You are correct on the smokers, I used the cheap one to start with but when you set it on the ground it burns the ground, I have round burn marks all around my hives. I did break down and buy a good one and what a difference.
I know this is an older video, but u are one good guy pulling over for the puppies..awwww thank god you found them and not some butthole that was going to hurt them..and taking time out of ur day to help them,,bless you!
This is my first time sharing. I have watched all your videos and learned a lot. I have one of the smaller smokers and I spend much more time trying to keep it lit than I do bee keeping. I searched the internet for a smoker like your (less the diesel fuel sticker) and no one seems to carry them any more like that. The things I looked for were the pin hinged lid and the wire on the bottom. I did find one that looked like it but it was $60.00 at a place called Ruhl Bee Supply. I love watching the cut out videos!!!!
Well, I got a "good" (decent) smoker from Kelley and the 3rd time I used it the spring loop pulled loose from one side of the top. It worked OK but I felt I had to fidget with it a lot to keep it going. I stumbled on this video and made my mind up. I ordered "Old Granpappy" from Dadant. Same model you've got, finger guard, etc. Fired it up this afternoon, (of course I did, it got here like 10 minutes ago! LOL) to cook it out and make sure all was good before I needed it. Looked like someone was burning a huge pile of leaves in just a few minutes of pumping that thing! The difference is amazing. Thank you for the good advice! Now I've just got to find me a "DIESEL FUEL ONLY" sticker! Thanks Again for the advice and all the videos! Keep up the good work!
I love your videos. Very helpful and your style, as we say here in Boston, is ah-some. Glad you picked up the dogs and found a home for them. Take care.
My co-workers tell me I blow smoke all the time: but I still bought a smoker. My next purchase will be wiser. Thanks for the video. And thanks for the good deed with the dogs. and that ain't smoke....
Thanks for the advice on smokers. Wish I had more pine trees for the smoker. It stinks that some people think dogs are disposable. I hope you find them good homes.
Hey I really like your channel and I have learned a lot from you! I have one little "tip" I could add...I have a smoker like your Dadant with the ring style lid handle. I still have the cork it came with when I bought it. I use the cork to snuff it out when I am done. I find that the ring is a perfect place to stick the cork while I'm using it. Maybe that's why I haven't lost it yet! Maybe it was designed like that on purpose? Again- great videos! Keep 'em coming.
I bought the cheaper 10 inch tall smoker(EBay special) cause money is tight... so we will see how long it lasts. There is a definite difference in the quality of the materials and construction. Glad to see the pups all ended up in new homes. Take care
My last order from Mann Lake was damaged in shipping... All it took was a 30 second phone call and I had replacements at my door step two days later. AWESOME customer service. Hey, I'm looking for a dog...they are awful cute.
You sold me, ya get what ya pay for, pretty much true in everything. I'll get the bigger one for sure. You're a good man Charlie Brown, Dirt Rooster, for picking up those pups, a man after my own heart.
Wow the end of the video made my day :) nici job rescuing those two puppys sir 👏 And thanks for reviewing tbose smoker. I got the cheap ebay one but i will try it for first time in one week when i get my first 6 nucleus :) cant waith
I got the cheaper one and yes it is hard to keep going for any length of time. That little handle will slice your finger too (it's in one of my videos) and gets hot really quick. I like the other one and am going to get one :) Thanks!
Its nice you saved those puppies, most people now just drive by abandoned puppies. If you passed by my place I would have taken them both. (Its a long drive to France mind!)
***** The first one was the best looking of course. He went pretty quick. I didn't get rid of the last one until ten that night. I was almost to the point of walking up to someone and saying hold him for a second and then running away. lol
That so sad that some1 would do that but you are one hell of an awesome human being for stopping and grabbin them dogs up!!! Them poor things prob woulda got swallowed up by the wilderness 😢
Before I got my bees, I lashed out and bought a brand new smoker. I think it was about $55. Then a couple of weeks later, I bought two off a retired beek for $50. I also got his old, galvanised two frame extractor for $60. And last year, my sister's father in law gave me a smoker that a friend of his had left with him before moving to Thailand 10 years ago. So yeah...Now I have four smokers and I still haven't used the one I paid $55 for.
He's right about Dadant. They have much better quality products. Cost a bit more of course. And they will not let you know if what you ordered is backordered. Dadant is geared for commercial beekeepers. I bought a cheapy from Ebay also. Good information here. Go for the more expensive smoker. It's worth it. Thanks 628DirtRooster.
LOL I fell ya when it comes to bee supply's arriving, Christmas every time! I just hope the wife is out when the FedEx truck comes. She says I'm addicted to Bees..
I know how it is with Dadant, I ordered a beginner bee kit. It took about a month to get everything because I called to check on my order because I never got a confirmation email. when I called their main office in Illinois they said I need to call the branch in California. then they said it was back ordered and was sent back to Illinois to complete my order. The kit was good but there service on getting it to you, not so much, and god job saving those dogs. I would of taken the one eating you smoker fuel but I don't think you would drive to California to drop it off. lol.
OK... Let's get ready for the first ever 628DirtRooster name the dawg contest. I'm betting the two made it to your (their) home. My entry: Dee-o-gee and Smoker
Rich Booth Ha! How about Schopenhauer? I never worked so hard to get rid of anything free in my life. With the responses I was getting you would have thought I was selling aluminum siding. Giving puppies away as a tough business.
628DirtRooster There is an old saying about a free puppy. It ends up costing you a fortune in food, vet bills, and other miscellaneous "stuff". Not that I endorse what the prior owner did, but you see why for some it's an option. If you could find that person and throw him out in the woods you'd be making progress. Maybe you could teach them to sniff out bees. That would be awesome. Problem is, it would be tough for them to climb a ladder. They're cute, they'll get adopted.
Hey dirtrooster, having trouble with robbing bees the bees must be ferel bees some are solid black some are very dark striped bodies they are in the hives having there way tried blocking entrances reducing moved the hives any suggestions ? HELP...
Jay Buzz Use internal or entrance feeders. No feeders outside the hive. You can try placing a robber screen on the front of your box or you can completely close the hive for a day and see if that works. The robber screen doesn't have to be fancy. Get the box strong and the robbing will stop.
my dad used to find random dogs dumped near his long drive way when he lived in Missouri. seemed every time we went to visit he had a new dog. I just don't understand people who do that to their pets. we gave a dog away once because we had too many. less than a month later they ditched her somewhere down the road from our farm and she ended up running back home to us.
Not to say anything about your sales skills, but I think if you came to my door, you'd have better success peddling a swarm of bees to me than a puppy ! Lol.... Damn shame that some people would abandon their animals. I was brought up understanding that if you took on the ownership of animals, then you had to follow through with the responsibility of feeding and maintaining those animals. In many cases like farms, it means being at home every day at certain times of day to feed them, or arranging for someone trustworthy to be there to do it. It's a full-time commitment, owning animals.
You making fun of my smoker ha ha ha ha! It does go out rather quickly but I thought it was just because I didn't know how to light and stuff it to keep it going. When is that video coming?
628DirtRooster Kinda figured that you were trying to get rid of them before you got home. Guessin your wife would have hit you with a cast iron skillet. heehee
The biggest and Stainless steel Smokers! Like Randy said, burns longer, and rust free! The tin smokers the bottoms rots from heat. EVERY THING STAINLESS STEEL! Even the hive tool, try to get 11 or 12" stainless steel hive tool ! Cause it cleans off better than steel, and too no RUST! IT's EASIER TO SPOT ON THE GROUND ECT.
I have a smoker for when I have to work with a mean hive but I just don't like to use it. I prefer a spray bottle with sugar water. It's less of threat to the bees. and they would groom themselves and if there were mite they should knock them off just as if I dusted the hive.
You are a good man stopping and picking up those Puppies, my 17EEEE would love to meet the dirty rat B@$t@rd who dropped those little guys off on the side of the road. Does this mean you are going to have to change your catch phrase to Welcome to the 628DirtRooster channel where hobby bee keeping and stray Puppy adoptions is a way of life
Those pups will be best friends and loyal companions to their new owners. Nice save.
You got my respect for doing the dogs right.
John Mills Couldn't leave them to starve. The one by the road would have surely gotten hit. I would have brought them home but we already have five.
This type of video is so great to find! Thanks for taking the time to walk us newbies through this type of stuff.
You are correct on the smokers, I used the cheap one to start with but when you set it on the ground it burns the ground, I have round burn marks all around my hives. I did break down and buy a good one and what a difference.
+Larry Pollard Looks like little UFO landing sites all over your yard. lol
Awesome that you saved those pups its awful what people do to animals especially puppy's and kittens.
What a beauty it is!
Thank you! I got this smoker in today and didn't know what the extra pieces were for. ( bellow clip and inside bottom airspace plate)
I know this is an older video, but u are one good guy pulling over for the puppies..awwww thank god you found them and not some butthole that was going to hurt them..and taking time out of ur day to help them,,bless you!
I knew you had a deep and tender heart...God bless you

Here you go.
Great side by side comparison, definitely worth the extra money. Your good deed for the day with the pups.
+DixieGirl9876 Had to do it.
Good video, glad to see you rescued the pups I'am a dog lover to. Cheers
MrSageflyfisher I'm glad I happened upon them before it was too late.

+Chris English LOL They are worth the extra few dollars for the durability, size and function. I got my sticker at Tractor Supply.
I'd look for a "Jet Fuel Only" sticker for your next big smoker.
I love your videos. Very helpful and your style, as we say here in Boston, is ah-some. Glad you picked up the dogs and found a home for them. Take care.
Bostonclassics1 I can hear your accent as I read this. lol Thanks for watching.
My co-workers tell me I blow smoke all the time: but I still bought a smoker. My next purchase will be wiser. Thanks for the video. And thanks for the good deed with the dogs. and that ain't smoke....
Sam Compton BK LOL Next time he accuses you of blowing smoke just tell him you're practicing your beekeeping skills.
You are a really good person
I'm a real angel. ;)
Thanks for the advice on smokers. Wish I had more pine trees for the smoker.
It stinks that some people think dogs are disposable. I hope you find them good homes.
Kylia Emery just think about this. if they dumped animals can you imagine what they do to their own kids?
Yep...kinda had parents like that...I cut people like that from my life. Doing great now!
+circlecitync I lost mine. I use a paper towel most of the time.
Great comparison review on the smokers!
Rob Farrow Thanks man. Maybe it'll be useful to you one day.
628DirtRooster If I ever get into bee keeping, I'll be way ahead due to your informative videos! Thanks!
I bought the cheaper 10 inch tall smoker(EBay special) cause money is tight... so we will see how long it lasts. There is a definite difference in the quality of the materials and construction.
Glad to see the pups all ended up in new homes.
Take care
Papa's Place As long as it doesn't blow cheap smoke... That's what we care about right?
My last order from Mann Lake was damaged in shipping... All it took was a 30 second phone call and I had replacements at my door step two days later. AWESOME customer service. Hey, I'm looking for a dog...they are awful cute.
yourbeekeeper I like Mann Lake too. Too late on the dogs. Man it is hard to give dogs away in parking lots.
You sold me, ya get what ya pay for, pretty much true in everything. I'll get the bigger one for sure.
You're a good man Charlie Brown, Dirt Rooster, for picking up those pups, a man after my own heart.
You will definitely get your money's worth on the big one from Dadant.
I smoke pipes. I know, how passé. When you said you had a new smoker I was so excited. Then reality set in.
LOL
Hey rooster what do you think of these top bar hives
Wow the end of the video made my day :) nici job rescuing those two puppys sir 👏
And thanks for reviewing tbose smoker. I got the cheap ebay one but i will try it for first time in one week when i get my first 6 nucleus :) cant waith

ArtisanTony It's always nice to have a backup even if it is the small one.
You are indeed a scholar and a gentleman. Why do people get dawgs if they don’t even take the time to find them a home?
Its nice you saved those puppies, most people now just drive by abandoned puppies. If you passed by my place I would have taken them both. (Its a long drive to France mind!)
+Les Agathes France? Those puppies only understood English. lol
+628DirtRooster They would have done fine by me, I'm English! Nice pupps. I have 2 ugly Bullmastiffs.....
Les Agathes Got to spend a little time over there a while back. Loved it.
You're back!!! Yay!!!
Keara Loresch Ha! Been a busy few weeks around here. Thanks for the love.
Can it be used to vape? Somebody will ask:)
MyHollowpoint LOL, it might burn your lips.
Pretty dogs..Glad you picked them up!
You have the same smoker as me! :D
***** It's a good one. Gonna last you a looong time.
628DirtRooster mine is a lot cleaner though >_
***** Ha! Yeah, mine stays in the bed of my truck.
628DirtRooster I also take a wire brush and attach it to my cordless drill and use it to clean out the creosote from the inside.
***** I used to clean mine with oven cleaner.
Nice review. How about that heat shield and lack thereof? Looks like a significant difference.
+Canoe4fun344 For sure!
How are the dogs? Did you find a good home for them? Beautiful pups
Got them all to new owners. I hope they lived.
This video makes up for the goat video. Nice work!
***** Thanks man. What was the goat video?
628DirtRooster Really? I'll never forget the goat birthing video you spliced into the otherwise peaceful and interesting beekeeping video. :)
***** ROTFL I forgot about that.
628DirtRooster yeah that one was disturbing. Awe look bees... holy crap a baby goat!
Chris Bexley The trauma effect.
so sweet
you're so kind. You save Bees, and puppies. Why... I bet there's no animal you wouldn't rescue!!!
Thomas McCaffrey Ha! OK Golden child with your four puppy rescue today. Hats off to you.
thank for review I was going buy smoker Xmas for my father since getting in bee next spring. now want buy chea ebay one.
Jeremiah Oddo That will be a great Christmas gift.
Thanks for the review, now I won't bother with a cheap one. Hope you were able to get to find homes for all the pups. Take care
rchopp You get what you pay for with that cheap Ebay junk.
Before I got my bees, I lashed out and bought a brand new smoker. I think it was about $55. Then a couple of weeks later, I bought two off a retired beek for $50. I also got his old, galvanised two frame extractor for $60.

Pop's Shack Ha! I believe you are a collector. If you ever teach beekeeping classes you'll have smokers for all your students to borrow.
Puppy bomb!
If it weren't for their service or lack thereof, they'd be the best.
Yes. I agree.
LOL I fell ya when it comes to bee supply's arriving, Christmas every time! I just hope the wife is out when the FedEx truck comes. She says I'm addicted to Bees..
+Rick DeWitt Haha same here. The UPS and FedEx trucks are on our street more than the garbage truck.
Good video. Just wanted to put in a plug for Rossman Apiaries over here in Moultrie GA. they will take good care of you
John Horne I hadn't heard of them. Thanks John.
I thought you had used them, but they must have been mentioned in a video by some Cajun guy. :)
Nice
You're a good man :-)
***** Nah, I have my moments. :)
I know how it is with Dadant, I ordered a beginner bee kit. Unfortunately some of Dadant's products are unmatched by any other supplier. I've had more than one bad experience with their service.
OK... Let's get ready for the first ever 628DirtRooster name the dawg contest. I'm betting the two made it to your (their) home.

Puppy: Gaa gaa goo goo daddy. XD & too, everyone's taste in things such as smokers vary too, kept in mind, learned something new on smokers.
Enjoy and learn from your channel, thanks. Have you done a 'How I Light My Smoker' video or have a missed it? Thanks...
Jeff Attaway I haven't but it's coming.
Many are looking forward to it...
I use the smoke to keep Mosquito's, Flies, Nats away too~ beside give GR8 POWER HITS! he hee that the only use i know for the smaller ones

That's one of those boomerang pets.
Just got my cheap smoker today and I had to check it out to make sure that it is working, sure looks like the el cheapo you got.
It'll work it just puts out that low quality smoke. lol
Pack it with pine straw and you'll love it.
Thank you.
Get a good fire going in the bottom before you pack it and puff it as you pack it.
Try to make an electric smoker, I make them myself, very comfortable, greatly facilitate the work
Did the two males find homes?
Yep thankfully
I have the Dadant
Best one on the market.

Spiderclawz Where were you when I was finding homes for them? lol
You making fun of my smoker ha ha ha ha! It does go out rather quickly but I thought it was just because I didn't know how to light and stuff it to keep it going. When is that video coming?
Jason Adams I would never make fun of anyone's tiny little smoker. LOL
I know I am about 2 years late but I want a puppy and you had to show them. arrrggg. well I been lookin I will find one soon enough.
LOL They're all gone.
628DirtRooster Kinda figured that you were trying to get rid of them before you got home. Guessin your wife would have hit you with a cast iron skillet. heehee
What happen to the cute puppies?
Fabian Weber I found new owners at different stops along the way.
The biggest and Stainless steel Smokers! Like Randy said, burns longer, and rust free! The tin smokers the bottoms rots from heat. EVERY THING STAINLESS STEEL! Mont Royale Bee Ranch I'm a fire bug so I prefer the smoker. :)
LMAO! Just don't burn down the hive.
Alright then,..Thanks for that,..
Bobby Brown Sho nuf man!
you need to keep those dogs and train them to be a beekeepers helper
Jen And ED It took some doing but I got rid of them.
You get what you pay for.... How many smokers do you have by the way? Nice puppies yeah you're sure to find them a home they're labs

You are a good man stopping and picking up those Puppies, my 17EEEE would love to meet the dirty rat B@$t@rd who dropped those little guys off on the side of the road. Does this mean you are going to have to change your catch phrase to Welcome to the 628DirtRooster channel where hobby bee keeping and stray Puppy adoptions is a way of life
Only puppy wrangling when I have to. lol
