without any problems and recognized the cpu. The reason why MSI introduced these "max" versions of their am4 motherboards was EEPROM size on the older units couldn't fit AGESA code for the 3000 series processors, so for the legacy boards they had to cut a lot of features some people really liked - for example the graphical interface of the bios, oc profiles, or even support for older cpus. The max version has a bigger EEPROM and therefore comes with Ryzen 3000 support straight out the box.

    hell yeah it's a good choice in 2021. Want to build a midrange system that can run a Ryzen 5 or 7 to its limits but don't need PCIe 4.0? The B450M Mortar is all you need. There's no point in wasting money on motherboard features you don't need - if you're using a GPU like an RTX 3060 (which isn't that fast and has a ton of VRAM so won't be bottlenecked by PCIe bandwidth) or a GTX 1660 Super (which doesn't support PCIe 4.0 anyway) and a PCIe 3.0 NVMe SSD (good models of which are just as fast as PCIe 4.0 SSDs in terms in terms of loading times, even if sequential bandwidth is much lower) the B450 Mortar is fine.

      CPU support list for this Motherboard is constantly being updated with each new bios AGESA code release. The 5800x3d is indeed supported, however I'd make sure to run it with a good cooler or aio, and if your power supply has enough headroom for a 105W tdp CPU. You start putting all these parts into a case, especially with a beefy GPU and it might start throttling.

    I have an old "msi b450m pro-vdh" which is a step down from this. In it I have run a 2060x, 3700x and 5800x. The last one got a bit warm on the VRM under full load (80C), but performance wise with PBO/Curve-Optimiser OCing it to 5GHz, matched my Asus B550-F that it now sits in.

      Assuming that wasn't a typo, and that you didn't mean B450M Pro-VDH, the B550M Pro VDH is more of a sidegrade to the B450 Mortar - the VRM is almost identical (it uses slightly different MOSFETs but their quality is similar), and its heatsink is smaller but it supports PCIe 4.0.
      If you meant the B450M Pro-VDH, yeah, that's a step down from the Mortar. I've got the B450M Pro VDH Plus - decent board, though I only use it with a Ryzen 3 so I've not been pushing it hard, and I find the PCIe slot layout limiting as I can't fit a triple-slot GPU in addition to my WiFi card.

    • @surfx4804
      @surfx4804 3 роки тому

      @@nathangamble125 sorry yes it was a typo and it was a b450 (the V1 in fact). I also went with an atx board next so I can get to other slots. The MSI B550 boards have a USB 3.2 header for the front but my Asus does no so I got an add in card. For Wifi if I need it I just plug one in a USB slot.

    This MB will be a great choice UNLESS YOU NEED TO CLEAR CMOS. Once you clear CMOS you'll start to have problems with its ethernet modem. Even though it is enabled the operating system will cease to recognise it. There is a workaround: enter BIOS, disable ethernet, then F10 (save and restart), enter again BIOS, re-enable ethernet, F10 again and now you can let OS boot. BUT IT IS NOT PERMANENT, you'll have to do the same process everytime you start your PC. No, reinstalling BIOS nor updating it don't fix the problem. I've searched everywhere and can't find a permanent solution (well, buying a new one fixes it :p). If anyone knows how to fix this, it will help many, MANY users with the same problem.

      The ports are HDMI 1.4 and Displayport 1.2 so it should support 1080p 144Hz. I'm not sure why MSI lists 60Hz as the maximum frequency - in theory there's nothing preventing it running faster. Perhaps MSI just didn't care to validate it, because they assume people using the iGPU wouldn't be using high-refresh-rate monitors?
      If your monitor supports 1080p 144Hz it should work, but it won't run at this speed in most games. Stuff like video playback and older games like CS:GO on low settings would be fine though.
