I like your step by step walk-thrus, with basic repair tips (like the amp test wiring to dummy load/analyzer/scope).

Ray - Love your work and please don't take this as criticism, you're the best audio tech on UA-cam right now, but I would suggest opening the unit and doing a visual inspection before powering up, dim bulb notwithstanding. You never know what you'll find inside! 40 years in audio, seen some stuff!

    • @raygianelli3612

Mark, you are correct. It's advisable to open a unit for a visual inspection before powering it up. I do it with units that are of unknown provenance, but tend to not bother when someone unplugs a unit at their house and brings it to me. I probably should.
Thank you for bringing this valuable point up! ALL criticism is welcome; I'm human and therefore make errors. By correcting me we all learn. And that is truly the whole point of this channel.

@@mdzacharias Mark, I checked out some of your videos and came away impressed. You really know your stuff! You should really make more, but I understand if you don't. It is time consuming. And having to work around a camera can be awkward.

Bill, when I was a young man and mentioned an interest in electronics to older guys they gave me books, parts, tools and other items. I didn't understand why they did that until I got older. Now I do, and it's why I do this. Thanks for posting!

Well done, I'm saving money to buy, for starters, 2 RXLG resistors from 8R and 1000w each, and with a 2:1 pcb, to use these with a scope. But they aren't cheap, plus the aluminum block to give extra cooling to these giants. I've used for a time 2 dummy loads from 300w to 50R, normally used to measure FM transmitters. But it's difficult to get the right data out of these. And in the future, same setup with 4R resistors. But that would be much later. There are a few things I need for my bench, like a few lab power supplies and a few multimeters. Maybe I design them myself, but it depends on the costs, in these days you can have power supply's for cheap prizes. What about the fuses, maybe they were beyond their lifetime, it's a component like any others. Because they didn't blow right away, but slowly.

Thanks for taking the time to make these videos, they are very informative. Never though about inspecting a fuse other than to see if it is blown. I have recapped a couple of amps with the help of AK forums but sill have almost no idea at problem solving, your videos offer a chance for me to learn a little more. One day I may even get the courage to take that faulty AU-919 out of the cupboard and try to bring it back to life.

Alex, I highly recommend that you hone your skills on something with little value before you tackle that 919. I leaned on old CRT TV's when I started out. My first patients didn't fare so well. There's a reason surgeons practice on cadavers!

@@raygianelli3612 I have recapped an AU-555a, 2x AU-517, and an AU-717. I 100% agree with you I am not ready to tackle the AU-919 yet, it is going to be much more complicated. One day…………………

@@Alex-yl5jt Main thing with those guys is the black poly (AKA black flag) capacitors going south. When they do, and it's when, not if. is that due to the extremely high bandwidth of these amps they can oscillate and destroy the NLA output transistors. An ounce of prevention and all that. And the filter capacitors are these weird oval guys that are also NLA. Some guys gut them and stick regular caps in them.

I did find it very odd with a blown channel and comes out of protection, your RCA cables look a little on the economy side. I like the blown fuse with wires solder trick.

b&k has some models that you measure idle current through the fuse holder....i like the fuse idea, i just removed a couple fried fuse bulbs from an old kenwood. i think i will make up a couple cables with them. thanks for the video ray.

Thanks Joseph. I picked up the idea of using blown fuses from an audio forum I belong to. I just took it one step further and put banana jacks on the ends to make them a permanent fixture. At least it gave me something to do with the blown fuses littering my bench!

Thank you for the video, I'm the original owner of a 9090 from 1976. My left side channel went out 20 years ago and she's been sitting on the shelf ever since. I'll look at the fuses sometime in the near future and maybe that's my issue, I had it repaired once before back in the '80's for the same thing and they may have just replaced the fuses. I did have a tendency to leave long bare wires leading into the machine, so maybe they crossed and blew the fuse. I'll keep you updated :) Any idea what the fuse size is and where they can be purchased?

    • @raygianelli3612
      @raygianelli3612  2 роки тому

There are 2 amp and 7 amp fuses in your 9090. Probably the easiest place to get them would be Amazon. Don't use slow blow fuses.

Great Video. It is crazy how stuff like your test equipment malfunctioning goes bad when you need it. It has happened to all of us. Ray, do you have any preference on vintage receivers? I have always been a Marantz guy, mostly because my father had a 2275 as our home stereo and I grew up with it. Any general thoughts on Pioneer, Sansui, Kenwood, and Yamaha from the seventies? Thanks!

They're different flavors, but as I see more Sansui gear I'm becoming enamored of their sound. Maybe subjective, but they seem to retain definition as the volume is raised. Maybe it's just me. :)
