  • Carrots are finicky about a few things: soil, water and temperature, but Baker Creek's Shannie McCabe has some solid advice about how to grow rock-star roots in your garden.

    I have my kiddos "make" carrot seed tape with toilet paper every winter to plant super early in the spring. They space them ~2" apart and use a watered down Elmer's glue to attach and seal the paper when folding the TP in half. NO THINNING!!! SO so worth the time to make it and the roll or two of TP.

      Oh my goodness! Thank you for this idea. I am just beginning a garden for the first time and I don't know if I can even tell the difference between a carrot sprout or a weed. So, this will be the perfect answer for me. I'll plant using really thin TP strips with seeds and not have to winnow anything out. 🥰🥰🥰

    • @lisal8529
      @lisal8529 3 роки тому +1

      @@bananaboat805 In order to get carrot seeds, you have to leave the entire carrot, which is technically the plant root in the ground to overwinter. Do not trim the top at all and do not pull the carrot up. In the spring that carrot will send up a huge amount of green growth and eventually several clusters of flowers which will eventually dry and produce seeds. The top growth associated with seeds is big. Mine will get close to 3 ft tall and get very scraggly and cast a shadow a couple feet in each direction. That's something that has to be considered when choosing to leave a carrot in the ground for seed saving. The cost is valuable garden space the following year. It takes about four months for the seeds to be ready so be prepared to not plant anything requiring sun in that spot the following spring. You can take advantage of the shade it casts to plant some lettuce or perhaps beets or radishes in the shadow of the carrot growth. If you just plant the top cut off a carrot, there is not enough root for the energy needed to produce a seed head and it also doesn't allow the overwintering process that triggers the biennial action of producing seeds in the second year
