GROW RARE SEEDS | Perfect Carrots, Seed to Harvest

- Carrots are finicky about a few things: soil, water and temperature, but Baker Creek's Shannie McCabe has some solid advice about how to grow rock-star roots in your garden.
I have my kiddos "make" carrot seed tape with toilet paper every winter to plant super early in the spring. They space them ~2" apart and use a watered down Elmer's glue to attach and seal the paper when folding the TP in half. NO THINNING!!! SO so worth the time to make it and the roll or two of TP.
Seed tape never worked for me just do the normal type of seeds
Oh my goodness! Thank you for this idea. I am just beginning a garden for the first time and I don't know if I can even tell the difference between a carrot sprout or a weed. So, this will be the perfect answer for me. I'll plant using really thin TP strips with seeds and not have to winnow anything out. 🥰🥰🥰
@@justinaturnbough2465 did you buy the seed tape ot make it?
If you can't make a raised bed you can purchase a large kitty pool from Walmart. Add drainage holes. They are almost 14 inches deep. They grow awesome root crops!
I had saved one..... then my dad ran over it with his riding mower 🤣🤣 oh well lol
And if you line the pool with black plastic, it will last longer (avoids sun damage)
Robbie and Gary have a delightful gardening channel, and do a lot in totes and her uses the pools.
Kitty pool! LoL
Do not put your kitty in the pool!
@@candypodratz LOL I put my children in the kitty pool when it’s hot. Or I grow veggies in them.
So wonderful to see Shannie again!! She would be a delight as a daughter- in- law.
agreed, she is such a joy to see and listen too !
Tip for clay soil. Dig out the row replace soil with garden mix, used dug out clay soil as filler for potted plants.
Carrots are so fun, I love to just mix up any random old carrot seed packets I have and see what i end up with!
Like carrot lottery!!! I love it! That would be great to do with my kids! Thanks for the tip!!! ❤️
You could always grow on food grade buckets if you dont want to biuld a raised bed.
I grow everything high intensity. Last year, I dumped 2 packets of carrot seeds in one of mine containers. I use half barrels, so the space is 22in by 33in by 11in deep. Kids thinned them out as they grew.
Grew carrots for the first time this winter. They came up wonderfully! Odd sizes and lengths, but for my first time out, I was really happy with them. 🙂
home grown carrots are the best!!!
Home grown anything is way better than store bought! Everything tastes better!
@@jordanwiller1359 and healther for you

Awesome! Just in time!
I love carrots! Great video!
fun and informative. thanks shannie, good to see you in the garden :-)
Love your delivery of the info. Great video 🥕❤️🌱
Just ordered some colorful carrot seeds. Sure are neat seed options compared to what I remember as a kid in my parents garden
Wonderful...thank you!
Very helpful! Thank you
I appreciate this video as I just received the New Kuroda so I felt you were speaking to me! Yes, tough clay soil and not a lot of bed space for me, I'm excited to try the Kuroda.
One of the best youtube videos I have seen thank you
Love 🥕 especially when I have them in my own garden 🪴 thanks for the help 👍
in michigan 5b cant wait to get started!
Great video. I love your company .
Thank you 😊💞
Nice! Very informative and well said, keep up the good work 💚
thank you very much! i have hard, clay soil. the tips have helped greatly!!!!
Excellent as always! Thankyou! Love carrots, your seed selection is fantastic. I grow some in deep containers too. Keep well watered, and I catch my retriever helping himself to them sometimes, lol the carrot gormand.lol. God bless
Hey!! Cool nice variety...I wanna get the purple ones & others ..taste different I am sure...Great job Thank you!!
Getting them to germinate seems to be my problem, but once they do we get great carrots.
Also when they fork can be good, the kids love when they look weird lol
Yes, place a board on top of the seed until they germinate, then remove. It keeps the seeds damp so they dont dry out.
That was my next attempt at them.
@Democrats Are just nazis didn't have boards, but I had a ton of boxes, so cut one of those up. Near 100% germination a week later, never had so many. Even got snail eggs for the kids to raise up, because kids lol
I planted a couple rows of uzbek golden in raised rows. I put them in beginning of march, then we got hit with a good week or 2 of non-stop rain and cold. I would say about 60% of them germinated. Which is fine, because i just filled in the gaps yesterday. Should have two nice harvest events.
Excellent Video. I only grow one variety, Red Cored Chantenay.
Great video! Thanks for the tips. Is there anything you can till in to heavier soil to help carrots grow? And if not sure of the nutritional value is there anything you'd recommend adding to the soil to keep the carrots happy? Thank you in advance!
Working in organic material like compost and gypsum can help break up heavier soils. Also, earthworms can help to loosen compacted soils.
Thx
Which variety of carrots were recommended in the video for packed soil? Those were the short and/or rounded ones.
I thought you said soil piggy’s lol so now that is what I’m going to remember carrots soil piggies 🐷 aka good soil!
I haven't seen Shannie lately in bakercreeks videos. Probably busy being a mom lol
Bless you ☆☆☆ carrots are the best surprises! And potatoes! What is the name of that tool that cracks the ground for carrots?!??!
A garden fork works pretty well for harvesting root crops.
@@RareSeedsBC yesss a broad fork that's what its called!!! Had to google it haha now I'm down a rabbit hole of garden fork vs broad fork lol ♡ light fun little argument unlike politics amen
If I'm going to make a raised bed or use containers what mix of soil should I use for carrots?
You can add organic material like compost or gypsum to the garden soil to keep it from becoming compacted.
I sometimes get hairy carrots, what kind of organic fertilizers I can use tho prevent it?
Yes! I met all the soil/compost requirements last year & all of my carrots were just short, stubby, hairy little things. For this reason I wanted to fertilize, but was nervous to add anything (organic or otherwise) as I didn't want to eat chemicals or alter the flavors.
Potassium rich fertilizers such as potash could help.
How did they taste after pulling?
You are every man’s dream woman.
Please help me sow my seeds Shannie.
I have tried to grow carrots several times n did work out . I planted some late fall last year and there tiny greens growing in my garden now im in pa . Will they grow and be able to be eaten this year or just produce seed ? Thank you so much !
They will kick off in spring!
They'll continue to grow. You'll likely want to harvest before the heat of summer sets in. If you miss your window and the roots have gotten a bit woody, then let them go a bit longer to harvest the seeds.
@@RareSeedsBC ok thank you so much hope it goes well !!!
@@thedorkasaur great !! Hope they do well !! Thanks 😊
I was concerned about my ability to grow carrots, but I did buy the oxhearts. So I guess I'm good. Lol
Whack some shade cloth on top after you've planted the carrots, this will stop the bed from drying out.
I grow Danvers half long and Scarlet Nantes and they germinate just fine and grow in a 12” raised bed, but the carrots never get very large. They’re so small they’re hardly worth keeping. I add a couple inches of compost, but is there something more I can do to produce bigger carrots?
If you have fluffy, potassium rich soil, you could take a look at the other factors like possible overcrowding, the weather may be too hot (Scarlet Nantes really thrive in cool weather,) or they may even need a bit more water.
Great video. Where's this garden? Looks like south florida.
Do you sell seeds to Canada?
Thanks for your time
Much love xoxox
We do! We offer free shipping to our Canadian neighbors as well!
@@RareSeedsBC thanks very much xoxox thanks for helping shed wars with some seeds we appreciate that
Much love xoxox
Can you still eat them after they have flowered?
They are not tasty after they flower as the roots become quite woody.
Do you ever get a white surface mold in your carrot bed? It's very humid here (Florida) and it spreads rapidly when the soil is wet. It kills the greenery on the top of the carrot. How do I get rid of it? Neem or peroxide doesn't work. HELP. It's killing my carrots. Thanks.
I had this same issue last year. I live in Western Oregon - zone 8b & have never experienced this before. Your right, Neem wouldn't take care or it. So yes, I too would love to hear what they would suggest.
I'd look into solarizing the soil to help kill some of the mold spores in your beds. Then before planting again, ensure there's adequate drainage. Try watering in the morning so that the sun can dry the surface of the soil during the day.
@@RareSeedsBC Thanks. That's for the future, I really need something for the problem I have now. If you can think of anything please share. I'm going to try the cinnamon. It surely can't hurt. I've already lost 1/3 of my bed of carrots
Greetings,
Where are you with those Palm trees?
Cheers 🍷
Can I get some of these speeds
Do you mean seeds? Yes, go to Baker Seeds website. They are all there plus many more.
I'm growing oxheart this year in a no dig bed over heavy clay. I've been growing other carrots in 12" pots with success, but I think strong root crops will make my beds better.
Big diakon radishes will help break up hard soil too. They grow quite deep. The farmers around here use them as a late crop to break up dead pan In fields and as they are not winter hardy they rot and add great biological compost to the fields too.
What about containers
You can definitely grow carrots in containers! Just be sure they're deep enough for the variety of carrot you choose.
I have ordered from you two varieties of pelleted carrot seeds to hopefully eliminate most thinning and make spacing more precise. A good technique to keep carrot seeds from drying out too quickly is to cover with light remay after sowing and water it once a day or so. Works for parsnips also.
Can you regrow carrots using the carrot top and a partial top of the carrot?
No. You'll get a little bit of green top growth but the carrot root itself will not regrow. The tops are good for soups and stews
No, but I wonder if you can just do it for "free" seeds!
@@bananaboat805 In order to get carrot seeds, you have to leave the entire carrot, which is technically the plant root in the ground to overwinter. Do not trim the top at all and do not pull the carrot up. In the spring that carrot will send up a huge amount of green growth and eventually several clusters of flowers which will eventually dry and produce seeds. The top growth associated with seeds is big. Mine will get close to 3 ft tall and get very scraggly and cast a shadow a couple feet in each direction. That's something that has to be considered when choosing to leave a carrot in the ground for seed saving. The cost is valuable garden space the following year. It takes about four months for the seeds to be ready so be prepared to not plant anything requiring sun in that spot the following spring. You can take advantage of the shade it casts to plant some lettuce or perhaps beets or radishes in the shadow of the carrot growth. If you just plant the top cut off a carrot, there is not enough root for the energy needed to produce a seed head and it also doesn't allow the overwintering process that triggers the biennial action of producing seeds in the second year
@@lisal8529 Gotcha! I wouldn't because I don't have the patience to wait for any plant's seeds to be harvestable. Just curious :) . Thanks for the info!
...and YES! Don't waste garden space!

Clay soil is the worst!
Plant your carrot thick and do not then.
