I love this. It's like two younger brothers asking their older brother what really happened in the house as they were all growing up.
Very apt.
Great Viewpoint
"Stuart Smalley" has ALWAYS been my favourite SNL character/skit. I've even got the DVD movie. Love you, Al Franken!! Great interview!
What a great interview. Didn't want it to end. The guys showed their natural respect for Al Franken and it was mutual.
It's fun to hear about how SNL is produced.
He needs to be Senator Franken again. He was brilliant
This one was one of my faves--love listening to Al Franken no matter the format. And he and David Spade have two of the best, infectious laughs ever. 😹
My fav of the series. And that’s saying something because this podcast is fantastic. Thank you David and Dana.🙏🏻
I love hearing about the behind the scenes activities of the magic that I watched on snl over the years
Just found this show. Love, love, love. I want more. David and Dana are an awesome pair. Thank you for being you.
The writers are by far the best guests!
Al Franken and Tom Davis used to hang out in my hometown when I was a kid.. I met them maybe 1978, 1979
Franken and Davis were two of the best ever on SNL
My favorite joke by Al and Tom was, “did you hear about the Rabbi that did circumcisions for free… he only took tips.”😂
Al Franken was truly one of best ever. Still is. Great guy. ❤
Love hearing the smorgasbord of SNL stories, the inside scoop and a peek into the minds of these characters.
Thanks so much
Any time I ever mentioned the old “ he only took tips” sketch with Davis, no one remembers… I’m thrilled that Al talked about it here. The weekend update segment where he described President Reagan’s prostate cleansing was comedy gold.!!! It makes you laugh and grab your crotch in agony at the same time!!! I love Al Franken
I forgot how great Al Frankens voice is.
This show with Al Franken was my favorite podcast , everyone was so funny KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK ~!
As someone who is passionate about politics, music, and comedy, Franken is up there as one of the greatest writers, and a huge influence on me.
...and very rapey.
After all it was The Al Franken Decade and most SNL viewers had just one thought, how can they help Al Franken?
Thank you all for all the laughs. So glad for your podcast
Having seen every one of the shows that you talked about on this show... it just reminds me how legendary All three of you are. You created the fabric of understanding for the events we were living through. Thank you!
Hey fellas keep em coming
Dana more Dennis M. and McCartney impressions pls and thnk u
Spade and Carvey LEGENDS
I loved Franken’s “Mobile Uplink Unit” skits where he wore the satellite dish on his head. Those were insane.
Awesome Podcast and interview- Love the story telling and history of SNL- Al Franken is one of my favorite guests.
That was a great interview, Thank you. I cried from laughing
Guys, thanks. I turned 18, four months before SNL started, I've been watching ever since, even during the odd time. 😁😉. Started watching with my then 40 something mom . She's gone now and I've raised my now 20 somethings daughters on SNL. Yeah, love you guys, the show, comedy and Al. 💖
Oh, and guys? Just downloaded the cast, I'll be enjoying catching up!
Never listened to a podcast religiously like I do "Fly on the wall" You guys remind me of when radio was actual radio & not all this "anybody can be a digital D.J." nonsense..🙄 Dave & Dana just get it, top notch!👌
This was a great show!!! Such good memories of vintage SNL
Franken is a great comedic mind and a great statesman.
An you imagine how much fun it must be working with Al in politics or at the office.
Love you two, love Al! Thanks. ☺️
Speaking as part of the Al Franken Generation, this was nectar. Looking forward to being a fly on the wall for a Candice Bergen interview.
Great segment, Al Franken, AKA Senator Al Franken, legendary guest and of course how appropriate in regard to SNL lore.
How important was the Bush impression and writing? In the spring of 1992 my high school Academic Decathlon team did well enough at nationals that we were invited to DC. While there, our team and several other teams from other regions went to the White House rose garden for a speech from President Bush. Most of the speech is forgettable drivel about how we were the future. At the end of the speech George Bush says "and don't forget, I'm Dana Carvey." does the hand gestures from Dana's impression then went back into the White House. One of the highlights of my life.
To hear Franken, the most influential guy on the show not named Lorne, rave about Dana like that just reaffirms that Dana Carvey's the GOAT SNL cast member. Much respect to Hartman, Farley, Gilda, Eddie Murphy... but Dana was the funniest and most talented performer of anybody that's ever been on that show.
Kate McKinnon Berthold Hands down.
Bill Hader has to be up there
thats senator franken to you jesters on the wall
He had to resign
loved this
Al got F'd by his own party... Smart man. We need this cat around to "bury" some of the dingbats on the other side. He did such a great job with Rush Limbaugh and guys like that. Bill O'Reilly.
And by other side you mean...???
The nazi GQP. Apparently, your side.
@@BrunetteOnTheCouch I hope you're not planning on being an attorney... Not good with discernment or analytical thinking. I'm sure they appreciate you in Shitstain, Iowa. You're probably the smartest one there. I hope you're good looking too.
Have been waiting for this. After all the references to Franken in other episodes, this should be fun.
I love Al. 💙💙
This was a good one. You know.... for a change. 😁
Parabolic dish on the head perfect.
the best one yet'
💜 Al Franken, Stewart
Bravo, Al Franken!
love Al
I just watched the "Sincere Stu" sketch with Joe Montana after hearing Franken talk about it. I'm old, been watching SNL since the first season, so I remember seeing it when it first aired. It really is a funny sketch, and Montana's lack of experience really does come across as sincerity with this character. Perfect meeting of writing and casting
Also, I have never once said "SNL hasn't been funny since (insert favorite cast members here) left the show." Whenever I see someone trot out that cliche, what I really see is "SNL hasn't been funny since I was young and still had a sense of humor." There are current and recent cast members who are as funny and talented as anyone who has ever done the show. Kate mckinnon, Bill hader, Cecily strong, kenan Thompson, etc, are all brilliant, and some of the writing that Michael Che and Colin jost are doing is as funny as anything ever written by Jim downey, Al franken, Tina Fey, and many other great writers.
@@christheghostwriter - I agree re “funny” - but I will say this - it was more interesting in early years. I will stand by that. Ethos was more revolutionary and they would do a conceptual sketch that said something vs catch-phrase-whoring
@@maddymud thanks for proving my point.
@@christheghostwriter - noooo. It’s just as dumb to say that older things (blanket statement) were better, as well as saying (blanket statement) they are exactly the same. Nuance in all things my man
@@maddymud you literally made a blanket statement that the show was "more interesting in early years." Not only are you wrong, you're guilty of the very thing you say you're complaining about. Note that I never said anything about anything being exactly the same. All I said was that the argument that the show used to be funny and is no longer funny is made by one generation of people after another, and it's incorrect every time. Saturday night live is still funny. Go argue with someone who's as dumb as you are and leave me alone
Was surprised how positive david was towards al. Its no secret dave does not like al. I was expecting a totally different and more subdued david. Just shows how david can put personal feelings aside to make a guest shine on the show
I thought this was an excellent episode, really enjoyed hearing from Al, funny guy.
His Stewart Smalley products were gold.
Remember when Al Franken was the best senator??? Also..... Remember when... One of my favorite Farley skits!!
Was he?
Time for Al to come back to senate, I mean cmon, if Hershel W gets a shot, I mean CMON!
Word
He's too smart for this "new" generation of politicians
the rapist...lol...
@@jofi4580 he left office like 4 years ago lol he’ll be fine.
I agree, plus he was an excellent senator. He was on the left, but he was not extreme plus he was also intelligent, productive and reasonable. That’s exactly what this country needs.
Al is one of your guests who could do another hour..
Blue Thunder dvds were on netflix's dvd by mail service. Ironically delicious! JAFFO RULES!
I have been doing stand up for 20 years with out mch in the way of breaks L know I need more than breaks like good material but I have been told I have a good delivery. Thnks
This question is for Me. Spade
How do you keep you confidence to perform? I come at this from a visual arts perspective. Out of the gate, I had a show that was reviewed as a potential young artist. It scared the shit out of me. I felt like a cockroach with lights just turned in. I didn’t like it. I felt like a fraud. After I went into a depression. Uninspired, the ideas dried up and I was scared it wouldn’t come back. This went on for 7yrs. I’m working on getting my confidence level up. I’ve since woke up and have some fight and I just don’t give a fuck anymore. The ideas are flowing and my sense of humor came back but I know my perspective can turn on dime.which is added stress.
You all seem to lead a simulare lifestyle. Have you ever been accused of having a mental illness?
I think Dana would have been great in the Gap skits. He could have been a wild Gap girl, with rockstar hair and slightly burnt out.
Actually that Rosie Schuster joke about the Worst Hanukkah Gift for Anne Frank is just what Jewish Concentration Camp prisoners or survivors would be telling each other.
He should never have resigned. I get why he did...to show that Dems have more moral views than the Reps...and I love that about him...but it robbed us of a significant member of the political system.
The National Comedy Center in Jamestown is great.
Frankenstein sweet!
47:26 😂
That George Harrison anecdote is not only a good story about George, but also a good show biz story. I’ve never heard it before. It’s at 30:52 - 33:23.
Can any of you speak about Buck Henry?
I was an early fan of Get Smart only to learn at much later age that MelBrooks and Buck Henry were the writers
I was young when the first season if SNL hit. I’ve been a fan since
❤❤❤❤
"Al Franken Caught Rolling Around On Floor With Chris Farley"
Hey, I like you all and doggone it, you all are worth it 😉💫💫💫
Dana Carvey‘s Jimmy Stewart sounds exactly like James Cameron.✌️😘
Dana, SF State also was the setting for an Acid Test, via Kesey and the Merry Pranksters. Maybe Stienbrenner knew this🎉
Ps love you two's pod. Tis Great and Hilariously touching moments and funny to boot 🥾
Great work so interesting.
Peyton Manning's just an all-round genius.
"*chanting* : "Squids got genes squids got genes squids got genes" -Spongebob squarepants and Patrick star
I so wanted to hear about "Planet of the Enormous Hooters."
PAUL TSONGAS?!?!?! I was 11 years old in '92, and I remember that goofy ass voice to this day
"She's chopHa!"
I thought they would grill him a bit, Al got roughed up a bit on some of these podcasts - I was excited for them to address that
I wish Al and Downey would have a CNN show
I liked when Al would do on scene reporting on SNL News with a satellite strapped to his head.
I only did enough cocaine to stay up so I could make sure Belushi didn't do too much 😂
Algebra 2 and he’s a math whiz? 😂
Great episode. Franken was super funny and interesting. I kind of wished he would’ve harassed Dana and David about all the smack talking they do about him.
Lester Bangs The Delinquents
Jook Savages on the Brazos
I just want to be a movie star
Dana , did you know you’re part of the Paul is dead conspiracy . I saw this thing on yt and there’s a clip of you talkin about meeting paul and it’s edited to make it seem like you call Paul , Billy ( Paul’s replacement = billy sheers )
11:40 they really can't help it can they?
I like thinking of comedy as emotional slapstick
Interesting. I feel you, Cheryl.
1:02:00
How come no one talks about Mr. Bill!?
Talk to Mr. Bill, Toonces, Victoria Jackson and Gilbert Gottfried's ghost.
What's a "lox"?
What about " Me, Al Franken "
Al talks about laughing at 3:30 in the morning. Eric Idle lost interest in doing SNL because of the way it was written and said, "At 3 o'clock in the morning everything is funny."
People today just doesn't get comedy. I heard that they find jokes on Friends offensive 😂
OJ did well too.
This podcast is KPCS with even less production and hats.
Andrew Dice Clay already.
Probably could have been a two parter. Dana should have interrupted Al with yelling Biden more. “Come on! Out with it. I’m not joking here. Geez”
Al, we need you back in politics🙏🏼
How does it affect me. Al Franken.
...hey wait, this is kinda weird..a gormet SNL Cheese Platter?
I am surprised the Feminists haven't rehabilitated Franken because of his accomplishments and Senate contribution. After 4 years of Trump as President what Franken got attacked for was grade school stuff.
Idk if we need Dana's Biden impression every single episode. I mean, every single episode
