While Daniel has what can be described as a bit more than slightly urgent tone, as if someone were declaring a red alert along with its associated pertinent information over a PA system (without being overtly annoying, I might quickly add!) along with a hint/dash of excitement/passion for the material being discussed, this gentleman has a more laid back almost scholarly tone that is quite soothing to listen to and which helps lull your mind into a state suitable for absorbing large amounts of disparate information. @@Brendissimo1 You mean where one station stood alone and unreinforced against an entire fleet, destroyed over 50 of them, beat back their boarding parties and ultimately forced them to withdraw or have a federation fleet outflank them? Yes I remember.
I've always found Klingon tactics to be a little at odds with their culture... cloaking devices and hit-and-run tactics are hardly "honorable" and all that, but they do allow the Klingons to leverage their (supposedly) highly skilled infantry in boarding parties while minimizing they time they potentially spend in ship-to-ship combat. As I also understand it (and I could be wrong, I'm no expert) a lot of the empire was built on raiding nearby systems, which would require such tactics to evade local defense fleets... so, maybe.
There is nothing more honorable in battle than victory. As mentioned in your comment, those tactics would have been necessary in early klingon history, and I can easily see how those tactics which won them so many early battles would come to be seen as tacitly honorable by later generations.
Their culture is a strong warrior culture where all Klingons are expected to able to fight. The birds of prey are cheap easy to maintain ships that even the smallest house can get their hands on. These are ships that all Klingons can fight with and so gain a path to glory.
Don't forget that Prototype Klingon Bird of Prey from Star Trek 6:The Undiscovered Country that ship was built to be able to fire it's weapons while cloaked and that was proven when it opened fire on the K'Tinga class Battle Cruiser Quonos 1 with the Klingon High Chancellor Gorkon on board,it severely damaged the Constitution Refit Class U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-A and damaged the U.S.S. Excelsior NCC-2000 before both ships destroyed the Prototype by using a modified photon torpedo from the Enterprise to lock in on the Bird of Prey's gas emissions or as Lt. Uhura put it 'The Thing's Gotta have a Tailpipe'.
In the old star fleet battles table top game it. the bird of prey was simple awesome. It was a glass cannon but with the cloaking it was really a match for most ships
"Oh be honest now, Captain; warrior to warrior, you do prefer it this way, don't you? As it was meant to be--no peace in our time. 'Once more unto the breach, dear friends.' TaH paH, taH be'!"
I wish I had a few of these things. The landing on, and launching from a planet's surface, is a key advantage, for all versions of, BIRD OF PREY, ships. -The cloaking systems are pretty useful too. LoL Of course I, would add many extras -independently powered; primary and secondary shielding systems, multiple cloaking systems, and (obviously)-overpowered weapons -(including an additional collection of phazer grids: on the usual parts one would expect them to be -top-&-bottom of the command section, on the wings -(top-&-bottom), and on it's rear -(again, top-&-botton with a clear shot at anything anywhere behind it) -PLUS...the most advanced medical systems equipped medical stations Federation STARFLEET TECH can, "generously donate"). Just as important, would be equally enhanced personal quarters, and... recreational facilities/training equipment -(A.K.A.=an advanced holodeck ..or two).
I enjoy this video, and the voice narration was very pleasing. I'm very sorry but Daniel voice comes across as a bit harsh and not as smooth to listen to especially when listening about technology. So I was pleased to hear this information delivered in a smooth and steady pleasing voice. It can take a bit of practice to hit that exact tone that doesn't come across as too loud or harsh or accented, and this was done perfectly.
The Klingons sold old Birds of Prey on the open market with *cloaks intact* but weapons removed, which could of course be bought separately from arms merchants. Some Ferengi got a few and reequipped them with disruptors and used them to surprise the Enterprise in the TNG episode "Rascals" [yes, that one when Ro Laren, Captain Picard, Keiko, and Guinan get turned into children]. Now that opens up a lot of possibilities [no not the Enterprise discovered how to reverse aging] for various parties getting their hands on one. Imagine the fun the Marquis could have got up to with one if they equipped it with original weaponry. The Klingon Cardassian war could have started before the wormhole was even discovered. A minor backward alien species could buy a few and copy the design or just some of the tech and get a big boost in capabilities. And buyers aren't limited by the original design, phasers could be fitted. And imagine if the stealth coating from the _'Fortune'_ from the TNG two parter Gambit was applied… But from a story telling experience the most interesting possibility is if a independent merchant owner operator looks at it and goes "This has almost as much cargo capacity as a *_'Firefly'_* class ship, I'll get it.
I fancy that the bird of prey looks much more aerodynamically viable than, say, the ships of the star trek fleet. Not that there is necessarily any air (atmosphere) of course but then again there may be if they are allowed to fly over planets? Anyway they look seriously cool!
Seems like a very good design overall, just needs a few upgrades/adjustments: 1) Needs at least one rear-mounted disruptor bank/cannon. The idea that it cannot properly defend itself unless attacking an enemy head-on may be in style with Klingon tradition, but it won't do you jack-shit if you're dead. The Klingon Empire can ill afford to lose such seasoned warriors and such valuable ships, especially after the slugging match that was the Dominion War. 2) Complete tech upgrade/overhaul. Klingons don't focus as much on R&D when compared to the Federation, but even the most hardened warrior will appreciate a shiny new, far more powerful pair of disruptor cannons mounted on his favorite ship. Better cloaks and stronger shields, as well as more durable hull plating, would also be beneficial.
Star Trek vessels are basically analogous to sea going battleships - I think the cloaking BoP makes a good submarine analog - lying in wait, popping up to fire a torpedo before disappearing deep again to evade
The unanswered question about its design is *warp nacelles.* It doesn't appear to have any on pylons and the large engine outlet on the back is too big for just a impulse drive. Could it be that Birds of Prey have a single warp nacelle, mounted internally with the back exposed? While not having the redundancy of two nacelles it does protect the drive from being targeted as easily, and apparently doesn't affect maneuverability. But how do they shield against it. According to some lore, warp nacelles have to be away from the ship because of dangerous radiation, and also need a uninterrupted line of sight between them to form the field. Although various _shuttle designs and the Defiant_ contradict this layout. And if this layout is effective, why don't most (at least smaller) ships have a single internal nacelle to remove that vulnerability. Or does the *B'rel* use some _other form of warp propulsion?_ There are other factions that either don't use nacelles but have some sort of engine port, like the *Ferengi Marauder,* Hirogen ships, and the biggy, that has a completely internal warp drive with no visible outlet - *Siliban cell ships.* Is there some advantage to having nacelles over other warp drive systems or should Archer have hightailed it back to Earth and Starfleet engineering as soon as they captured a Siliban cell ship early on for them to reverse engineer it, instead of just letting Trip try and figure it out in his spare time till it was lost. Well since they would have gotten cloaking tech retrofitted by approximately the end of series one…yes. [Part of a new series spin off series … *STAR TREK: PRAGMATIC* ]
@@chrissonofpear1384 Interesting, something that should be mentioned in any technical breakdown of the ship perhaps? And what are the advantages and disadvantages of that system vs traditional nacelles (which the big Klingon cruisers ect still use). But I stand by my views on *STAR TREK: PRAGMATIC*
Its stated in some sources (can't remember where, sorry) that nacelles aren't required to make warp fields. But they do allow for optimization of those warp fields. So without externally mounted nacelles, the efficiency of the warp drive is affected. The Defiant class has a significantly less efficient warp drive compared to a Galaxy class, for example, due to the design and placement of the nacelles. Basically it has to expend more dilithium to achieve the same speeds. The trade off is that the nacelles (or equivalent) are much less vulnerable to enemy attacks. So basically they don't work as well but aren't as easy to take out, an acceptable trade off for a warship.
The idea that they NEEDED an uninterrupted line of sight between the nacelles was contradicted before it was even written down, which is why it wasn't repeated much. Very few ships in the original series had visible nacelles, and the ones that did were almost entirely Starfleet. Basically, the external nacelles are a visual design of Starfleet, that people writing supplementary material tried to justify much later.
If I could have any ship in the yard it would be a Klingon Bird of prey equipped with multi-phasic shielding and a quantum slipstream drive! Oh and a food replicator, I dont think they were equipped with one.
I would have a beer and salted peanut replicator and moon DS9 after I de-cloak with my Romulan girl friend and hand picked Klingon crew that has no honor. That would be the perfect weekend. LOL.
Well, the fixed forward weapons make sense considering that the Klingons seem to prefer head-on attacks over being sneaky and underhanded (with Chang being a possible exception), but the cloak would probably open up a number of tactical options.
@@TruePacifist201 yet the cloak seems to go against the whole honor thing as well... Klingon's just so hypocritical. As far as the forward facing cannons if the cannons put out better damage then omni directional emitters sure that can make up for the lack of firing arc, one would think the design would be improved over the years with at the very least a rear facing turret and better shields/armor
Given their strange placement away from the hull out on the wings like that you'd assume the disruptor would be turreted so they could swivel, but I've never seen them do anything like that.
I know they weren't BoP's, but their design would have most likely have been nearly the same just scaled up, but the Klingon ships in Into Darkness were a fantastic take on the design.
A question; is there any records of the naming conventions they use for Klingon ships? I mean, federation ships are named for locations, scientists, battles, so I'd suspect that Klingon vessels might be named for military leaders or famous battles?
You know it's funny that the Klingon Bird of Prey stolen by Admiral Kirk and his crew was ironically the I.K.S. B'REL the first ship of the B'REL class Bird of Prey which in some ways it would explain why the Klingons wanted Kirk in Star Trek 4 as he stole the first ship of this class.
I will only state, this class may be of "old" design, but they were constantly improved and upgraded all the time. "If it WORKS, don't fix it". When you have a design that is PROVEN, you don't run out making others needlessly.(like Star Fleet did). Waste money, resources......or go with what WORKS.
Can you guys do the Prometheus type Battlestar, from the (non-canon) Battlestar Galactica Moore extension series. In particular, I'd like to know what the Prometheus class Battlestar Galactica would have been like, since it was meant to replace the Jupiter Class Battlestar Galactica that was retiring, and had been in construction during the first episode (the mini-series pilot) of Battlestar Galactica. I'd like to know, specifically, what life on the ship would be like, how it would function with its more advanced systems (compared to the Jupiter class), if it would have held a true claim to the title of Galactica after the Jupiter class from the first war, and finally, if the civilian fleet that escapes the Colonial Colanies (during the second Cylon War) would have fared better if they were escorted by the Prometheus class Battlestar Galactica, instead of the Jupiter class Battlestar Galactica? I would also like to know your thoughts, on whether or not the newer, sleeker, more technologically advanced Prometheus type Battlestar, would be a better setting for the coming Battlestar Galactica Reboot, then if it was again set on a Ageing, to be retired, vessel?
The only reason why I would get the Fleet T6 Klingon Bird of Prey for my klingon is because he had the same looking ship but it was T1 and now I want Fleet T6
No way even with the advantage it had should a single B'rel be able to survive combat against a Galaxy class starship. The instant those torpedoes were fired Riker should have ordered that ship to cease existing. But no, what does Riker do? Tries to run and exposes the most vulnerable part of the ship to his foe. Riker, you are a bad captain.
More like some one decided to destroy the ship and decided to not waste time and energy coming up with a better way to destroy the enterprise. I blame lazy writing more than Riker.
Can we have an article on 'magic' pseudo tech used to hand wave physics away, such as Intertial Dampers, Heisenberg Compensators, and/or Antimatter Containment?

@@Brendissimo1 You mean where one station stood alone and unreinforced against an entire fleet, destroyed over 50 of them, beat back their boarding parties and ultimately forced them to withdraw or have a federation fleet outflank them? Yes I remember.
Klingon Bird of Prey One of my Favorite ST Ship
These are ships that all Klingons can fight with and so gain a path to glory.
victory is honorable, thereby all means to achieve victory are honorable
Honour is not found on the battlefield, it is what happens after when the enemy is at your mercy.
@@Zergonapal not according to Klingon after all they kill enemy wounded in the hospital.
One of the most iconic ship designs in Star Trek, second only to Romulan D'deridex-class, B-type warbird!
Yeah. It's also one of the reasons I like the Romulan Valdore class. It looks like a sleeker BoP
Simply put my favorite sci-fi ship
Well done. You may want to include some info about the studio model as well.
In the old star fleet battles table top game it. the bird of prey was simple awesome. It was a glass cannon but with the cloaking it was really a match for most ships
Daniel...... you are the Best!
Someone please do a Spacedock video on the Klingon ships of the 22nd century during the time of Captain Jonathan Archer.
For the Empire!
Please do one on the LARGER classes of Klingon BOP's and Heavy Cruisers, Dreadnaughts.
Awesome work, thank you, keep it up, guys

I wish I had a few of these things. The landing on, and launching from a planet's surface, is a key advantage, for all versions of, BIRD OF PREY, ships. -The cloaking systems are pretty useful too. LoL
Of course I, would add many extras -independently powered; primary and secondary shielding systems, multiple cloaking systems, and (obviously)-overpowered weapons -(including an additional collection of phazer grids: on the usual parts one would expect them to be -top-&-bottom of the command section, on the wings -(top-&-bottom), and on it's rear -(again, top-&-botton with a clear shot at anything anywhere behind it) -PLUS...the most advanced medical systems equipped medical stations Federation STARFLEET TECH can, "generously donate").
It can take a bit of practice to hit that exact tone that doesn't come across as too loud or harsh or accented, and this was done perfectly.
i want one as my personal ship.
I love the B'rel!
The B'Rel is basically the child of a starfighter and a space U-Boat
I love the B'Rel class ships. I'll take three please.
And imagine if the stealth coating from the _'Fortune'_ from the TNG two parter Gambit was applied…
But from a story telling experience the most interesting possibility is if a independent merchant owner operator looks at it and goes "This has almost as much cargo capacity as a *_'Firefly'_* class ship, I'll get it.

I have never really noticed this before but... where exactly are the Warp Engines on a Bird of Prey? I dont see them anywhere?
The most deadly of all space birds.
Tell that to the Romulans. LOL.
I fancy that the bird of prey looks much more aerodynamically viable than, say, the ships of the star trek fleet. Not that there is necessarily any air (atmosphere) of course but then again there may be if they are allowed to fly over planets? Anyway they look seriously cool!
Seems like a very good design overall, just needs a few upgrades/adjustments:
1) Needs at least one rear-mounted disruptor bank/cannon.
Or does the *B'rel* use some _other form of warp propulsion?_
There are other factions that either don't use nacelles but have some sort of engine port, like the *Ferengi Marauder,* Hirogen ships, and the biggy, that has a completely internal warp drive with no visible outlet - *Siliban cell ships.*
Is there some advantage to having nacelles over other warp drive systems or should Archer have hightailed it back to Earth and Starfleet engineering as soon as they captured a Siliban cell ship early on for them to reverse engineer it, instead of just letting Trip try and figure it out in his spare time till it was lost.
Well since they would have gotten cloaking tech retrofitted by approximately the end of series one…yes.
[Part of a new series spin off series … *STAR TREK: PRAGMATIC* ]
Well... now you know why it is so hot in a BOP
chris sonofpear1 Yes 👽💚
LOL.
The reason I started playing star trek online was for this ship
The T-tank serie of Star Trek ships. Which makes sense since the Klingons were/are supposed to be the equivalent of Soviet Union/Russia.
'Speed, aggression, surprise!'
Forwards facing cannons/backwards design philosophy sums up the Klingons.
They do at least seem to have aft torpedo launchers.
Given their strange placement away from the hull out on the wings like that you'd assume the disruptor would be turreted so they could swivel, but I've never seen them do anything like that.
@@akulatraxus9153 They are on gimbles but are still stuck facing forward.

Could you do a break down of the Achilles class from ds9 dominion wars game??
I know they weren't BoP's, but their design would have most likely have been nearly the same just scaled up, but the Klingon ships in Into Darkness were a fantastic take on the design.
I pretty sure theres no Raktajino machine but there could be a Blood Wine fountain on board.
CCS battlecruiser. Keeping the dream alive.
A question; is there any records of the naming conventions they use for Klingon ships? I mean, federation ships are named for locations, scientists, battles, so I'd suspect that Klingon vessels might be named for military leaders or famous battles?
You have to do Ornithopters from Dune!
Coolest ship name ever
You know it's funny that the Klingon Bird of Prey stolen by Admiral Kirk and his crew was ironically the I.K.S. B'REL the first ship of the B'REL class Bird of Prey which in some ways it would explain why the Klingons wanted Kirk in Star Trek 4 as he stole the first ship of this class.
You still need to do a series on the Homeworld Series.
Love the klingons.
Starfleet Command 3 has been updated to work on Windows 10 and is on GOG!!! I don't work for them. I just love that game.

“ Beautiful “ “ Ship “
I have dozens of models and toys of this ship.
Wasn't a B'rel. That was the much larger K'vort Class Bird Of Prey.
Not sure why they showed footage of it in this video.
More like some one decided to destroy the ship and decided to not waste time and energy coming up with a better way to destroy the enterprise. I blame lazy writing more than Riker.
Last time I was this early, Klingons didn't have forehead ridges.
The legendary Bird of Prey the B'rel Class are the Klingon's response to the Federation
