Nice and inventive film. Gives me a view of the pier I've never seen before, unless you cout peering over the railing on a calm day.

It would be cool to see the remnants of the old Redondo Pier, it used to twice as large as it is now, until the storms destroyed it, The Edge and Cattlemen's Resturants are down there somewhere, along with a couple of trinkets shops. Crabs gotta eat too, great video......

Wasnt it a fire that brought that pier down? I really don't know the history of the pier but my grandfather told me about when he was younger the pier was all wooden and a huge fire had started and burnt most of it away. Or was it a combination of the fire and storms? I like that Redondo has so much history.

Several fires and several storms. I've seen two fires, the Cattleman's one and an earlier, smaller one. I once saw a badly piloted sailboat crash into the pier on the harbor entrance side. Luckily nobody drowned. In the 1980's severe storms badly damaged the pier and the harbor. Boulders crashed into the Blue Moon Saloon near the salt water pool and large waves were crashing over the breakwater. My parents and grandparents told me of storms that crashed over the pier and flooded the street that used to run immediately along the coast. I remember seeing rust and water stains that were probably five feet high on the metal street light piles along it.
My first memories of the Pier must be from around 1961 when I was four or five. The pier at that time was just a straight pier out, like Hermosa or Manhattan, but made of wood. I believe the Original Tony's was there. Where the back of the parking structure is was the Fox theater, a grand old movie palace I saw many films in before they tore it down. There was a street running parallel to the water, also wher the parking structure is and the pier began at it. I remember on the front left where there steps down to where the music club was are, threre was an original version of the Sizzler steak chain. Used to be much better at that time. Sawdust was on the floor, the steaks came hot on metal plates and a large baked potato was included. First steak I ever ate was as a small child there. The steaks were larger than they are now. At one time I thought this was because I was little at the time, but people who were adults then have confrmed the shrinkage of portions. The short pier farther north wher you can buy fishing supplies was there. Where the pier walkway splits, the left section where every body fishes was there in 1961. On the right where the shops are the pier only ran a short distance and terminated. The first big change in my lifetime was to turn a straight pier into a horseshoe shaped one, which ended, as it now does, at the small boat harbor where the fishing charters dock and the fresh fish market is. The market before this was accessed from the street.
The pier already had a long history at that time, with several rebuilds. I'm pretty sure my Dad and Mom had both been on it as small kids and they were both born in LA in the mid 1920's. Redondo goes back to the 1890's when my greatgrandparents came to California. Natives probably know Veterans Park was originally the site of a hrand hotel built by Henry Huntington, railroad magnate and founder of the street car that led to his creation of Redondo as the terminus of the line. All of this, and more can be found in the several bookd of local history that can probably bought in a shop somewhere on the Pier.

@@brianmccarthy5557 Cool stories, now the Pier is being "Re-imagened" by the Redondo Beach City Councel, they just paid out $9 million dollars, to the "Fun Factory" owners leases buy-out, now it's gone, talk is they want to turn into more of a "Newport Beach" vibe, some current business owners at the pier thinks there is a lot corruption going on, Olde Tony's can not get a decent lease, they are there on a month to month basis now, we have see what transpires....
